“Intel i Series” is an informal name for Intel Core processors labeled i3, i5, i7 or i9, chiefly under Intel’s older naming scheme. The i-number marks a product tier, not a processor generation or a guaranteed speed. To identify what a chip can do, check its full model number, suffix and exact specifications. Intel now also uses Core 3, Core 5 and Core 7 names, alongside the separate Core Ultra family.

What does “Intel i Series” mean?

Intel does not use “i Series” as the name of every current Intel processor family. People generally use it as shorthand for Intel Core models with an i3, i5, i7 or i9 tier label. Those labels help distinguish products within a naming scheme, but they are not complete specifications: capabilities vary by exact model and generation. Intel’s processor naming guide distinguishes the Core and Core Ultra families and describes newer Core naming as well.

Intel’s naming documentation reviewed for this article does not expand the letter “i.” It is safest not to assign it a meaning such as “Intel” or “intelligent.”

How to read an older Core i model number

Consider Core i5-13600K. In this legacy naming pattern, “Core” is the family, “i5” is the tier, “13” identifies the generation, the remaining digits identify the model, and “K” is a suffix with additional product information.

  • Robust Power & Thermal Design: Engineered with 125W base power and 250W max turbo power to sustain high‑intensity
  • Core i7-13700K: Intel identifies this as a 13th-generation processor because “13” follows the i7 tier.
  • Core i9-14900K: “14” identifies a 14th-generation model.

Intel’s generation-reading rule applies to the legacy Core i naming pattern; it should not be carried over to newer Core or Core Ultra names, or to Pentium, Celeron or Xeon processors. See Intel’s guide to finding the generation of Core processors.

What do the letters at the end mean?

A suffix can signal characteristics such as whether a processor is unlocked, its graphics requirements, or its mobile or desktop class. Examples in Intel’s published naming information include:

How does i3 compare with i5, i7 or i9?

The tier label alone does not establish a reliable performance ranking across generations or workloads. An i7 label does not guarantee that a processor will outperform every i5: compare the exact models, their specifications and relevant workload benchmarks. Intel points readers to generation-specific product briefs for differences among desktop i3, i5, i7 and i9 processors in its desktop Core comparison guide.

  • Graphics requirements, including whether a separate graphics card is needed
  • Compatibility with the motherboard or laptop platform

How to identify current Intel Core names

Intel’s current naming includes more than the older i3/i5/i7/i9 labels. The Core family includes Core 3, Core 5 and Core 7 models, while Core Ultra is a separately branded family with its own tiers. Intel’s naming guide describes newer Core processor numbers as a shorter, three-digit system; SKU numbers beginning with 1, 2 and subsequent numbers indicate Series 1, Series 2 and subsequent series, respectively. Don’t apply the older “digits after i” generation rule to these names. Intel explains its Core and Core Ultra names here.

How to check whether a processor is for a desktop or laptop

A model’s tier does not tell you by itself which type of computer it is intended for. Intel advises checking the processor’s specification page and its “Vertical Segment” field to verify the product type. Desktop and mobile processors are built for different form factors; for an overview, see Intel’s explanation of desktop and mobile processor differences.

Generation names are not a performance timeline

Intel’s desktop collection list records launch quarters for several recent generations: 10th Gen in Q2 2020, 11th Gen in Q1 2021, 12th Gen in Q4 2021, 13th Gen in Q4 2022 and 14th Gen in Q4 2023. The same list includes Core Ultra Series 2 desktop collections in Q4 2024 and Q1 2026. These are Intel-listed launch quarters for the collections it covers, not a complete history of every mobile and desktop processor. A newer generation label by itself also does not tell you how a model performs in a particular task. See Intel’s desktop processor collection and launch-date list.
