InkBox 2.0 is a free, open-source eBook-reader operating system for selected older Kobo eReaders and the original Kindle Touch—not an official Kobo firmware update. Announced on June 28, 2023, it redesigned the library and added reader controls, experimental highlighting, and system changes. Compatibility depends on the reader’s exact board identifier, and installation can erase data or damage the device.
What is InkBox 2.0?
InkBox is a Qt-based reader operating system built on Alpine Linux. The project is documented in the Quill OS project, and InkBox 2.0 was described by its maintainers as the “Biggest release of InkBox OS ever.” It is a replacement environment for specific devices, not software supplied or supported as a normal Rakuten Kobo firmware update. The InkBox 2.0 release notes and Quill project wiki provide the project’s release and device context.
What changed in InkBox 2.0?
Library and reading features
The release overhauled the home page and library browser, adding Recent books and Pinned books views, as well as folder support. Reader controls gained line-spacing and margin options. Highlighting was added experimentally, with highlights exportable as JSON. The release also reports improvements to the reader framework and lockscreen, a better virtual keyboard, general interface refinements, and support for signed custom user applications. The official changelog describes these changes.
System and application changes
InkBox 2.0 overhauled its power daemon and Wi-Fi framework, and added Wi-Fi support for the i.MX507-based N705, N905C, and N613 devices. It also improved the keyboard in X11/KoBox, added To-Do and Qalculate apps, improved the update system, fixed an X11 screen-freezing issue, added kernel namespaces, and reworked system initialization. These are listed as release changes, not as standardized performance or battery-life measurements.

Which Kobo models support InkBox 2.0?
The release provides images for seven board identifiers. The project wiki maps those identifiers to the following retail models; check the identifier for your specific device rather than relying on its product name alone. The release page names the images, and the project wiki maps them to hardware.
| Image identifier | Mapped device |
|---|---|
| N705 | Kobo Mini |
| N905B or N905C | Kobo Touch |
| N613 | Kobo Glo |
| N236 | Kobo Aura (2nd Edition) |
| N437 | Kobo Glo HD |
| N306 | Kobo Nia |
The 2.0 release assets are named inkbox-2.0-n705.xz, n905b, n905c, n613, n236, n437, and n306_a; each has a SHA-256 checksum. Because board variants can require different images, verify the identifier and the relevant wiki guidance before choosing an image.

Can you use InkBox 2.0 on a Kindle Touch?
The project added support for the original Kindle Touch. However, launch coverage reported that its installation image was available by request with guidance rather than as a direct download. The release assets list Kobo images, so do not assume one of those files is suitable for a Kindle Touch. Check the release notes and project guidance for device-specific availability.
How do you install InkBox OS 2.0?
The documented workflow involves accessing the eReader’s internal microSD card and flashing an image. It is not a routine settings-menu update: the Quill wiki warns that proceeding can permanently erase reader data, and that physical damage is possible. Use a 4GB-or-larger microSD card for the documented installation or backup workflow, and only proceed if you can accept the risk and handle recovery.

- Confirm the exact board. Match the identifier on your Kobo to the supported model and image guidance in the Quill project wiki. Do not select an image based only on the retail model name.
- Protect the original data. The wiki recommends making a full backup or using a different card. Its warning says data on the eReader can be permanently lost if you proceed with the card-based steps. Keep a separate backup before flashing.
- Prepare the card and image. Follow the wiki’s instructions for accessing the internal microSD card and use the image that matches the board. The documented process uses balenaEtcher or the
ddcommand; carefully verify the target device before writing, since writing to the wrong disk can destroy data. - Flash only if you accept the consequences. Follow the project’s device-specific steps rather than improvising. A failed flash may leave the reader unusable, and the wiki cautions that physical damage is possible.
For detailed, device-specific instructions, use the official installation wiki. Do not proceed if you cannot identify the correct board, make a backup, or accept losing access to the reader.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is InkBox 2.0 still maintained?
Maintenance is uncertain. The InkBox 2.0 release notes said the project was being maintained mainly by two people and cautioned: “We cannot guarantee that development will continue if it becomes too much for us.” The Quill wiki lists extending support to the Kobo Clara HD as a development goal; a listed goal is not confirmation that support has shipped. Check current project pages for status before relying on ongoing updates.

Is InkBox 2.0 right for your eReader?
InkBox 2.0 is most relevant to technically confident owners of the listed older hardware who want its alternate reader environment and are comfortable with device-level installation. Before replacing a working setup, weigh the features against the practical limits:
Quick Recap
- Compatibility: only listed devices and exact board identifiers are established by the release and wiki.
- Features: the update adds library organization, reader controls, and experimental highlighting, alongside system and app changes.
- Installation: the process uses internal storage and carries data-loss and device-damage risks.
- Ongoing support: the project’s own release notes make no guarantee that development will continue.
