Use Paged.js in a Rails app in one of two ways: load its browser polyfill for an interactive paginated preview and browser-based printing, or run the Paged.js CLI with a headless browser when PDF generation should happen in a scripted workflow. Rails-specific asset wiring depends on the JavaScript setup your application already uses. The official Rails and Paged.js documentation describe their respective pieces separately, not a single Rails integration recipe, so verify the complete path—scripts, styles, fonts, and images—in your app and deployment environment.

Choose the rendering workflow first

Paged.js transforms HTML and print CSS into paginated layouts. Its browser polyfill can paginate a document for preview and let a reader use the browser’s print dialog to save a PDF. Its CLI is intended for command-line rendering with a headless browser. These are different execution paths, not interchangeable Rails settings. See Paged.js’ project overview and getting-started guide.

Choice Use it when What Rails must make available
Browser polyfill A user needs to preview pagination and initiate printing in a browser. The page, Paged.js script, and stylesheets must load in the browser; the polyfill needs access to the CSS.
CLI and headless browser A scripted process needs to produce PDFs without a user opening the print dialog. The CLI’s rendering process must be able to reach the rendered document and its styles and assets.

The browser path depends on the reader’s print settings when saving as PDF. The CLI documentation describes command-line options, but how to orchestrate it in a Rails application and deploy its runtime is application-specific. The CLI guide dates to 2019; check the current package instructions and runtime compatibility before adopting its command in production.

Deliver Paged.js through your Rails JavaScript setup

Start by identifying how the application currently serves JavaScript. Rails documents import maps for delivering modules without bundling and bundlers for apps that use a build step. Its asset documentation also covers JavaScript inclusion and the app/assets/builds output used by jsbundling-rails. Follow the existing application setup rather than adding a second JavaScript pipeline just for Paged.js. See the Rails guides for working with JavaScript and the asset pipeline.

If the app uses a bundler

Install Paged.js using the package instructions appropriate to the bundler and package version already in use, then import it from the entry point that Rails builds and serves. Make the resulting script available on the pages that need pagination. The cited Rails and Paged.js sources do not certify a particular package import or bundler configuration for Rails, so confirm that the distribution you install exports the browser functionality your app expects.

If the app uses import maps

Verify that the Paged.js distribution you intend to use can be served in a form compatible with your import-map setup. The Rails guides explain import-map delivery generally; they do not establish a Paged.js-specific pin configuration. Test the exact package, module format, and browser behavior rather than assuming that a pin alone makes the library work.

If you serve a standalone script asset

Make the script available through the asset mechanism your application uses, then include it in the layout or view that renders the paginated document. Rails documents javascript_include_tag for JavaScript files. Keep the include limited to pages that need Paged.js where practical, and confirm the generated asset URL resolves in the browser.

Build the browser preview and print flow

The Paged.js getting-started guide describes a web document with HTML and CSS, a Paged.js script, and a web server that lets the polyfill access CSS. A Rails page is a natural place to serve that document, but the complete setup still needs validation in the application’s chosen asset configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Prepare the document. Render the content in a Rails view and provide print-specific CSS. Keep the source markup meaningful and structured so it can be styled for print as well as displayed on screen.
  2. Load the stylesheet and library. Ensure the view loads the stylesheet containing the print rules and the Paged.js browser script. Place the script in the layout or view that owns the preview flow, using your Rails app’s current delivery mechanism.
  3. Open the page in a browser and inspect pagination. Check page breaks, content that spans pages, and any fonts or images that affect layout. The polyfill needs to be able to retrieve the relevant CSS; a stylesheet that works on one page may still fail if its URL or access differs in the rendering context.
  4. Let the reader print. Once pagination is visible, use the browser’s print flow and its Save as PDF option. Print settings affect the resulting PDF, so verify the settings appropriate to your intended output.

There is no single Rails view snippet that is safe to prescribe across import-map, bundler, and standalone-asset applications. The important integration check is that the browser actually receives the intended Paged.js script, document markup, and print stylesheet together.

Generate PDFs with the Paged.js CLI

For an automated workflow, the Paged.js documentation describes installing pagedjs-cli and pagedjs, then invoking the CLI on an HTML file. Its example command is:

pagedjs-cli index.html -o result.pdf

The guide says the CLI uses a headless browser and runs the script automatically. The command is the documented example, not a complete Rails deployment recipe. Your process must supply an HTML document the renderer can access, and ensure its CSS, fonts, and images resolve in that environment. Decide whether to render a static document, expose a Rails-rendered page to the rendering process, or use another app-specific orchestration approach; the reviewed sources do not prescribe one.

Validate the rendering environment

  • Check that the renderer can load the document URL or file you give it.
  • Check that stylesheet and asset URLs resolve from the renderer’s network or file context—not just from a user’s browser session.
  • Confirm that any required authentication or application data is available to the rendering process. The cited guides do not define a Rails authentication integration.
  • Test the output in the same kind of runtime and deployment environment used for the scripted job, including the installed Paged.js and browser versions.

Because the cited CLI documentation is dated 2019 and does not specify a Rails release or current package compatibility, consult current installation guidance before locking a production dependency. Record the Rails, Paged.js, and rendering-runtime versions you validate.

Keep pagination rules in CSS; add JavaScript only when needed

Start with print CSS for page layout and breaks. If a document requires transformations that cannot reasonably be expressed in markup or CSS, Paged.js documents handlers and hooks for customization. The hooks documentation dates to 2020, so verify the relevant API against the version installed in your app before relying on a hook name or lifecycle detail. Troubleshoot the integration by layer

The script loads, but pagination does not appear

Inspect the browser’s network and console output. Confirm that the page includes the intended Paged.js distribution and that it is executable in the format your Rails JavaScript setup serves. With an import map or bundler, recheck the package’s module compatibility and the application’s actual built or pinned output.

Styles are missing or the layout differs

Check the stylesheet URL and whether the browser or headless renderer can access it. Paged.js’ browser setup depends on access to CSS. Also check the final rendered document for asset paths that behave differently outside the browser session where the page was authored.

The browser preview works but automated PDF generation fails

The two workflows run in different contexts. For the CLI, verify that its headless browser can reach the HTML and every required stylesheet and asset. A page that depends on a user’s authenticated browser state may not be available to an unattended rendering job; the cited documentation does not provide a Rails-specific solution for that case.

The output differs between environments

Compare the Rails app’s served markup and assets with those available to the renderer, then verify the tested versions of Rails, Paged.js, and the browser runtime. The cited sources do not establish a supported version matrix or performance guarantee for a Rails/Paged.js combination.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a replacement for Paged.js pagination or its PDF output. If your task is to capture a rendered web page as an image, one GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Those screenshot and PDF capture capabilities do not establish that ScreenshotNeo will reproduce a Paged.js-specific paginated print layout.
