Linux-AI OS 1.0 “Star” is a free, 64-bit Cinnamon Linux distribution in the LMDE 7 / Debian 13 family. Its current-release AI features center on an Ollama-integrated assistant for system help and supported software tasks—not every advertised AI tool is included in the free release, and several capabilities remain planned. The available evidence describes the project’s features and recommendations; it does not establish independent hands-on test results.
What Linux-AI OS is—and what “built-in local AI” means
Linux-AI OS is an independent Linux distribution project. The project identifies version 1.0 “Star” as a 64-bit Cinnamon AI Edition based on LMDE 7 and Debian 13 (Trixie). It is offered as a free download, with a separate paid Premium edition. See the project announcement and download page for current release information.
Here, “built-in local AI” refers to an assistant integrated with Ollama and support for compatible models installed locally. The project says the assistant can respond to natural-language requests, look up system information, provide basic troubleshooting help, explain Linux commands, and handle some common application tasks. Its app installer is described as able to recognize, launch, and install common applications through natural-language requests. The feature list also says the assistant previews commands and asks for confirmation before dangerous actions.
That scope is not universal: the project cautions that assistant command coverage varies. Local execution is the project’s stated design, not an independent verification of every model, action, or Premium application.

What can the current Star release do with AI?
Assistant and software help
The project lists assistant support for installing software, explaining Linux commands, and basic troubleshooting. Its features page also describes natural-language interaction and system information lookup. For actions that modify the system, command previews and confirmation are described as safeguards; users should still review a proposed command before approving it.
Application actions
The integrated installer is intended to let users request common application tasks conversationally, including finding, launching, or installing supported applications. The project does not claim that every app or request is supported, and it explicitly says command coverage varies.

Which features are planned rather than included?
The project distinguishes Star’s current capabilities from future work. Its feature information identifies the following as planned or long-term rather than features to assume are ready in 1.0:
Recommended Free Tools
- Deeper system troubleshooting beyond basic help
- AI terminal assistance
- Security and optimization centers
- Advanced voice features
- Other automation capabilities

What does Linux-AI Premium add?
Star is the free edition. In a July 14, 2026 press release, the project said Premium adds seven applications and costs $49.95 as a one-time purchase, with no subscription. That is a vendor-published price and availability statement from that date; confirm the current terms on the official project site before buying.
| Edition or feature set | What the project lists |
|---|---|
| Star (free) | Cinnamon desktop, assistant help with software installation, Linux commands and troubleshooting, Welcome Center, and desktop style options. |
| Premium additions | AI Mail Assistant; Voice Conversation Studio; Image Creator; Image-to-Video Maker; Enterprise VM Manager; Professional Audio Recorder; and Ollama AI Manager. |
Linux-AI OS creator Kevin Richards described the Premium applications this way: “Every AI feature in Premium runs locally through Ollama, using models that ship with the ISO.” This is the creator’s statement in the project’s July 14, 2026 press release, not independent verification of the software or bundled models.

What hardware do you need?
The requirements depend on whether you mean installing the base desktop or running GPU-intensive AI Studio workloads. The project’s download page, accessed October 7, 2026, gives these figures:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Use | Project-stated hardware |
|---|---|
| Base desktop minimum | 8 GB RAM and 64 GB available storage |
| Base desktop recommended | 16 GB RAM and an SSD of 120 GB or larger |
| GPU-intensive AI Studio recommendation | 6-core-or-better CPU, 32 GB RAM, SSD of 250 GB or larger, and NVIDIA RTX 3060 12 GB or better |
The last row is an advanced-workload recommendation from the project, not a prerequisite for installing or using the base desktop. Actual model performance will depend on the chosen model and hardware; the published requirements do not establish a performance benchmark.

How to try Linux-AI OS safely
- Get the ISO and prepare USB media. The project lists the ISO at 13.15 GB and says to use a USB installer of at least 16 GB; it recommends 32 GB or a Ventoy drive. A USB installer is needed to boot or install the image.
- Verify the download. Compare the downloaded ISO’s SHA-256 checksum with the value supplied on the download page.
- Boot a live session first. The project says you can boot from USB and test the system before installing. Its release notes recommend trying live media before replacing an existing operating system.
- Back up important files before installation. The project’s release notes advise backing up data before replacing an operating system. Proceed with installation only after checking that the live session and hardware meet your needs.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
The product details above come from Linux-AI OS’s own announcement, download page, release notes, and features page. Tux Machines’ September 19, 2026 post reproduces only the opening excerpt of a ZDNET article about the distro. The full article and its test details are not established here, so this article does not claim to have personally installed or tested Linux-AI OS, nor does it compare its speed, usability, security, or model quality with other distributions.
