InSpectre can help you see whether a Windows PC reports selected protection indicators for Spectre and Meltdown. It is a compact status checker, not a comprehensive vulnerability scan: its publisher lists its last update as January 15, 2018, and the utility cannot supply missing firmware or operating-system support. Treat its result as a clue, then verify your PC’s protections using current Windows and device-vendor guidance.
What InSpectre checks
Gibson Research Corporation (GRC) describes InSpectre as a utility for examining a Windows system’s hardware and software capability to prevent Meltdown and Spectre attacks. Its interface presents status information, technical details and controls; a probe mode provides indicators that can be used in scripted assessment.
The documented probe reports eight flags concerning:
- Whether Windows recognizes Meltdown and Spectre.
- Whether the system is reported vulnerable to each of them.
- Whether the CPU lacks support for Spectre protection or for low-overhead Meltdown protection.
- Whether registry settings disable protection.
These signals can help explain particular aspects of the system’s state. They do not establish that a PC is free of every speculative-execution weakness, or that every protection relevant to its hardware and Windows build is enabled.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
How to interpret the result
Read InSpectre’s output as a report about the indicators it knows how to inspect, not as a definitive security certificate. A result depends on the machine’s processor, firmware, Windows version and configuration. GRC documented a specific detection problem on Windows 10 version 1703: its 32-bit application could report Spectre status inaccurately. Release 6 added a 64-bit probe to work around that issue. This history is a practical reason not to treat a displayed status as infallible on every system.
The utility’s buttons also have limits. They cannot create a hardware capability, install missing firmware or make an unsupported operating system provide protection. GRC notes that without updated firmware a system may remain vulnerable to Spectre, and its controls cannot make that system invulnerable.

Why InSpectre’s age matters
GRC’s page lists January 15, 2018, as the utility’s last update. Since then, Microsoft has documented additional speculative-execution issues, including Speculative Store Bypass, Rogue System Register Read, Lazy FP State Restore and L1 Terminal Fault. Its Windows guidance for speculative-execution side-channel vulnerabilities addresses mitigations in relation to affected hardware and operating-system configuration.
That later guidance does not mean InSpectre was updated to check those issues. The utility remains useful for its narrow, documented indicators, but it should not be used as a present-day, all-purpose scanner or as the final word on a current Windows PC’s protection.

InSpectre versus current vendor guidance
| Resource | What it is useful for | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| InSpectre | A compact summary of selected Meltdown and Spectre status indicators on Windows. | Whether the PC is protected against every later speculative-execution issue or has every current mitigation configured. |
| Microsoft and device-vendor guidance | Checking mitigations and recommended actions for the relevant Windows version, processor and firmware. | A universal answer without knowing the PC’s specific hardware, Windows build and firmware state. |
What to do to check your PC now
- Install available Windows updates. Use Windows Update, then check Microsoft’s guidance for the exact Windows version and processor in the PC.
- Check the PC or motherboard maker’s firmware instructions. Look up the model-specific BIOS or firmware guidance and follow the vendor’s process; a status utility cannot replace a firmware update.
- Confirm the machine-specific details. For an informed assessment, identify the hardware model, processor, firmware state, Windows build and current security-control output. An InSpectre result alone does not provide all that context.
- Use InSpectre only as a supplementary clue. Compare what it reports with the current instructions that apply to the actual machine rather than assuming a single green or red status resolves every question.
What about performance?
Security mitigations can have different performance effects depending on the mitigation, processor generation and workload. In a January 9, 2018, discussion, Microsoft said Variant 1 and Variant 3 mitigations generally had minimal impact in its experience, while Variant 2 remediation varied by CPU generation and workload. Those observations are historical, not a prediction or benchmark for a PC today. Do not disable protections based on a promised speed gain; use current, machine-specific vendor guidance when deciding how to configure a system.
