The “IBM 300-mm fab” in the original 2008 account was Building 323 in East Fishkill, New York. That is a historical snapshot, not a description of IBM’s current production operation. IBM’s recent public account of 300-mm chip fabrication instead focuses on quantum chips made at Albany NanoTech, coordinated with quantum research work in Yorktown Heights.

What the 2008 report meant by IBM’s 300-mm fab

Mark LaPedus’s EE Times report, published September 24, 2008, described IBM’s Building 323 in East Fishkill, New York. It covered that facility and the manufacturing plans and technology context IBM had at the time; it should not be read as a current inventory of IBM fabs or products.

Plans reported in 2008

The report said the fab was part of a state manufacturing investment program. It described a new annex intended to produce ASICs and game chips, while 45-nm and 32-nm processes were in research and development. Those details belong to the 2008 account: they do not establish what IBM makes at East Fishkill today.

Where IBM’s public 300-mm quantum-chip work is now

In November 2025, IBM said its Quantum Loon, Nighthawk and future roadmap chips are fabricated at the NY CREATES Albany NanoTech Complex using 300-mm wafer technology. IBM identifies Albany—not East Fishkill—as the site in this current public account. The stated work concerns quantum chips and development; it is not a claim that Albany is a high-volume commercial fab for general-purpose processors.

IBM Distinguished Engineer Christy Tyberg, who leads Quantum Fab Technology & Infrastructure, explained the role of the process capability: “If we had not started processing our chips at Albany using 300mm technology, we wouldn’t have achieved the success required to pull off our development roadmap.” The comment reflects IBM’s view of Albany’s importance to its quantum-chip roadmap.

How Albany and Yorktown contribute

IBM describes Albany and its Yorktown research center as parts of a coordinated workflow. Albany contributes semiconductor processing; Yorktown contributes quantum-physics expertise. The sites therefore have complementary roles rather than being interchangeable names for one fab.

IBM Research describes the Albany facility as focused on semiconductor research and development, materials science, nanotechnology and chip design. Its facility profile reports more than 100,000 square feet of semiconductor fabrication space across five buildings. That is IBM’s own description of its Albany site, not an industry-wide measure.

What IBM’s Albany milestones do—and do not—show

IBM reported in 2021 that its 2-nm nanosheet demonstration was produced on a 300-mm wafer at Albany. This is evidence of research capability at the site. A research demonstration does not, by itself, show that a technology is in volume production or establish the commercial status of a particular chip.

East Fishkill and Albany: two different snapshots

Aspect East Fishkill, Building 323 Albany NanoTech
Source and time EE Times account published September 24, 2008. IBM public account published November 2025; facility figures in IBM Research’s profile accessed in 2026.
Described role Historical fab plans included an annex for ASICs and game chips; 45-nm and 32-nm processes were described as in R&D in the 2008 report. IBM says it fabricates its Quantum Loon, Nighthawk and future roadmap chips using 300-mm wafer technology.
Status established by these accounts Historical description only; the 2008 report does not establish present-day IBM operations there. Current public description centers on R&D and quantum-chip fabrication; the cited accounts do not establish high-volume commercial production.
Related research role Not stated in the 2008 report. Coordinated with Yorktown quantum-physics expertise; Albany performs semiconductor processing.

How to interpret “IBM’s 300-mm fab” today

  • If the phrase refers to the EE Times story, it means East Fishkill Building 323 as described in 2008.
  • If the question is about IBM’s current public account of 300-mm quantum-chip fabrication, it points to Albany NanoTech.
  • If the question is whether IBM is mass-producing commercial 2-nm chips at Albany, the cited IBM material does not establish that. It establishes a 2021 research demonstration and later quantum-chip fabrication using 300-mm technology.
