India beat Pakistan 4–3 in the men’s Asian Games semi-final in Kakamigahara on October 1, 2026, with Abhishek scoring the winner in the final minute. The narrow result briefly restored the tension of a rivalry whose recent meetings, according to a period tally cited by Hindustan Times, had often been one-sided.
India edged Pakistan 4–3 in the Asian Games semi-final
The match was tied 3–3 before Abhishek’s late goal settled the semi-final. The International Hockey Federation confirmed the score and last-minute winner in its October 3 tournament report: FIH tournament report. That is the result; the claim that the contest revived the rivalry’s old intensity is an interpretation built around the match and former players’ recollections.
What the recent record says—and does not say
Hindustan Times reported that India had not lost to Pakistan in a decade, and had won 19 of 22 meetings since the 2016 South Asian Games final, with two draws and one no-result. That is a record for the period identified by the newspaper, not an all-time head-to-head tally.
The FIH’s current head-to-head display lists 33 previous matches, nine draws, 15 Pakistan wins and a 49% India win share. The federation cautions that it is still digitising data from 2012 and earlier, so its displayed figures may omit matches and should not be treated as a definitive historical series: FIH men’s match records.

The 1975 final remains a defining chapter
India defeated Pakistan 2–1 in the men’s World Cup final on March 15, 1975, according to the FIH’s match record: 1975 World Cup final record. That final supplies a vivid contrast with the recent run of results, but one close semi-final cannot by itself establish that the teams’ longer-term fortunes have changed.
Former players remember fierce matches and friendships beyond them
The feature’s emotional core is the contrast between fierce competition on the pitch and personal warmth away from it. These are recollections reported by Hindustan Times, not a claim that every player or era shared the same experience.

Islahuddin Siddiqui, former Pakistan captain and two-time World Cup winner, recalled India’s Ashok Kumar singing before the 1975 final: “That just showed how confident the two teams were back then,” and “There was mutual respect between the players too.”

The same article quoted former India captain Sardar Singh on the mental pressure of these fixtures: “Ninety per cent of the matches were won by teams which were mentally stronger.”

Hindustan Times attributes the widening gap in recent national-team results in part to stronger investment in Indian hockey infrastructure and coaching, while Pakistan’s programme struggled. Shahbaz Ahmed, a former Pakistan player, described the situation in an interview the article says took place the previous year: “Hockey culture has just suddenly died in Pakistan.” These are the feature’s analysis and reported perspectives; the 4–3 semi-final is a dramatic contest, not proof that either programme’s trajectory has shifted.
