That map makes it possible to inspect how pages connect, find pages with no incoming links, and review whether important content is reachable through useful paths. It is an audit model—not a Google ranking formula.
What does it mean to model internal links as a graph?
A page inventory tells you which URLs exist; a link graph also records how a reader or crawler can move among them. In graph terms, pages are nodes and links are directed edges. A link from page A to page B does not imply that B links back to A.
Nodes: the pages in your audit
Use one node for each meaningful destination in the site inventory, usually a canonical public page. Give each node attributes that help you interpret it, such as canonical URL, page type or topic, indexability state, editorial or business importance, and last update. These are practical data-model choices, not fields Google requires.
Edges: links between pages
Represent a link as an edge from its source page to its destination. Preserve useful details such as anchor text, location on the page, whether it appears in crawlable markup, destination response, and crawl date or version. These attributes help distinguish links that point to the same page but provide different context.

Make URL normalization explicit. If a trailing slash, query parameter, fragment, redirect, or alternate URL form represents the same destination for your audit, decide how it maps to the canonical node. Otherwise, URL variants can appear as separate pages and distort the graph.
What can a link graph help you inspect?
Pages with no incoming links
A node with zero incoming edges has no internal links pointing to it in the collected dataset. Check whether the page should be reachable from a relevant category, hub, or related article. Google’s link best-practices guidance says, “Every page you care about should have a link from at least one other page on your site.” Google Search Central’s link best practices explain the guidance.

Routes to important pages
Trace paths from navigation, category pages, or related content to destinations your readers need. A graph can reveal a page that is technically linked but only through an unexpected or poorly connected route. Whether that route is appropriate depends on the site’s purpose and the reader’s task; the cited Google guidance does not set a universal ideal click depth or number of incoming links.
Context and broken destinations
Review the source page and anchor text, not just the count of edges. Google recommends crawlable links and descriptive anchor text that helps people and Google understand the destination. An edge pointing to a redirect or missing page is also worth checking, as is a link whose rendered implementation is not present as a crawlable anchor with an href. Clusters and weak connections
Groups of pages may be tightly connected internally but poorly connected to the rest of the site. That can be intentional, but it is a reason to inspect whether readers have a relevant way to move between related sections. Treat graph patterns as prompts for editorial review, not as proof of a ranking problem.
How to map internal links across a website
- Define the page universe. Decide which public pages belong in the audit, how canonical URLs are represented, and which URL variants map to the same node.
- Collect link data. Crawl rendered pages or use another suitable source. Record at least source URL, target URL, anchor text, and whether the link appears in crawlable markup. Keep the crawl date or version with the data.
- Normalize and validate URLs. Apply your redirect and canonical rules consistently, check destination responses, and avoid treating query variants or fragments as separate pages unless there is a specific reason.
- Build the directed graph. Keep edge direction intact. If the same source links to the same destination in distinct places or contexts, preserve those edges when that distinction matters to your audit.
- Inspect the patterns. Find nodes with no incoming links, important destinations with few useful contextual links, unexpectedly deep paths, weakly connected clusters, and edges that lead to redirects or missing destinations.
- Make reader-led changes and recrawl. Add or revise a link when it helps a reader reach relevant next information. Check the rendered page, then collect a fresh crawl so the graph reflects the change.
Which data sources can you use?
Google Search Console’s Links report
The Search Console Links report can show and export link data, but Google describes it as a sample rather than a complete representation of every link on a property. Export limits can also matter for large sites. Use it as one view of the links Google reports, not as a guaranteed complete graph.

A site crawl
A crawler can collect links across pages that it can access and process, giving you a dataset suited to graph analysis. Its output still depends on the pages and link implementations it can reach and parse. The available guidance does not establish a best crawler, guarantee completeness, or compare current vendor capabilities; validate the collection method against your site’s rendering and URL behavior.

There is no universal threshold for ideal link count, in-degree, click depth, or graph density in the cited Google guidance. Evaluate the structure using criteria tied to crawlability and reader navigation instead.

Google recommends a logical site structure and links to important pages from relevant pages. Its guidance on sitelinks and site structure discusses those practices without prescribing a universal number of links per page. For URL consistency, see Google’s URL structure best practices, which also warn that combinatorial faceted URL patterns can create excessive URL spaces.
What a graph cannot tell you by itself
A link map describes relationships in the dataset you collected; it does not establish that a particular graph shape will improve rankings, traffic, indexing, or citations. Google’s guidance supports using crawlable links to help it discover pages and understand relevance, but does not promise a search-performance gain from a specific graph pattern.
Likewise, a page with many incoming links is not automatically more useful to readers, and a page with few links is not automatically a problem. Use the map to find relationships that merit review, then make decisions based on page purpose, link context, and the paths readers need.
