EdgeConneX’s European footprint spans a proposed campus in northern Sweden, a hyperscale campus in development near Frankfurt, and operating facilities including Barcelona and Amsterdam. The headline Swedish figure—potential capacity of up to 1 GW—is conditional on administrative approvals, not a statement of capacity already under construction or in operation.

What EdgeConneX is building in Europe

The projects are at different stages, so their figures should not be added together as one European buildout total. EdgeConneX announced a proposal for Skellefteå, Sweden; the company separately confirms development of a hyperscale campus in Heusenstamm, near Frankfurt. Barcelona and Amsterdam provide context on the company’s existing footprint, but their published facility specifications are not new-project capacity.

Skellefteå, Sweden Proposed campus Potential capacity up to 1 GW EdgeConneX says the proposal is subject to administrative approvals.
Heusenstamm, near Frankfurt Hyperscale campus in development, according to EdgeConneX Cushman & Wakefield reported plans for two data centers, 57,000 m², around €600 million investment, and a target by 2027. The quantitative details are Cushman & Wakefield’s H1 2025 report, not an EdgeConneX project specification.

Amsterdam Existing campus Five data centers and more than 34,000 m² total space These are figures in an EdgeConneX 2023 data sheet, not a current availability claim.

Skellefteå, Sweden: a proposed campus with a conditional 1 GW ceiling

On February 27, 2026, EdgeConneX announced plans for a campus at Skellefteå, with potential capacity of up to 1 GW to support future AI and cloud workloads. The company said the proposal is subject to administrative approvals. That distinction matters: the 1 GW figure describes a potential upper capacity, not confirmed construction, delivered grid power, or operating data-center capacity.

The announcement establishes the location, intended workload focus, potential ceiling, and approval condition. It does not establish a construction start, final investment decision, allocated grid capacity, or delivery schedule. Those milestones would be needed to describe the campus as committed or under construction.

Heusenstamm: Frankfurt-area development and reported plans

EdgeConneX confirms that it is developing a hyperscale campus in Heusenstamm, outside Frankfurt. For additional scale and timing, Cushman & Wakefield’s H1 2025 update reports plans for two data centers spanning 57,000 m², with around €600 million of investment and a target by 2027. These are reported plans from the property-services firm; they should not be treated as specifications issued by EdgeConneX, and the timing may have changed since that report.

Cushman & Wakefield also reported that the plan would use green electricity and a new power line. Those are claims about the reported Heusenstamm plan, not evidence that every EdgeConneX project has renewable supply or confirmed grid delivery. The company’s Frankfurt community engagement document quotes Heusenstamm Mayor Steffen Ball: “Without data centers, there is no digitization.”

Barcelona and Amsterdam: existing facilities, not new-build totals

Barcelona

EdgeConneX describes its Barcelona facility as an 8 MW N+1 site. Its location material also describes carrier-neutral connectivity, subsea links, and proximity to a major substation. These details illustrate the role of power access and network routes at an operating location; they do not establish power or connectivity arrangements for the proposed Swedish campus.

Amsterdam

An EdgeConneX data sheet published in 2023 describes an Amsterdam campus with five data centers and more than 34,000 m² of total space. Because the specification is dated, it should be read as published portfolio context rather than a live statement of available capacity or current site conditions.

How to read the European buildout figures

The published numbers measure different things: potential capacity at a proposed site, reported building area and investment for a development, and specifications for existing facilities. They cannot be combined into a meaningful European pipeline capacity or investment figure. The sources cited here do not establish one comparable portfolio-wide total.

  • Stage: Skellefteå is a proposal subject to approvals; EdgeConneX says Heusenstamm is in development; Barcelona and Amsterdam are existing locations.
  • Scale: Sweden’s up-to-1-GW figure is a potential capacity ceiling. Heusenstamm’s area, cost, center count, and target timing are reported plans. Barcelona’s 8 MW and Amsterdam’s building and area counts describe existing sites.
  • Power and connectivity: The sources describe Barcelona’s substation proximity and subsea connectivity, and Cushman & Wakefield reports green electricity and a new power line for Heusenstamm. They do not establish identical provisions across the projects.
