Take control of an inherited WordPress site in stages: confirm you’re authorized to manage it, document its current state, secure a restorable backup, review ownership and user access, then make changes and test the result. Don’t start by deleting accounts, plugins, themes, or files you don’t recognize; they may be needed for a site feature or recovery.
What should I check first when I take over a WordPress website?
First confirm that the person requesting the handover has authority over the site and its accounts. Agree on the scope: a WordPress login alone may not cover the hosting account, domain registration and DNS, email, analytics, payment integrations, CDN, or other connected services. The relevant contract, privacy duties, and retention requirements depend on the site and its circumstances, so check the actual agreements and applicable obligations with the owner.
Then establish a baseline before changing anything. In WordPress, open Tools → Site Health → Status to see issues grouped by severity. Open Tools → Site Health → Info for technical details such as the WordPress version, themes, plugins, server setup, database, and permissions. Info is diagnostic; it shows details but does not configure the site. WordPress Site Health screen documentation

How do I safely clean up an inherited WordPress site?
Make and understand a backup before maintenance
Before updating software or deleting anything, arrange a backup of both the site’s files and its database. Confirm what the backup includes, where it is stored, and how it can be restored. A backup you cannot locate or restore is not a dependable recovery plan. WordPress recommends backing up before updates and keeping copies both on the host and on a computer. A separate copy can reduce reliance on the hosting account; an external drive is one possible storage choice, not a backup process by itself. If the work includes migration, preserve the old database backup as well. Record the location of each copy and the restore instructions for the owner. WordPress moving documentation

Review accounts and ownership with the site owner
Confirm that an accountable owner can access WordPress administration, hosting, domain registration, backup storage, and essential third-party services before changing former developers’ access. In WordPress, review the user list and roles with the owner. Roles determine what users can do, including whether they can manage plugins, themes, and other users; don’t assume every administrator account is obsolete or safe to remove. WordPress roles and capabilities
Agree which former contractor accounts should be removed and which accounts remain necessary for support. Transfer or change credentials through the relevant service, then record who is responsible for each account. Keep secrets out of the handover document.
Handle signs of compromise as a security incident
Review Site Health for critical issues and look for unexplained administrator accounts, unexpected redirects or content, and other signs that the site may be compromised. If you suspect a hack, pause routine cleanup. Follow WordPress’s recovery guidance, secure access across the environment, create a backup, and work through recovery rather than treating the symptoms as cosmetic clutter. A general checklist cannot diagnose a particular site. WordPress guidance for hacked sites

Update in a controlled sequence
After securing a backup, review WordPress core, plugins, themes, PHP, and Site Health. Follow the site’s normal maintenance process, make updates in a controlled way, and check important pages and functions after each maintenance round. WordPress recommends keeping software current and having backup capability because an update can cause problems that require restoration. Its support documentation says only the latest major WordPress release is officially supported, so confirm the version and support status rather than assuming an older installation is covered. Cleanup can include spam and plugins, themes, or media that the owner confirms are no longer needed. Before removing an item, find out what it does and check for dependencies. For example, a theme may be a required parent theme, or a plugin may support a form, checkout, integration, or other workflow. If a file or media item is uncertain, retain it in a recoverable backup and investigate before deletion. WordPress housekeeping guidance supports cleanup, but no inactive item is automatically safe to remove from every customized site. WordPress cleanup guidance WordPress themes documentation

What should be included in a WordPress website handover?
Give the owner a concise, usable record of the site and its upkeep. Include:
- Site inventory: URL, purpose, WordPress version, theme, plugins, hosting, registrar, and important integrations
- Access and responsibility: which accounts the owner controls, who is responsible for each service, and how support access is handled
- Backup details: what is backed up, where copies are stored, and how to restore them
- Maintenance status: updates completed, remaining updates or checks, and known issues
- Operational notes: important workflows, renewal or maintenance dates if known, and contact or escalation details
Do not include passwords or secret keys. Store credentials using the owner’s approved secure method, and check the site’s actual agreements and obligations for any required records, privacy handling, or retention periods.
