The PS5’s SSD was designed as part of a custom storage-and-I/O system to reduce the pauses that interrupt play—not as a guarantee that every game has no loading screens. Sony’s published headline figure is 5.5 GB/s of raw read bandwidth, and the design goal was to let developers stream assets and move players through game worlds with fewer obvious waits.
What’s special about PS5’s SSD?
Sony describes the PS5’s ultra-high-speed SSD and integrated custom I/O system as a coordinated design intended to remove barriers to play, particularly loading screens. The point is not simply that the drive reads data quickly: Sony says developers can stream assets into games at a high rate, enabling seamless play and near-instant fast travel. The system includes a custom decompressor, which is part of Sony’s explanation for how the I/O path supports that goal. Sony’s March 2020 technical announcement identified Mark Cerny as PS5 lead system architect and linked his architecture presentation.
Sony’s published figure is 5.5 GB/s raw read bandwidth. It is a specification for the SSD, not a measured loading rate for every game. The official FAQ does not establish a cross-game average, a guaranteed percentage improvement, or a universal loading-time result. Sony’s PS5 FAQ and storage guidance explain the system’s purpose and limits.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow can the SSD change game design?
When assets can be read and delivered quickly, developers have more scope to bring detailed content into view during movement, make fast travel less disruptive, or build rapid transitions into a game’s structure. Those are design opportunities, not automatic outcomes: each studio decides how to use the hardware, and the available developer comments are perspectives rather than controlled benchmarks.

- Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 4TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
- Brian Horton, creative director of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, said: “Beyond near-instant loading and fast-travel, the SSD and its speed allow us to more quickly load and display more detailed assets.”
- Gavin Moore, creative director at SIE Japan Studio, said of Demon’s Souls: “As developers [of Demon’s Souls], we are already changing the way we think about the SSD.”
- Mattias Engström, game director of Hitman 3, said: “The blitz-fast load times we are seeing on the PS5 console encourages [player] experimentation more than ever.”
- Marcus Smith, creative director at Insomniac Games, said: “The SSD and custom I/O architecture around it allows us to send players across dimensions with near-instant speed.”
These examples point to different uses: displaying assets during traversal, reducing the friction of repeated loading, and making transitions part of the experience. A developer’s suggestion that levels might eventually be unnecessary is a forward-looking question, not evidence that all games can dispense with levels or loading screens. The comments above are from Sony’s developer roundup.
Did Sony actually kill the loading screen?
No—not as a universal claim. “Killed the loading screen” is best understood as shorthand for Sony’s ambition to reduce loading barriers and give developers more control over how transitions feel. The cited official material does not show that every PS5 game has eliminated loading screens, nor does it provide a measured reduction across games. Some titles can make waits less noticeable or use fast transitions; that is different from proving that loading has disappeared.

How much storage does a PS5 have?
Storage capacity varies by model. Sony’s CFI-21XX manual lists a custom 1 TB SSD for the PS5 console and 825 GB for its Digital Edition. Those figures apply to that model group, not automatically to every PS5 revision. See the CFI-21XX manuals and safety guides for the model-specific documentation.
How can you add storage for PS5 games?
Choose an internal M.2 expansion drive if you want to launch PS5 games from added storage. Choose USB extended storage if your main goal is to archive PS5 games or play PS4 games directly. These options do different jobs:

M.2 expansion: keep PS5 games playable
Sony’s support guide specifies a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD with a capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB, supported form factors, and size limits that include the cooling structure. The drive needs effective heat dissipation, such as a heatsink or heat-transfer sheet; M.2 SATA drives are unsupported. Check the requirements for your particular PS5 model and confirm that the drive and its cooling structure fit before buying.
A sequential read-speed label alone does not guarantee the same performance as the internal drive. Sony cautions that even an M.2 drive with a sequential read speed above 5,500 MB/s may not perform exactly like the console’s internal SSD, and not every drive that meets the listed specifications is guaranteed to work. Sony’s M.2 SSD installation guide lists compatibility, dimensions, and installation details.

- Check the M.2 requirements and instructions for your PS5 model group, including the drive’s dimensions and heatsink fit.
- Gather a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver and install the drive by following Sony’s model-specific instructions.
- On first use, format the M.2 SSD when prompted. Formatting erases the drive’s existing contents.
USB extended storage: archive PS5 games or play PS4 games
USB extended storage lets you move PS5 games off the console, but you cannot play those games directly from the USB drive. Copy a PS5 game back to console storage when you want to play it. PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage. Sony lists a 250 GB minimum and 8 TB maximum for this option and notes that not every device is guaranteed to work. See Sony’s USB extended-storage guidance for the details.
What’s the difference between the PS5’s SSD and other SSDs?
The 5.5 GB/s figure describes the PS5’s internal SSD’s raw read bandwidth; it does not mean every drive with a similar sequential-speed rating will deliver the same game experience. Sony presents its internal storage as part of an integrated custom I/O system, while an add-on M.2 drive must meet the console’s compatibility, cooling, and physical-fit requirements. Even a drive that clears the stated speed figure is not guaranteed to match the internal SSD’s performance in every game.
