A scheduler can report an error even after Instagram has published a post. If an operator or automated workflow retries before checking what happened, duplicate posts may result. Instagram’s documented publishing process separates media readiness from publication, but the title alone does not establish why three posts appeared within eight hours. The cause remains unknown without the relevant job and API logs.
Why an error can coexist with a published post
Instagram’s documented API workflow has separate steps: create a media container, check its status when needed, and then publish it. Meta’s Reels example describes FINISHED as meaning the media has been uploaded and is ready for the next publish request—not that the post is already published. This distinction matters when a monitoring check treats an earlier stage as final success, or when a publish request’s result is lost or misread. A timeout can also leave the caller unsure whether the request succeeded. Retrying while the outcome is still uncertain could create another post. These are plausible failure patterns based on the documented stages, not established explanations for this specific three-post incident.

Three duplicate posts appearing within eight hours describe an outcome, not a root cause. Without records from the scheduler, integration, or Instagram API, it is not possible to determine whether one job retried, multiple jobs ran, or someone published manually. The account type, media type, API version, timestamps, and post IDs are also unknown.

A 2026 Reddit post recounts an automation error that cost its author two duplicate posts; the author says the script began recording media count before publishing and rechecking it after an error. How to verify whether Instagram already published
Before retrying after an error or timeout, reconcile the intended post against the available request and media records. Meta’s example publish response provides an Instagram media ID; persist that identifier and use it to distinguish a confirmed publication from an earlier readiness signal.

- Correlate the attempt: Find the local job ID and container ID for the intended post, and record each request time, response status and body, and retry count.
- Separate readiness from publication: Treat container status such as
FINISHEDas readiness to publish, not confirmation that publication occurred. - Check for publication evidence: Look for the publish response and returned media ID, then reconcile that result with a later media record or permalink if available.
- Compare the visible posts: Establish whether the three posts contain the same media and caption, and whether their records point to one job, separate jobs, or a manual action.
- Retry only when justified: If the outcome is ambiguous, check the recorded request and resulting media before resubmitting. Retry only when the available evidence supports that no post was created.
What a safer publishing workflow records
Keep publication progress in durable, distinct states rather than one success flag. For example, record whether a post is created, ready, publish-requested, confirmed, or failed. The labels are an operational design choice; the important point is not to treat readiness as publication.
- Store the local job ID, container ID, request timestamps, responses, retry count, and returned media ID for each attempt.
- Make the transition to confirmed depend on publication evidence, not just successful upload or a ready container.
- On an ambiguous timeout, reconcile the attempt before allowing a retry. This is a prudent workflow rule, not a claim that Instagram guarantees idempotent publishing.
- Check where duplicate prevention operates: in the publishing service, scheduler or middleware, or job store. A control in one layer should not be mistaken for a platform-wide guarantee.

What evidence would resolve the incident
A useful postmortem correlates every attempted publication with its job and container, then compares request and response records with the resulting Instagram media. The decisive question is whether the same intended post was submitted again while an earlier publish outcome was still unresolved—or whether a different path produced the additional posts. If the IDs and logs are unavailable, keep the cause open rather than attributing the duplicates to a particular timeout, retry bug, or Instagram defect.
