The Intel Core i9-11980HK is an eight-core, 16-thread mobile processor that debuted in Q2 2021 as Intel’s flagship 11th-generation Tiger Lake-H chip. It pairs strong launch-era single-thread results with a 45–65 W configurable power range, but it is now discontinued. In 2026, its performance matters less than the specific laptop’s cooling, graphics card, condition and warranty.
What the Core i9-11980HK is
The i9-11980HK is a laptop CPU built on Intel’s 10 nm SuperFin process. Intel specifies eight cores, 16 threads, 24 MB of Intel Smart Cache and a maximum turbo frequency of 5.00 GHz. Its configurable TDP-down is 45 W and TDP-up is 65 W; those figures describe processor power configurations, not a promise that every laptop will sustain the same clocks or performance.
Intel lists support for up to 128 GB of DDR4-3200 memory. The “HK” designation identifies an enthusiast-oriented mobile part with an unlocked multiplier, though the ability to adjust it in practice depends on the laptop firmware, cooling and manufacturer controls.
What Tiger Lake-H added to the laptop platform
The processor platform offered 20 direct PCIe Gen 4 lanes and up to 44 total PCIe lanes across the platform. That gave laptop makers room to connect discrete graphics and fast storage, but the actual ports and device layout vary by model. Intel also specified Thunderbolt 4 connectivity at up to 40 Gbps and DDR4-3200 memory support.

At launch, Intel said more than 80 enthusiast laptop designs were planned around 11th-generation H-series processors. That was a launch-era design target, not a current count of available i9-11980HK laptops. Intel’s 2021 launch announcement described the range as aimed at gaming, content creation and workstation systems.
How fast is the i9-11980HK?
CPU benchmarks: strong single-thread results, less decisive multicore results
Launch-era testing indicates a split rather than an across-the-board win. In HotHardware’s comparison set, the i9-11980HK led in single-thread Cinebench R20 and R23 and Geekbench 5 results. In Cinebench multi-thread work, Ryzen 9 5900HS and other eight-core Ryzen 5000 mobile processors remained ahead. These comparisons are directional: benchmark systems, power settings and cooling were not identical.

That pattern can make the Intel chip feel responsive in workloads that lean on a few fast cores, while sustained work that uses all cores may favor a competing Ryzen system. The exact gap depends on the laptop and workload; the preview results do not establish a universal ranking for every finished retail machine.
Gaming results belong to the whole laptop
Tom’s Hardware tested a pre-production reference laptop, not a processor in isolation. Its system achieved 91 frames per second in Far Cry New Dawn at 1080p Ultra, 62 fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1080p Highest, and 48 fps in Red Dead Redemption 2 at 1080p Medium. These are results for that complete system and configuration, not guaranteed frame rates for every i9-11980HK laptop.

The reference sample was configured at 65 W PL1 and approximately 109–110 W PL2, illustrating why processor model numbers alone do not describe sustained performance. GPU choice, cooling capacity, power limits and drivers all affect game results. A laptop with the same CPU but a different graphics card or thermal design can perform quite differently. Tom’s preview explicitly framed its results as a preview of upcoming systems rather than a processor-only review.
Is the i9-11980HK still good for gaming?
It can still be a capable gaming-laptop CPU when paired with an appropriate GPU and a cooling system that lets it sustain performance. But there is no sound answer based on the CPU name alone. For a used or OEM laptop, compare the complete machine against alternatives at the same price: graphics performance, cooling under sustained load, screen, memory and storage configuration, battery condition, warranty and upgrade options.

For current games, the discrete GPU is often the more important performance determinant at higher resolutions and quality settings. A well-cooled i9-11980HK laptop with a strong GPU may outperform a newer-CPU laptop with weaker graphics, while a poorly cooled system can fall short of what the processor’s headline specifications suggest. Neither launch marketing nor the reference-laptop frame rates substitute for checking the particular model.
Can you overclock an i9-11980HK laptop?
The i9-11980HK is unlocked, and Intel’s brief documents support for Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU), per-core voltage control, and AVX2/AVX-512 voltage or offset controls. Those capabilities describe processor-level enthusiast controls; they do not guarantee that a laptop maker exposes every setting or that a particular chassis can safely dissipate additional heat.

Before attempting tuning, check the exact laptop’s BIOS and manufacturer documentation for supported controls, and understand that added voltage or power can raise temperatures and reduce stability or component lifespan. Laptop cooling and firmware limits are often the practical constraints, so an unlocked CPU does not make every laptop a suitable overclocking platform.

Do not choose by brand or peak turbo frequency alone. Compare the complete laptop against the actual alternatives you can buy or support, using the factors below:
- Single-thread responsiveness: the i9-11980HK led HotHardware’s tested group in several single-thread launch benchmarks.
- Sustained multicore throughput: Ryzen 5000 eight-core competitors were ahead in HotHardware’s Cinebench multi-thread comparison.
- GPU pairing and cooling: these shape gaming performance and how consistently the CPU can operate under load.
- Power limits: manufacturer settings affect sustained clocks; the reference sample’s 65 W PL1 and roughly 109–110 W PL2 are not universal laptop settings.
- Connectivity: check the actual laptop’s storage slots, ports and memory configuration rather than assuming every platform capability is implemented.
- Battery life, price, warranty and upgradeability: evaluate the individual laptop; the launch previews do not establish current battery life, long-term reliability or a present-day value ranking.
What laptops use the i9-11980HK, and should you buy one in 2026?
The chip appeared in enthusiast gaming and workstation-class laptops from the 2021 generation. Intel’s launch materials said more than 80 designs were planned, but they do not establish which listings are in stock today. Intel now marks the processor discontinued on its current product specification page. In 2026, expect to evaluate complete used, refurbished or remaining OEM systems rather than treat the CPU as a normal new desktop-style retail purchase.
No current stock, price or warranty terms are established here. Check the seller’s exact model number, whether the laptop is new or used, battery and screen condition, included charger, return period, and who provides warranty support. A sound deal is the laptop that meets your needs at a justified price and has credible support—not simply one carrying a once-flagship CPU badge.
