Integration testing and functional testing describe different dimensions of software testing: integration is a test level, while functional is a test type. A test can be both—for example, an integration-level checkout test that verifies the required behavior when a payment provider approves or declines a transaction.

Integration testing vs. functional testing at a glance

Dimension Integration testing Functional testing
What the label describes A test level and its scope A test type and its objective
Main focus Interfaces and interactions between integrated components or systems Whether specified functions are performed as required
Typical test basis Interface contracts, architecture, and interaction requirements Functional requirements, use cases, or behavior specifications
Example question Do the checkout service and payment provider exchange the expected data and handle responses? Does the system accept a valid order and handle an invalid one as specified?
Can it overlap with the other label? Yes. An integration test can check functional behavior. Yes. Functional testing can be performed at multiple test levels.

ISTQB distinguishes levels, which organize testing by test object, development stage, and objectives, from types, which organize activities around objectives or quality characteristics. Its Foundation Level syllabus says test types can be applied at every test level. ISTQB Foundation Level Syllabus v4.0.1; ASTQB, Section 2.2.

What integration testing checks

Integration testing examines interfaces and interactions between parts that have been combined. The relevant boundary may be between components within one system or between the system under test and another system or external service.

Component integration testing

This level focuses on interfaces and interactions between components. For example, a test might verify that an order service sends the expected payment request to a payment component and correctly processes its response.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

System integration testing

This level focuses on interfaces between the system under test and other systems or external services. A checkout application communicating with an external payment provider is one example.

The ISTQB Foundation Level Syllabus v4.0.1 lists component testing, component integration testing, system testing, system integration testing, and acceptance testing as five test levels. It distinguishes the two integration levels by the boundary under examination.

What functional testing checks

Functional testing evaluates whether a component or system performs the functions specified for it. Its focus is the required behavior, not a particular point in the development process. The ISTQB syllabus identifies functional completeness, correctness, and appropriateness among its objectives; the ISTQB Glossary describes it as testing whether a component or system satisfies functional requirements.

Functional checks can be performed at different levels. A component-level check might verify that a function calculates a total correctly; a system-level check might verify that a customer can place an order under specified conditions. The expected behavior comes from the applicable requirement or specification.

How one checkout test can be both

Suppose a checkout service sends payment details to an external provider. Consider a test that submits a valid order, verifies the request sent to the provider, receives an approval response, and checks that checkout reports the order as accepted.

  • It is an integration test because it exercises the boundary and interaction between the checkout system and payment provider.
  • It is a functional test because it checks whether checkout behaves as specified after payment succeeds.

A related test could exercise a decline response. The integration aspect is whether the response is exchanged and handled across the boundary; the functional aspect is whether checkout produces the required result, such as rejecting or otherwise appropriately handling the order. These examples illustrate the ISTQB distinction; they are not claims about a particular product or test execution.

How to describe a test clearly

Avoid using “integration” and “functional” as mutually exclusive labels. When both matter, name the objective and the boundary so a reader of the test plan can tell what behavior is checked and where the interaction occurs.

  1. Name the test object or boundary: for example, checkout service to external payment provider.
  2. State the requirement or interaction: for example, submit a payment request and handle an approval response.
  3. Specify the expected outcome: for example, the order is accepted after a valid approval.
  4. Use both labels when useful: “functional system integration test for successful payment authorization.”

This phrasing separates the test’s level and scope from its behavioral objective, reducing ambiguity in plans, reviews, and defect reports.

ScreenshotNeo is not a software-testing framework

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, not a tool for classifying or executing integration and functional test suites. It may be relevant when a test workflow needs website screenshots: its API can return an image or PDF from a URL, and its MCP server provides tools for AI agents. The service states that it removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and that bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed.

Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo to try the free allowance.
