Instagram has no publicly verified, current character cap for the question or answers in its native Stories Poll sticker. Figures of 24 and 26 characters for poll options appear in third-party references, but they conflict and neither establishes Instagram’s current rule. A separate figure—100 characters for a question and 24 for each of two options—applies to Story ads created through Sprinklr, not necessarily to the native poll sticker.
What is the Instagram Stories Poll character limit?
The exact current limit for a poll question or answer in Instagram’s native Stories composer is not established by an official source available here. SocialRails says Instagram does not publish a figure and that numbers circulating online disagree, so a single definitive cap would be misleading: SocialRails’ overview of Instagram poll limits.
If you need to fit copy to a strict character count, check it directly in the Poll sticker composer using the account and app version you plan to publish with. Do not treat a third-party number or an ad-composition limit as confirmation of the native sticker’s behavior.

Third-party guides report different figures for poll options, and their dates and authority matter:
#1 Best Overall
- 26 characters per response: Social Media Examiner reported this in a guide from around 2017. It is historical third-party guidance, not a verified current Instagram rule: Social Media Examiner’s Instagram Stories poll guide.
- 24 characters per option: TextCountify reports this figure in a 2026 reference, but the available reference does not establish it with an official Instagram citation: TextCountify’s Instagram character-limit reference.
The disagreement is a reason not to present either figure as Instagram’s confirmed current cap. It also does not establish whether limits vary by app version, account, or region.
Does the 100-character question limit apply to native Story polls?
No such transfer is established. Sprinklr’s Help Center describes fields in its workflow for creating Instagram Story ads: a poll question of up to 100 characters and two options of up to 24 characters each. These are limits documented for Sprinklr’s ad-composition fields, not proof of the limits in Instagram’s native Stories Poll sticker: Sprinklr Help Center: Instagram Story ads.
| Poll surface or guidance | Question | Answers | What the figures establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native Instagram Stories Poll sticker | No current official cap verified | No current official cap verified | Third-party figures conflict; check the current composer. |
| Instagram Story ads in Sprinklr’s workflow | 100 characters | Two options, 24 characters each | Sprinklr’s ad-field descriptions; not the native sticker’s confirmed limits. |
| Social Media Examiner guide, circa 2017 | Not established by this figure | 26 characters per response | Historical third-party guidance. |
| TextCountify reference, 2026 | Not established by this figure | 24 characters per option | Recent third-party guidance without an official citation in the available reference. |
What about polls in other Instagram features?
“Instagram poll” can refer to different surfaces, including Stories, ads, Reels, feed posts, or group chats. A limit reported for one surface should not be assumed to apply to another. In particular, Meta’s announcement about poll-vote insights concerns broadcast channels, not character limits for the Stories Poll sticker: Meta’s broadcast-channel update.

How to check the limit before publishing
- Open the Instagram Story composer for the account you will use.
- Add the Poll sticker and enter the question and answer text.
- Watch for any counter, warning, or input restriction in the current composer. If the app does not make the cap clear, shorten the text until it is accepted rather than relying on an unverified published figure.
- Repeat in the specific publishing workflow if you are creating a Story ad through a third-party platform; its field rules may differ from the native sticker.
