Meta’s Facebook Help Center defines scraping as automated collection from a website or app. It notes that scraping can be authorized, such as search-engine crawling, or unauthorized when automation violates the service’s terms. That distinction matters more than whether a page is publicly visible.
Do not treat a public profile, place page, or hashtag as an unrestricted data source. Do not bypass login or consent screens, defeat CAPTCHAs, rotate accounts to evade limits, disguise a bot as a browser, or use an undocumented endpoint after access has been withdrawn.

Can you currently use an Instagram location API?
Do not assume that an old tutorial still works. A research source reports that Instagram stopped supporting its geographic-location index in its API; the cited collection service then ended its Instagram collection. That is evidence of a historical change, not proof that every location-related feature is unavailable today.
A targeted search for current official developer documentation did not establish a present-day location-index endpoint or its limits. Before building anything, check Meta’s current developer documentation, product terms, authentication requirements, permitted use, and data-retention rules. If the documentation does not explicitly describe place search or location-tagged post access for your account type and app, treat that capability as unavailable rather than relying on a vendor’s claim.
What an approved integration normally requires
- Create or select a Meta developer app and identify the Instagram product and account type it supports.
- Read the current permissions and review requirements. Request only permissions necessary for the stated purpose.
- Use the documented authorization flow. Store access tokens in a secret manager, not in source code or a browser bundle.
- Confirm which accounts, media types, place fields, and time ranges the approved product exposes.

1. Specify the smallest useful dataset
Write a data specification before writing code. For example: place identifier, post identifier, publication time, media type, and an aggregate count by day. Avoid collecting profile bios, contact details, comments, precise coordinates, or media copies unless they are essential and authorized.

Public access does not settle permission. Review Meta’s terms, the permissions attached to your app, and laws that apply to your organization and the people represented in the data. Location-linked information can reveal where someone lives, works, worships, receives medical care, or spends time.
3. Use an official, documented route
If current documentation exposes a place or location feature for your approved account, call only that documented interface. Respect its pagination, rate limits, field restrictions, and deletion requirements. If it does not, use a first-party export, a licensed partner, survey data, or aggregated public statistics instead of reverse-engineering the website or mobile app.

4. Minimize and protect the result
- Hash or remove account identifiers when identity is not required.
- Keep coarse areas instead of exact coordinates where possible.
- Set an automatic retention deadline and delete raw media after analysis.
- Restrict access, encrypt backups, and log who downloaded an export.
- Honor deletion or objection requests when your legal and contractual obligations require it.
5. Validate quality without expanding collection
Check duplicate post IDs, timestamps, pagination gaps, language coverage, and timezone conversions. Record the API version, query, approval scope, and retrieval time so another analyst can reproduce the aggregate without retaining unnecessary personal data.
Why location data needs extra care
Meta’s US privacy notice treats location-related information as personal information and lists precise geolocation among sensitive personal information subject to the notice’s stated limitations. That is a jurisdiction-specific example, not a complete statement of law worldwide. Your obligations may differ by country, state, sector, age group, and purpose.

A location-tagged photo can identify a person even when the account is public. Combining posts over time can create a movement history. Avoid publishing maps or rankings that allow a small group or individual to be re-identified. For safety, health, protests, shelters, schools, or religious sites, aggregate aggressively or do not collect the data.
What Meta’s enforcement history tells you
Meta reported a 2020 case involving automated collection from more than 100,000 Instagram accounts. In a separate 2022 account of the MyStalk case, Meta said the service scraped profiles of over 350,000 users. These are case-specific counts, not estimates of how common scraping is.
Meta also reported blocking billions of suspected scraping actions per day across Facebook and Instagram in a 2021 article. That is Meta’s historical reported figure, not an independently verified current rate. The practical lesson is simple: unauthorized automation can trigger blocks, account action, legal claims, or exposure of data you were not entitled to retain.
Methods that should not be presented as a solution
- Undocumented private endpoints: an endpoint observed in a browser or app is not automatically licensed for your app.
- Credential sharing or session-cookie harvesting: this creates security and authorization risks.
- CAPTCHA and bot-check bypasses: defeating a control is not a compliant data-access strategy.
- Account farms and proxy rotation: disguising volume does not create permission.
- Bulk copying of public profiles: public availability does not eliminate privacy, terms, or deletion duties.

The tutorial may describe a discontinued or restricted API. Check current Meta documentation and your app’s approved permissions; do not substitute a private endpoint.
