India’s peak electricity demand in fiscal year 2024–25 reached 249,856 megawatts (MW), exceeding the Central Electricity Authority’s (CEA) earlier projection of 244,565 MW by 5,291 MW, or about 2.2%. The higher-than-forecast peak is consistent with a growing economy and expanding electricity needs, but it is not proof of economic growth on its own: heat and cooling demand also played a major role.

How far did India’s peak demand exceed the forecast?

The CEA’s 20th Electric Power Survey, published in November 2022, projected a peak of 244,565 MW for FY 2024–25. The CEA’s later Growth Book 2025 records an actual peak of 249,856 MW. That is a difference of 5,291 MW, approximately 2.2% above the forecast. The percentage is calculated from the two CEA figures; it is not a separately published CEA statistic. This is a comparison of peak demand with peak demand for the same fiscal year. It does not compare annual electricity use or indicate how much electricity India consumed across the whole year.

Why did electricity demand grow?

Electricity demand reflects more than economic output. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that India’s electricity demand grew 5.8% year on year in 2024 amid strong economic activity and electrification. It also found that consumption rose 8.5% in the first half of 2024, with intense, prolonged heatwaves driving a large part of that increase as households and businesses needed more cooling. Milder weather moderated demand in the second half. IEA, Electricity 2025: Demand

Those influences help explain why demand can beat a forecast without the overshoot mapping directly to GDP growth. Economic activity and electrification can raise underlying electricity needs, while unusually hot weather can sharply increase peak loads and short-term consumption.

Peak demand is not the same as annual electricity use

Peak demand is the highest load on the electricity system at a point in time; it is generally reported in megawatts or gigawatts. Annual energy requirement or consumption measures electricity across a period and is reported in units such as million units (MU) or billion units (BU). CEA tables treat these as separate measures, so their forecasts and actuals should not be interchanged.

Did India meet the demand?

The Ministry of Power said India met an all-time maximum demand of about 250 gigawatts (GW) in FY 2024–25. It also reported that energy supplied was broadly commensurate with energy requirement, with a marginal national gap generally linked to state transmission or distribution constraints. That official national-level account does not establish that every region or customer had uninterrupted electricity service. What the CEA projects for FY 2031–32

The CEA’s 20th Electric Power Survey projects peak demand of 366.4 GW and an annual electrical energy requirement of 2,473.8 BU for FY 2031–32. These are planning projections, not measured outcomes. The distinction between peak load and annual energy requirement remains important when reading either long-term figure. CEA 20th Electric Power Survey projection
