To test an internationalized website, check more than whether translated words appear: verify language and text-direction metadata, scripts and layout, locale-sensitive forms and formats, navigation, and the cultural fit of content. Internationalization (i18n) prepares a product for adaptation; localization (l10n) adapts it for a particular language and locale. Translation review is only one part of the test plan.
What is the difference between internationalization and localization?
W3C defines internationalization as designing and developing a product so it can be localized for audiences that vary by culture, region, or language. Localization adapts the product or its content to the language, cultural, and other requirements of a specific target locale. W3C recommends treating internationalization as a foundational design step: retrofitting a product can require awkward and difficult re-engineering. W3C: Localization vs. Internationalization
In practice, i18n testing asks whether the site can support different locales; l10n testing asks whether it works well for a specific one. A site may display translated text and still fail because its layout, input handling, dates, navigation, or content assumptions do not fit the locale.
How do I test an internationalized website?
Start by choosing the locales and user journeys the site actually supports. For each one, exercise real pages and flows in a browser, using representative translated content and realistic data. 1. Check language, direction, and encoding
- Confirm the page declares its primary language and that passages in another language are identified appropriately.
- Check text direction for both left-to-right and right-to-left pages. Include embedded content such as numbers, names, or Latin-script product codes in RTL text, and verify that punctuation and ordering remain understandable.
- Use UTF-8 and declare the character encoding. Check that text survives page loads, form submission, storage, and subsequent display without replacement characters or corruption.
- Inspect the rendered page in a browser as well as its markup and HTTP headers. A declaration can be present but the actual behavior can still be wrong.

2. Exercise scripts, typography, and layout
- Test representative scripts and longer translated strings. Look for clipped text, overlap, broken wrapping, controls that no longer fit, and layouts that assume English text length.
- Check language-sensitive fonts, shaping, line breaking, justification, letter spacing, and text selection where relevant to the scripts you support.
- Verify that links, buttons, menus, error messages, and responsive layouts remain usable after localization.

3. Test forms and locale-sensitive data
- Try realistic names, including names with different ordering, length, and character sets.
- Test addresses, postal codes, and phone numbers using formats appropriate to each supported locale; do not assume every user has the same fields or formatting conventions.
- Check how dates and times are displayed, interpreted, entered, and validated. Include ambiguous dates and relevant local formats in functional tests.
- Test labels, help text, validation messages, and error recovery in the target language, not just successful submission.

4. Review localized content, navigation, and cultural assumptions
- Check that localized pages can be selected and found through visible navigation, with language choices understandable to their intended users.
- Review images, examples, symbols, and other content for assumptions that may not fit the target locale. Adapt them where needed.
- Have people with knowledge of the locale review linguistic accuracy, tone, and cultural fit; a technical checker cannot determine whether a translation is correct or appropriate.

Which tools help test website internationalization?
