Jochen Hanebeck’s leadership message is straightforward: build real capability, understand yourself, stay curious and do work you genuinely care about. Titles and executive polish may be visible, but his career suggests that credibility comes from accumulated substance. Hanebeck has been CEO of Infineon Technologies since 1 April 2022, after joining the Siemens/Infineon organization as a DRAM development engineer in 1994.
What “be authentic” means in Hanebeck’s advice
In the EE Times Silicon Grapevine video podcast published on 8 July 2025, Hanebeck’s advice is presented as a practical alternative to performing a leadership persona. Authenticity means knowing how you work, recognizing your strengths and limits, and acting consistently rather than copying the mannerisms of a famous executive.
That does not mean treating every instinct as correct. Hanebeck links authenticity with self-reflection: examine decisions, learn from outcomes and adjust your approach. A leader can change behavior without inventing a false identity.
The substance-over-style leadership lesson
“Substance matters” is the episode’s editorial framing. In career terms, substance is the technical, operational and judgmental competence that allows someone to make useful decisions when conditions are difficult. Style can help communicate that competence, but it cannot replace it.

Who is Jochen Hanebeck?
Infineon’s official biography identifies Hanebeck as chief executive officer and assigns him responsibility for group strategy, the divisions, legal and patents, corporate governance, human resources, communications, public policy, strategic funding, mergers and acquisitions, and chief technology officer duties.

How Hanebeck moved from DRAM engineering to CEO
His progression illustrates the accumulation of substance described in the interview: technical work came first, followed by increasingly broad responsibility across technology, operations, business units and the executive team.
| Year | Role or milestone |
|---|---|
| 1994 | Joined the Siemens joint venture in East Fishkill as a DRAM development engineer. |
| 1997 | Became head of DRAM technology development in Dresden. |
| 1999 | Moved into operations roles; this was also the period in which the organization became Infineon rather than Siemens. |
| 2003 | Led the Center of Excellence. |
| 2004 | Took on further operations responsibility. |
| 2007 | Became head of the microcontrollers business unit. |
| 2008 | Became president of Automotive. |
| 2016 | Joined the Management Board and became chief operating officer. |
| 1 April 2022 | Became CEO, succeeding Dr. Reinhard Ploss. |
Infineon’s succession announcement of 25 November 2021 said his CEO contract was scheduled to run until 31 March 2027. That contractual date is not a prediction about later leadership changes.

Career advice for engineers and other early-career professionals
Build capability before chasing titles
Choose assignments that deepen your understanding of systems, customers, products or operations. A promotion is more durable when it follows evidence that you can handle greater scope.
Use self-reflection as a working habit
After a project or decision, ask what you knew, what you missed, how others experienced your approach and what you would change. Record the lesson while the details are still clear.
Stay curious outside your immediate specialty
Technical depth remains important, but broader responsibility requires learning how adjacent functions make decisions. Curiosity helps an engineer connect design choices with manufacturing, cost, customers, regulation and strategy.
Enjoy the work you are doing
Interest is not a substitute for discipline. It is an energy source that makes sustained learning and difficult problem-solving more likely. If a role repeatedly leaves no room for meaningful learning or engagement, reassess the role, team or direction.

Let progression be an outcome, not the only objective
Hanebeck’s example does not describe a shortcut from engineering to the top job. It shows a sequence of expanded responsibilities. The practical lesson is to make the next assignment a place where you can add genuine competence and judgment.

The indexed EE Times page is a summary of the video podcast with an embedded video, not a full searchable transcript. It supports the themes of authenticity, self-reflection, substance, competence, curiosity and enjoyment of one’s work, as well as the career context presented above. It does not publish a named statistic or a complete set of verbatim answers.
Accordingly, the phrase “Be Authentic; Substance Matters” should be treated as the episode’s title and editorial framing. Any exact quotation attributed to Hanebeck should be checked against the video recording and accompanied by its timestamp; the summary alone is not enough to establish his precise wording.
Quick Recap
How to apply the lesson in a real career
- Define your substance. List the technical, operational or customer problems you can solve and the evidence for each.
- Request a wider assignment. Seek responsibility that connects your specialty to an adjacent function, product or business decision.
- Schedule reflection. After major decisions, write down assumptions, results and one specific improvement.
- Protect curiosity. Set aside regular time to learn beyond the tools or domain you currently use.
- Check for genuine interest. Identify which parts of the work sustain your effort and discuss ways to increase them.
- Measure progress by capability. Track problems solved, decisions improved and scope handled—not only title changes.
