The Insta360 X5 is an 8K 360 camera for people who want to choose the framing after they shoot. It captures a full spherical view that you can reframe into conventional video, and adds PureVideo for dim scenes, InstaFrame for simultaneous flat and 360 recordings, and user-replaceable lenses. That flexibility makes it compelling for action and creator footage—but 8K does not mean every reframed clip will look like a conventional 8K video, and high-resolution recording brings battery, heat, and file-handling trade-offs.
What the Insta360 X5 does—and what “8K” means
The X5’s headline mode records a 360-degree image at 7680 × 3840 pixels, up to 30 frames per second. Because the camera records the whole sphere, you choose a view later by reframing the footage. The final video shows only a portion of that capture, so its detail depends on the framing and output you select; the 8K capture figure is not a promise that a reframed conventional shot will have the same detail as native 8K footage from a standard camera. Insta360’s specifications also list 5.7K 360 video up to 60 fps and 4K 360 video up to 120 fps. Single-lens video reaches 4K60.
This is the camera’s core appeal: you can record first and decide whether the finished clip follows the rider, shows the landscape, or uses another angle later. A conventional action camera is simpler when you already know the field of view you want and prefer a direct, fixed-frame recording. The X5’s 360 workflow is more adaptable, but it adds reframing and editing decisions.
How good is the X5 in low light?
PureVideo is the X5’s dedicated low-light mode. Insta360 recommends 8K30 PureVideo for dim indoor scenes and nighttime shooting. The company says the camera’s dual 1/1.28-inch sensors are 144% larger than the X4’s; that is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent measurement. TechRadar’s reviewer found PureVideo a substantial improvement over the X4 in low light.
#1 Best Overall
- 8K30fps 360° Video with Dual 1/1.28" Sensors: Capture stunning detail with dual 1/1.28" sensors shooting up to 8K30fps. Film epic adventures, everyday moments, and more, all in sharp, immersive 360° video with better clarity, color, and dynamic range
- Triple AI Chip Design, Better Low Light: Shoot confidently even in challenging lighting. X5’s triple AI chip design powers advanced noise reduction and image processing, delivering crisp, vibrant footage even in dim or night conditions
- Invisible Selfie Stick: Create impossible third-person views with no selfie stick in sight! Capture everything in 360°, then choose your angles later using AI-assisted reframing—perfect shots, every time
- InstaFrame Mode: Get a ready-to-share flat video instantly. Choose auto-framing to let the camera track you, or lock in a fixed angle. Preview the 360° video later to add in any unexpected moments, too
- FlowState Stabilization + 360° Horizon Lock: No gimbal needed. X5’s FlowState Stabilization and full 360° Horizon Lock deliver buttery-smooth, level footage, even during action-packed moments, bumps, or full rotations
There are trade-offs: TechRadar reports that PureVideo does not support HDR or 60 fps. It is therefore a useful choice when the scene is dim and smoother high-frame-rate footage or HDR is not the priority—not a universal best setting for every shot. For ordinary daylight action, choose a mode based on the frame rate and output you need rather than assuming the low-light mode is always preferable.
InstaFrame: a flat clip and a 360 file in one recording
InstaFrame records an auto-framed flat video and a full 360 file at the same time. The flat version gives you a ready-to-use view, while the spherical file preserves the option to reframe later. That can save a step when you need a straightforward deliverable but do not want to give up the flexibility of 360 capture.

The flat InstaFrame output goes up to 4K30. TechRadar notes that the mode is limited to 30 fps and removes HDR, so it is not the right choice when either higher frame rates or HDR is essential. In practice, InstaFrame is best understood as a convenience mode with a second, more editable copy—not a way to get every feature at once.
Battery life, heat, and recording plans
Insta360’s current X5 specifications report the following laboratory-tested recording times. They are test results, not guaranteed runtimes in everyday use; settings and conditions can affect how long a recording session lasts.

| Recording mode | Reported runtime |
|---|---|
| 8K30 | 93 minutes |
| 8K24 Endurance Mode | 115 minutes |
| 5.7K30 | 135 minutes |
| 5.7K24 Endurance Mode | 208 minutes |
The figures show why it is worth matching the mode to the shot: the highest-resolution option has a shorter reported runtime than the listed 5.7K modes. TechRadar’s reviewer did not experience an overheating shutdown, but cautioned that 8K recording can heat the camera. The reviewer suggested that outdoor movement, which provides airflow, is a better setting for sustained 8K capture than a stationary indoor setup. Plan for breaks or a lower-resolution mode when recording for a long time.
Replaceable lenses and waterproofing
The X5’s lenses are user-swappable, and Insta360’s UK store lists a replacement-lens kit. Replaceability gives owners a repair option if a lens is damaged, but it does not make the lenses scratch-proof or make replacement risk-free. Check the kit’s compatibility with the exact camera model before buying.

The bare X5 is rated waterproof to 15 metres. A separate dive case is intended for deeper underwater use, but its rating belongs to that specific case, not to the camera by itself. If you plan to dive, confirm the stated depth rating and compatibility of the exact case you will use rather than treating the bare-camera rating as the case limit.
Should X4 owners upgrade?
The strongest reasons to move from the X4 are the X5’s improved low-light option, user-replaceable lenses, and the potential value of InstaFrame’s simultaneous flat and spherical recording. TechRadar judged the X5 a stronger all-around 360 camera than its predecessor, while also saying someone who bought an X4 recently may not need to upgrade immediately. If your current camera meets your needs and low-light performance or replaceable lenses are not important to you, the upgrade is less compelling. If those changes address a limitation you regularly encounter, they are more meaningful than the 8K label alone.
What to check before buying
- Editing compatibility: Check Insta360’s current phone and chipset requirements. A phone that can run the companion app may not necessarily meet the requirements for full-resolution editing.
- Storage: The camera records 360 video in INSV format and single-lens video in MP4. Confirm the current microSD card requirements and choose capacity with your planned recording modes and editing workflow in mind.
- Bundle contents: Insta360’s UK store has listed options including an invisible selfie stick, extra battery, lens guards, replacement lenses, and a dive case. Availability, prices, and bundle contents can change and may differ by country; verify the local listing before purchase.
- Price context: The US launch price announced on April 22, 2025, was $549.99. TechRadar reported launch-era standard-edition prices of $549.99, £519.99, and AU$929.99, and Essentials bundle prices of $659.99, £609.99, and AU$1,109.99. These are historical launch figures, not current quotes; check the seller and region for current pricing and included accessories.
Verdict
The Insta360 X5 makes the most sense when you will use its defining advantage: recording a full scene and shaping the shot afterward. PureVideo, InstaFrame, and replaceable lenses broaden its usefulness, but mode limits, finite recording time, heat during 8K capture, and the extra editing workflow all matter. It is a flexible creator camera, not a guarantee of effortless, native-looking 8K footage in every final frame.
