Avoid third-party “account recovery” services: the available official guidance describes platform recovery and identity checks, not outside services. Which options you see can depend on whether you can access your linked contact details and whether Instagram offers an identity check for your account.
Choose a recovery path based on what you can still access
Use Instagram’s own recovery prompts first. The available official guidance does not establish one universal sequence for every locked or compromised account, so follow the options Instagram presents rather than relying on instructions for a different account or platform.
- You can access the linked email or phone: Keep that contact method available and follow the recovery prompts Instagram provides. Secure the email account as well, since access to it may be important for receiving account messages.
- You cannot access the linked email or phone: Try to regain control of that contact method through its provider, or update your Instagram account information if you still have a way into the account.
- Instagram offers video-selfie verification: This may be an option for an account with photos of you. It is not established as an option for every account.
- You are recovering a hacked account: Use Instagram’s own prompts. The exact current screens and branches for Instagram hacked-account recovery are not established by the official pages cited here; do not assume Facebook’s hacked-account process applies.
What to expect from Instagram’s video-selfie check
Meta says Instagram may ask someone who is having trouble logging in to an account containing photos of them to submit a video selfie. The stated purpose is to confirm the person’s identity and that they are a real person. While the review is underway, the account remains inaccessible. If the check is approved, Instagram emails a password-reset link to the secure email address you supplied. If it is not approved, Meta says you will be notified and may be able to submit another video in the app. This is a possible review period for this identity check—not a general recovery-time guarantee.
Meta also says the submitted video selfie will not appear on Instagram and will be deleted within 30 days. These details apply to the video-selfie process described by Meta, not to every form of account information or every recovery route.
If you lost access to your signup email or phone
First try to recover the email address or phone number through its provider. If you still have access to Instagram, update the account’s contact information so you can receive future account messages.

Meta’s Help Center gives an important limitation: if you cannot access the original email address and your Instagram account was not linked to Facebook, it says it cannot provide access to the account. The guidance therefore does not promise that Instagram can bypass inaccessible contact methods in every case. If Instagram offers you a video-selfie check, that is a separate possible identity-verification route; its availability and outcome are not guaranteed. If the app does not offer it, the cited guidance does not establish another universal workaround.

After you get back in, strengthen account security
Secure the email account associated with Instagram, then enable two-factor authentication on Instagram. Meta’s 2021 security guidance describes two-factor authentication through a phone number or an authenticator app, and Login Request alerts for attempts from an unrecognized device or browser. Menu names and placement may have changed since that guidance, so check the current Instagram app for the available security settings rather than relying on an old menu path. - Choose a secure email address you can access and keep its own sign-in protected.
- Turn on two-factor authentication using an available method that you can reliably access.
- Review security alerts and respond to login attempts you do not recognize.
- Follow Instagram’s current prompts if you find account details or login activity you did not change.
Do not use Facebook’s hacked-account instructions as Instagram steps
Meta’s separate “Recover a Hacked Account” result directs Facebook users to facebook.com/hacked from a device previously used to log in to Facebook. That is Facebook-specific guidance, not confirmation of Instagram’s recovery screens or process. For Instagram, return to Instagram’s own recovery prompts and follow the available branches.
