For a 4K YouTube livestream, the recommended encoder bitrate ranges from 30 Mbps to 50 Mbps, depending on frame rate and codec. That is the stream’s outgoing bitrate—not a guarantee that a connection or broadband plan with the same advertised upload speed will be reliable. If you’re watching a 4K live event, the relevant speed is download: Netflix recommends a stable 15 Mbps or higher for its own 4K/UHD playback.
First, are you broadcasting or watching?
“Internet speed for 4K live streaming” can mean two different things. When you broadcast, your encoder sends data to the platform, so upload capacity and stability matter. When you watch, the stream reaches your device, so download capacity matters. These figures describe different tasks and should not be compared as if they were the same measurement.
Upload speed for broadcasting 4K on YouTube
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends the following bitrates for 2160p (4K). The bitrate is the amount of data the encoder sends each second; the recommended value depends on codec and frame rate.

These are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates, not recommended broadband-plan speeds. Your connection needs to sustain the outgoing stream in real conditions, with capacity left for fluctuations and other network use. The official guidance does not specify a universal headroom percentage, so there is no defensible single upload-speed figure that suits every location and setup.

What changes the upload requirement?
- Frame rate: YouTube’s recommendations are higher for 60 fps than for 30 fps.
- Codec: The table gives different recommendations for H.264 and AV1/H.265.
- Network conditions: Wi-Fi quality, congestion, service-provider conditions, and other devices can affect the speed and consistency available to your encoder.
Download speed for watching 4K live events
Netflix recommends a stable connection of 15 Mbps or higher for its 4K/UHD playback, including live events. This is Netflix’s recommendation for its own service, not a universal minimum for every live platform. Multiple simultaneous streams, downloads, video calls, or other household activity can add to the connection’s total demand. Netflix also notes that many factors can affect streaming video quality.
How to check whether your connection is ready
- Test the connection where you will use it. For a broadcast, check upload performance at the encoder’s actual location and on the network you will use. An advertised plan speed does not establish what the setup can sustain.
- Set the encoder to the intended 4K format. Use the relevant YouTube bitrate recommendation for your resolution, frame rate, and codec; do not treat a viewer-side download recommendation as a broadcast setting.
- Run a representative rehearsal. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and testing before the livestream. Use the intended resolution and frame rate, with representative movement and audio, rather than judging from a static scene.
- Watch stream health during the event. A successful speed test is only a snapshot. Monitor the platform’s stream-health indicators during the broadcast and respond to instability rather than assuming the connection will remain unchanged.
Platform support is not interchangeable
Platform capabilities differ and may change. YouTube publishes 4K live encoder settings. An official Twitch help result surfaced for this topic said Twitch did not offer 4K or AV1 streaming at that time, but the help page could not be opened to confirm its current status. Check Twitch’s current guidance before planning a 4K broadcast there.
