If your live-streaming source is interlaced, convert it to progressive video before delivery and choose an output frame rate that preserves the motion detail you need. For moving camera or broadcast footage, one progressive frame per field can retain smoother motion than combining each pair of fields into one frame, but it asks more of the processing and encoding pipeline. First verify the source format and field order; then decide where deinterlacing happens and check the destination’s current ingest requirements.

What interlaced video means for a live stream

Interlaced video divides each frame into two fields, each containing alternating lines. The fields are captured at different moments, so movement can occur between them. Simply combining the fields into a progressive frame may produce comb-like edges or other motion artifacts. Deinterlacing converts the fields into progressive frames; the chosen method determines how motion and detail are represented. AMD’s Video Processing Subsystem Product Guide describes spatial and temporal processing approaches for addressing these artifacts.

“1080i50” and “1080p30” are not interchangeable labels: the first describes an interlaced source mode, while the second describes progressive output. Frame-rate notation can also vary by standard and context. Do not assume “30i” means 30 progressive frames per second; identify the actual source rate and the destination rate before configuring the chain.

Identify the source before changing settings

Check the signal at the camera, broadcast receiver, or other source and confirm what the capture device actually receives. Establish whether it is interlaced or already progressive, its resolution and rate, which field comes first, and whether it is live camera/broadcast material or telecined film. These distinctions matter because deinterlacing, inverse telecine, and adaptive processing are different operations; AWS Elemental Live’s user guide describes different conversion paths for different source types.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Read the source and capture device’s format information rather than inferring scan type from a resolution label alone.
  • Verify field order where the source or device exposes it. A wrong field-order interpretation can damage motion cadence even if deinterlacing is enabled.
  • Confirm the exact interlaced mode is supported by the capture device and whether it deinterlaces internally. Do not assume every capture card accepts every mode or performs conversion.
  • If the source is already progressive, do not add deinterlacing as a blanket fix; it is a conversion for interlaced input.

Choose the progressive output cadence

The central choice is whether to make one progressive frame from each pair of fields or one from each field. The second approach produces a higher frame rate and can preserve more temporal motion detail, while requiring the pipeline to process and encode more frames.

Approach What it does Trade-off
One output frame per two fields Combines each field pair into one progressive frame. AWS gives 1080i30 to 1080p30 as an example. Lower output frame rate and fewer frames to process; less temporal motion detail than field-rate output.
One output frame per field Creates a progressive frame at each field’s time position. AWS gives 29.97 to 59.94 and 25 to 50 examples; AMD illustrates 1080i60 to 1080p60. Can retain more motion cadence, but doubles the output frame rate relative to one frame per field pair and increases processing and encoding load.

Those examples come from different format conventions; verify the source’s rate notation and the destination’s accepted progressive rates rather than mixing labels. Apple’s HLS authoring specification for Apple devices says interlaced source content must be deinterlaced. For live NTSC/ATSC sources it recommends 60 or 59.94 fps, and for live PAL sources it recommends 50 fps. It recommends converting 30i content to 60p rather than 30p. These are Apple HLS recommendations, not universal requirements for every streaming destination.

Decide where deinterlacing happens

Deinterlacing may occur in the capture hardware, the streaming application, or a live encoder. Choose one verified point in the chain and confirm downstream preview, compositing, and encoding receive clean progressive frames whenever the delivery path requires progressive output.

  • Capture hardware: Use this only if the device supports the exact source mode and its processing behavior is documented or otherwise verified. A capture card category is not a guarantee of 1080i support, a particular field order, or built-in conversion.
  • Streaming application: Check the current software and device documentation for how the application receives and deinterlaces the signal. An older OBS forum thread about a 1080i50 camera/capture workflow discusses progressive output and handling conversion at or before capture; it dates from 2021, so treat it as an example rather than current definitive OBS guidance.
  • Live encoder: Encoder pipelines can expose deinterlace configuration. AWS Elemental Live documents deinterlacing in its pipeline; use the controls and mode appropriate to the actual source.

Avoid accidentally applying conversion at multiple stages. Check the signal after capture, in preview, and at the encoder input where possible, so you can locate combing or cadence changes rather than trying to fix them with unrelated output settings.

Check the destination and encode separately

Deinterlacing determines scan conversion, not the final codec, container, bitrate, or service compatibility. Verify the destination’s current live-ingest specifications separately, then configure the encoder to deliver an accepted progressive format. Apple’s HLS requirements cited above apply to authoring for Apple devices; they should not be presented as the ingest rules for every platform.

OBS’s audio/video formats guide identifies H.264 as its default, widely compatible web-video codec and discusses container trade-offs for recording. Recording-format advice is not a universal live-stream requirement, so do not assume that a recording container setting resolves an ingest or deinterlacing problem.

Verify picture quality and system load

Test the complete chain with representative motion before relying on it live. Watch moving edges for combing, judder, or uneven cadence, and check that output resolution and frame rate match the selected destination mode. Field-rate output creates more frames; confirm the intended capture, processing, and encoding setup can sustain it rather than assuming that a device or computer will.

  • Use motion with both static detail and movement, such as a person walking past a detailed background.
  • Compare the selected deinterlacing output against the original signal and confirm motion does not look doubled, combed, or uneven.
  • Verify that the streaming application and encoder report the expected progressive resolution and frame rate.
  • Check the destination’s live preview or a private test stream before the public broadcast, where the service provides that option.

Troubleshoot common interlaced-streaming problems

Combing appears around moving objects

Likely cause: Interlaced fields are being combined without deinterlacing, or the conversion is happening too late for an earlier preview or compositing stage. Fix: Confirm whether the input is truly interlaced, then enable deinterlacing at a verified point before the stage showing artifacts. Check that the output is progressive.

Motion looks jerky after conversion

Likely cause: Output cadence is lower than the source’s field cadence, or the source rate has been misread. Fix: Verify the actual source and field-rate convention. If smoother motion is important and the pipeline can handle the load, test one progressive frame per field rather than one per field pair.

Motion appears to step backward or has odd cadence

Likely cause: Field order is wrong or has not been identified. Fix: Confirm which field is first in the source and how the capture device reports it; select the matching processing order and test moving footage again.

The capture device will not accept the source mode

Likely cause: The card does not support the exact input resolution, rate, or scan type. Fix: Verify its supported modes and whether deinterlacing occurs in the hardware. If the mode is unsupported, use a compatible capture path instead of relying on an unverified setting.

The stream is progressive but rejected or incompatible

Likely cause: Scan conversion has been mistaken for full destination compatibility. Fix: Check the destination’s current live-ingest requirements, including accepted resolution, frame rate, and encoding settings. Progressive output alone does not establish that the codec or other settings are accepted.

The computer or encoder struggles at field-rate output

Likely cause: The higher frame rate increases processing and encoding work beyond what the setup sustains. Fix: Check system load during a representative test. If it cannot keep up, compare a lower-rate progressive output against the destination’s requirements and the motion quality you need.
