Yes, you can add KDE Plasma to an existing Linux Mint installation when your Mint release exposes a compatible Plasma package in its enabled repositories. This is an add-on desktop, not a current Mint edition: Linux Mint’s release table currently lists Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce, including Mint 22.3 “Zena” based on Ubuntu Noble with support through April 2029.

The exact package name, dependencies and login-session choices must be checked on the specific Mint installation. KDE’s general documentation commonly points to a distribution metapackage named plasma-desktop, but that guidance is not a tested Mint 22.3 recipe.

What “install KDE on Mint” actually means

Adding Plasma installs another desktop environment alongside Cinnamon, MATE or Xfce. It does not automatically convert Mint into a KDE edition, and it does not require removing the desktop already installed. At the sign-in screen, a session selector can normally let you choose which installed desktop to start; the available label depends on the packages and display manager on your system.

Linux Mint does not currently publish a KDE edition. Its official current release list contains Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce editions. KDE Plasma is instead obtained from the distribution’s package collection, subject to the repositories enabled for your Mint release.

Two safe ways to evaluate Plasma

Route Changes the installed Mint system? Persistent configuration What it proves Verification needed
Add Plasma packages to Mint Yes. Packages, dependencies and session entries are added. Yes. User settings and system changes can remain after you return to your original desktop. How Plasma behaves with your hardware, Mint release and existing software. Exact package name, repository availability, dependency changes and any display-manager prompt.
Boot KDE-enabled live media No installation change while running the live session. Normally no lasting configuration after shutdown. Whether Plasma starts and feels usable on the hardware. Find a distribution that offers suitable Plasma live media; KDE does not promise a particular Mint live image.

KDE documents live media as an optional way to try Plasma from a bootable USB drive without installing it. A live test is useful for hardware and workflow checks, but it is not a substitute for testing Plasma inside your existing Mint installation.

Before installing: record the experiment

Make the test reversible and reproducible. Write down:

  • Your exact Mint release and edition, including whether it is 64-bit.
  • Enabled software repositories and the package source that supplies Plasma.
  • The package name and version offered by those repositories.
  • The complete set of packages the package manager proposes to add, remove or change.
  • Your backup and restore method for personal files and important desktop configuration.
  • Any display-manager choice shown during installation. Do not change it merely because an old guide recommends doing so.
  • The session name selected at login, the applications tested and any warnings, missing features or hardware problems observed.

Take a snapshot or make a tested backup if your normal recovery plan supports it. Installing a second desktop can add duplicate applications, settings panels and background services, so note the starting state before changing anything.

Verify the package for your Mint release

KDE’s documentation advises looking for the distribution’s desktop metapackage, typically plasma-desktop. “Typically” is important: package names and repository contents vary by distribution and release. First use Mint’s package-management tools to search for Plasma and inspect the candidate version and dependencies. Confirm that the package comes from repositories you trust and that it is intended for your exact Mint release.

Do not treat an old Ubuntu instruction as a Mint procedure. The Ubuntu Community Help Wiki page distinguishes kde-plasma-desktop (a minimal set) from kde-standard (a larger set), but it describes Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS and was last edited on 16 December 2021. It does not establish what current Mint repositories provide.

What to confirm before accepting changes

  • Plasma packages are available for the installed Mint release, not just for another Ubuntu or Mint version.
  • The proposed transaction does not unexpectedly remove Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce or essential Mint components.
  • You understand the additional disk space and applications being installed.
  • You know how to select your original desktop again at login.
  • You have a recovery path if the graphical login or session behaves unexpectedly.

Install and select the session

Once the package metadata is verified, use Mint’s normal graphical package manager or its repository-backed package tool to install the verified Plasma metapackage. Follow the package manager’s list of proposed changes rather than copying a command written for an older Ubuntu release.

  1. Search your enabled repositories for the verified Plasma desktop package.
  2. Review every package addition, removal and dependency change.
  3. Install only after confirming the transaction and your backup.
  4. Restart or end the graphical session when the package manager finishes, according to the prompt it gives you.
  5. At the login screen, open the session menu and choose the Plasma entry. Keep your existing Mint desktop selected when you want to return to it.
  6. Record the session label, desktop version shown in system information and any startup errors.

The exact session label, display-manager prompt and package set are system-specific. If Plasma is not offered after installation, do not remove packages at random: return to the package manager’s transaction details and verify that the Plasma session package was installed for your release.

What makes this an honest experiment

Calling the exercise an experiment requires observed results, not just a successful package transaction. Report the Mint release, repository source, package versions, requested changes, display-manager selection, login session and tests performed. Test the activities that matter to you—display scaling, multiple monitors, audio, Wi-Fi, suspend and resume, graphics acceleration, file associations, printers, Bluetooth and your everyday applications.

Separate observations from expectations. The available evidence establishes that Plasma is distributed as software through distribution package collections and that live media can provide a no-install trial. It does not establish a performance advantage, universal hardware compatibility, a particular package version or a guaranteed conflict-free result on every Mint installation.

Should you install it or use live media first?

Choose live media first when

  • You mainly want to see whether Plasma starts and supports your graphics, displays, networking and input devices.
  • You do not yet have a backup or a clear recovery plan.
  • You want to avoid persistent settings and package changes.

Add Plasma to Mint when

  • You need to test Plasma with your existing Mint applications, files, repositories and user account.
  • You have verified package availability for your exact release.
  • You accept additional packages and the possibility of duplicate desktop applications and settings.

A live session is safer for a first look; an in-place installation is the relevant test if your goal is to keep Mint and use Plasma as an alternative login session.

Returning to your original Mint desktop

Select Cinnamon, MATE or Xfce from the login session menu to return to the desktop you used before. Leaving Plasma installed avoids an unnecessary removal operation while you compare sessions. If you later decide to remove Plasma, identify the exact packages installed by your package manager and review the proposed removals carefully; do not use a blanket removal command copied from the historical Ubuntu guide.

Limits of the current evidence

The exact Plasma package version, repository availability, login-session options and interaction with a particular Mint installation remain release- and system-specific. Mint repositories and package names can change, so verify these details for the release you are running before following installation instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is KDE Plasma an official Linux Mint edition?

No. Linux Mint’s current listed editions are Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce; Plasma can be added from compatible distribution packages instead.

Can I try Plasma without replacing Linux Mint?

Yes. Bootable KDE-enabled live media can provide a no-install trial, while installing Plasma packages alongside Mint preserves the existing installation and adds another login session.

Should I remove Cinnamon after installing Plasma?

No. Removal is unnecessary for trying Plasma and should not be based on the old Ubuntu-specific guide.
