OBS Studio is the best free computer software to start with: it is open-source, has no watermark or usage limits, and can send a prerecorded video to YouTube as a live encoder feed. It does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 streaming: your computer and internet connection must stay available. If you want the stream to run without keeping a computer on at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative; it plays uploaded videos to YouTube.

Why OBS Studio is the free-software recommendation

The OBS Project says OBS is open-source software distributed under GPLv2 and can be used for any purpose. Its Help Portal states: “OBS has no watermarks or other limitations and can be used commercially with no restrictions.” Read the OBS Project Help Portal.

YouTube supports encoder-based live streaming, including software running on a computer. In this setup, OBS sends the prerecorded video as a live broadcast; this is different from uploading a video normally to YouTube. OBS itself does not provide cloud hosting or guarantee that a broadcast will remain online if the computer, power, or connection fails.

What you need before setting up OBS

  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, and YouTube states that users must be at least 16 to live stream. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • A computer that can run OBS continuously and a stable internet connection. The cited YouTube and OBS guidance does not establish a particular minimum computer specification.
  • The prerecorded video file you have the rights to stream, including its audio.
  • Your YouTube stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room. Treat the key as private account access information: anyone who gets it may be able to send a stream to your channel.

Set up a prerecorded YouTube live stream in OBS

  1. Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, complete any channel verification or live-stream activation steps shown for your account. Allow up to 24 hours if you are enabling live streaming for the first time.
  2. Create or select a stream. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create a stream or choose the one you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder guide explains where to find the stream URL and stream key: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  3. Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Select YouTube as the service, then enter or connect the stream key as prompted. Keep the key private; do not paste it into public chats, screenshots, or documents.
  4. Add the prerecorded video as a source. In the OBS scene you plan to broadcast, add the video using an appropriate media source and select your file. Confirm the video and audio appear in the OBS preview before starting the stream. If you want a playlist or looping behavior, follow a current OBS guide for the version you have installed and test that behavior before relying on it; the OBS steps for a particular playlist setup are not established here.
  5. Check the YouTube preview and stream health. Start the encoder from OBS, then verify the incoming picture and sound in the Live Control Room before making the broadcast public. Monitor the OBS output and YouTube stream health while live rather than assuming that a successful connection means the full video is playing correctly.
  6. Plan for the broadcast length and recordings. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete replay matters, consider scheduling shorter sessions below 12 hours and keep a local recording. YouTube also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.

Copyright and YouTube rules for prerecorded streams

Only send video and audio for which you have the necessary rights, including music licenses. YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it; even licensed material may be interrupted if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and its livestream terms and conditions.

Keeping a local OBS stream running: costs and trade-offs

OBS software is free, but the do-it-yourself approach relies on your own continuously running computer and connection. If you already have suitable hardware, that may avoid an encoder-software subscription. If not, factor in the cost of a computer for running OBS continuously and the practical risk of power or internet interruptions. No minimum PC specification or India-specific bandwidth, electricity, or legal requirement is established by the cited platform and OBS materials.

YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality during a broadcast and checking that local archive files remain intact and grow as expected. Its computer live-streaming tips are useful when you need to spot a stalled source or recording problem. A local setup gives you direct control, but it cannot keep streaming if the machine or home connection becomes unavailable.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live; it does not stream from a camera. The basic process is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Because playback runs in the cloud, nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly access is $9.99 per month. The same product is included on every plan, with the billing length changing; UPI and cards are supported in India. See StreamNeo for details. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
