The Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol is an open-source standard that lets independent blockchains exchange data with one another. It defines how each chain verifies the other’s state and how packets of data travel between them. It does not decide what those packets mean. That job belongs to the applications running on each chain, such as a token transfer or a cross-chain contract call. IBC is a protocol, not a single bridge operator or an end-user app.
What IBC is, in plain terms
IBC is an interoperability protocol for moving data encoded as bytes between blockchains. The official IBC overview describes the Cosmos team as a primary contributor and maintainer since the protocol’s launch, working alongside open-source contributors to maintain it and extend its functionality.
The protocol is split into three broad layers:
- IBC Clients track and verify the state of a counterparty chain.
- IBC Core handles packet transport, routing, and authentication against the client.
- IBC Applications implement the business logic of a particular cross-chain workflow.
This separation is the key idea. The transport layer can carry many kinds of messages for many applications without defining the rules of any one of them.
How IBC Classic is built
The IBC Classic architecture page describes the original model, which is also called IBC v1. It has four building blocks that work together.
#1 Best Overall
- Proven security at scale: Over 9 years and millions of cards issued with no known remote hacks, while military‑grade EAL6+ security keeps your private keys locked inside the chip. Your cryptocurrencies stay strongly protected from online attackers.
- Tap once to manage your entire crypto wallet across 90 blockchains - no USB cables or Bluetooth, no batteries, no setup. Access 14,100+ coins & tokens, DeFi, NFTs, and staking instantly from your phone
- Smart backup: Use your second Tangem Wallet as your Backup keys with end‑to‑end encryption; no more papers, pictures. If one card is lost, the remaining can still restore full access, with an optional seed phrase available for advanced users.
- Engineered to last up to 25 years: Waterproof (IP69K), shockproof and tested for extreme temperatures from −25°C to 50°C. A durable cold wallet with long‑term protection and independently audited security.
- Trusted by 6 million users worldwide (4.9 App Store, 4.8 Google Play) - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
Clients
Each chain keeps a client that represents its counterparty. The client holds the counterparty’s consensus state and provides functions for verifying claims about that chain’s state. Without a working client, a chain has no basis for trusting packets from the other side.
Connections
A connection links two clients, one on each chain. It establishes the pairing that the rest of the communication depends on.
Channels
Channels connect application modules on the two chains and carry packets between them. Each channel is tied to a connection, so the verification behind a connection applies to every channel that runs over it.
Relayers
Relayers are off-chain processes. They watch chain state and submit the transactions needed to move packet flows forward. A relayer carries transactions and proofs between chains. It does not decide whether a packet is valid, because the receiving chain verifies that through the client.

The packet lifecycle
A packet moves through four operations, and each one is checked by IBC Core before the application acts on it:
- Send. The sending application creates a packet on its chain.
- Receive. The counterparty chain verifies the packet’s proof against its client and passes the packet bytes to the receiving application.
- Acknowledge. The receiving side records the outcome, and that result is returned to the sender.
- Timeout. If the packet is not delivered within its allowed window, the sender can process it as timed out instead of waiting indefinitely.
The receiving application interprets the packet bytes and applies its own state change. IBC Core only confirms that the packet is authentic and routes it to the right place.
What applications do with IBC
The application layer supplies the meaning and the action for transported data. The IBC overview names two standard application types:
- Interchain Fungible Token Transfer (IFT) moves tokens between chains.
- General Message Passing (GMP) carries cross-chain contract calls and other general messages.
Developers can also implement the IBC application interface to build custom applications. Exact names, versions, and availability depend on the chain or implementation, so check that project’s documentation before assuming a feature is live.

The IBC home page also mentions Interchain Accounts and Interchain Queries as ecosystem features. These are application-level capabilities built on the protocol. They are not part of its core definition.
Security and trust assumptions
Client verification is central to IBC’s security model. The IBC site describes light-client approaches as common, while noting that clients can use other verification models. The protocol’s client abstraction is designed to allow that flexibility, and each verification method carries its own assumptions.
For this reason, “IBC” alone does not tell you how safe a particular connection is. To assess one, identify:
- which client is in use on each side and what evidence it verifies;
- how client updates are submitted;
- which conditions freeze or halt the client.
Two connections that both say they use IBC can therefore have different trust properties. Judge each connection by its own client and verification model.

IBC Classic and IBC v2
IBC Classic was originally deployed in 2021. IBC v2 was announced on February 20, 2025, as a simplified evolution. The IBC v2 announcement says the design aims to lower implementation overhead and support more diverse blockchain architectures. It keeps the packet send, receive, acknowledgement, and timeout semantics, and it simplifies setup around clients, a router, and applications.
| Aspect | IBC Classic (v1) | IBC v2 |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Originally deployed in 2021 | Announced February 20, 2025 |
| Core building blocks | Clients, connections, channels, relayers, applications | Clients, a router, applications |
| Packet semantics | Send, receive, acknowledgement, timeout | Same packet semantics, per the announcement |
| Setup complexity | Connection and channel setup as described in the Classic architecture | Simplified, per the announcement; no detailed comparison figures stated |
| Live support on a given chain | Depends on each chain | Not stated in the announcement; check each chain’s deployment documentation |
The v2 announcement is a dated statement of intent. It does not prove that any particular chain runs v2 today. Verify support chain by chain.
Adoption figures and their dates
The IBC project’s own history page reports the following figures. They are historical numbers published by the protocol’s site, not independently audited current totals, so they should not be read as present-day network statistics.

Where IBC fits among interoperability approaches
When comparing IBC with other cross-chain designs, the useful dimensions are the verification model and trust assumptions, whether packets have native receipts and acknowledgements, which application workflows are supported, how relaying and liveness work, and what implementation requires. The IBC project’s comparison material uses these same dimensions, but it is published by IBC itself, so cross-check its claims about competing systems before drawing firm conclusions.
In short, IBC is the transport and verification layer for chains that can run its client logic. Whether a given bridge or cross-chain app is built on IBC is a separate question that depends on that project.
For the protocol’s own description of how the pieces fit together, see the official explanation of IBC clients, core, packet handling, and applications.
