Short answer: Windows can restart on a schedule, but that alone cannot bring a YouTube stream back after a power cut. Recovery depends on three separate things: Windows restarting, your PC’s BIOS/UEFI powering it on when electricity returns, and your encoder reopening and reconnecting to YouTube. The settings and labels vary by computer, so test the complete setup before relying on it for a 24/7 stream.
What auto-restart can—and cannot—do
A planned Windows restart is useful for maintenance. It does not make a computer turn itself on after a power interruption: if the PC loses power, Windows cannot run a restart instruction while it is off. Whether the machine starts when power returns is controlled by device firmware, not by a Windows restart command.
An unexpected shutdown also does not prove there was a power cut. Microsoft lists interruption of power as one possible cause of a shutdown without a clean shutdown; hardware or software failures can also be responsible. Microsoft’s Event ID 41 guidance explains this distinction.
Plan the recovery chain
- Windows restart: Decide whether you need a planned restart for maintenance or recovery after a crash. Windows has a built-in
shutdowncommand with restart options. Review Microsoft’s shutdown command reference for the supported options. A forced shutdown can close applications and lose unsaved work, so do not schedule one without accounting for that risk. - Power restoration: Check your PC or motherboard manufacturer’s instructions for a firmware setting that controls what happens after AC power returns. Its name and availability differ across models; do not assume a Windows setting controls it.
- Encoder reconnect: Configure your encoder and Windows sign-in/startup behavior so the encoder can run again after a restart. Then verify that it reconnects to YouTube rather than merely opening on the desktop.
- Internet and YouTube: The PC must have working internet, and the stream must be healthy in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Restarting the computer cannot restore an unavailable internet connection.
Configure and test the YouTube encoder
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key. Enter those in the encoder’s streaming settings, then start the encoder. The precise controls depend on the encoder you use; YouTube documents stream settings, including auto-start and auto-stop options, in its stream settings help.

High-speed wireless connection technology, reliable and efficient transmission speed, providing a faster internet experience for browsing and streaming
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in screenshots or share it. Reset it if it may have been exposed.
- After setting up Windows restart and sign-in behavior, reboot and check that the intended Windows account and session are available and the encoder launches.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the preview and stream health. Check both audio and video, then confirm the public-facing stream behaves as intended.
- Test with your actual network and leave upload-bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends reliable connectivity and sufficient upload bandwidth; restarting the PC does not fix a network outage.
YouTube’s streaming tips cover testing and monitoring. A successful test is evidence about the setup at that time, not a guarantee that every future restart or outage will recover automatically.
Plan for power interruptions carefully
If brief interruptions are a concern in your location, a UPS may provide a bridge for the PC and networking equipment. Choose capacity for the equipment actually connected and the runtime you need. A UPS cannot fix a Windows crash, encoder failure, internet outage, or a blackout that outlasts its backup. No particular model or runtime is established here.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the encoder stops sending content. That is not a promise that an indefinitely running 24/7 stream will produce one complete archive. If a complete recording matters, check YouTube’s current live help and plan how you will handle the stream’s duration and archive requirements before going live: YouTube encoder setup and help.
