Yes—you can use a second-hand laptop to send prerecorded video to YouTube as a live stream, provided that the particular laptop, encoder, power supply, and internet connection can sustain the workload. YouTube does not publish a minimum laptop specification for this setup, so test the machine rather than assume any used laptop will work. The biggest planning issue is separate from uptime: YouTube warns that a stream lasting more than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel that is verified, has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and meets YouTube’s current minimum age requirement for livestreaming. YouTube’s current help guidance sets that age at 16. See Get started with live streaming.
  • A second-hand laptop that can run encoder software reliably with your chosen video and settings. YouTube’s setup guidance does not specify a minimum CPU, memory, graphics, storage, or laptop model.
  • An encoder application, your prerecorded video or playlist, and a stable power and internet connection.
  • Access to the channel’s YouTube Live settings so you can copy its stream server URL and stream key.

A machine that handles ordinary browsing is not automatically suitable for uninterrupted encoding. Check the specific device under the conditions you plan to use, including heat, power, network stability, and the video’s resolution. No universal 24/7 reliability guarantee follows from the fact that a laptop can start a stream.

Set up the laptop and start the stream

  1. Confirm livestream access. Sign in to the intended channel and check that livestreaming is enabled. If the channel is newly enabled, YouTube may require an activation wait; follow the status shown in YouTube Studio.
  2. Prepare the laptop. Connect its charger, place it where its vents are unobstructed, and prevent sleep or hibernation from interrupting the session using the operating system’s power settings. Test the internet connection and run the encoder with the actual video before relying on it.
  3. Create or open the live stream in YouTube Studio. Choose the encoder workflow and copy the Live server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to the channel.
  4. Configure the encoder. Select the prerecorded video or playlist as the source, enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder’s streaming settings, and use settings the laptop and connection can sustain. YouTube’s cited setup pages do not prescribe a universal bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval for every computer and stream, so use the current recommendations displayed by YouTube for your stream and check the encoder’s output and YouTube preview rather than guessing.
  5. Check the preview before going live. Confirm that the intended video and audio are present, that playback is not stuttering, and that the YouTube preview receives the encoder signal. Start the broadcast from the control shown in YouTube Studio when the preview is ready.
  6. Monitor the session. Check video, audio, encoder status, laptop temperature, power, and network during a test run. YouTube recommends checking the stream and keeping a local archive where needed; a successful start does not establish that this laptop or connection will stay online indefinitely. See YouTube live streaming tips and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Plan for recordings separately from continuous uptime

A 24/7 broadcast and an archived video are different outcomes. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be archived automatically, but if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. For a long-running channel, preserve the original video files and consider how to keep local copies of sessions; do not rely on one continuous stream to produce a complete YouTube archive. See Archive live streams.

Shorter sessions can reduce the risk associated with a single stream exceeding 12 hours, but YouTube’s guidance does not establish a particular restart schedule or guarantee that every session will be archived. If uninterrupted viewing matters, plan for the possibility that restarting a stream briefly interrupts playback.

Set the audience accurately for children’s content

If the videos are directed to children, mark the content Made for Kids in the applicable YouTube Studio audience setting. YouTube says creators—not automated systems alone—are responsible for choosing the appropriate audience designation. Do not select “not made for kids” merely to retain features. Guidance: Set your channel or video’s audience.

Made for Kids livestreams have feature and advertising restrictions. YouTube says live chat and Super Chat are unavailable, personalized ads are disabled, and contextual ads may appear. The exact feature restrictions are described in Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming and YouTube’s Made for Kids feature guidance.

Copyright and monetization are separate checks

Use content you have the right to stream

Before putting a video or playlist on air, make sure you have the rights needed for both the audiovisual material and any music. A prerecorded format does not remove copyright obligations. YouTube may restrict a live stream, and a channel can face claims or other consequences if its content is not authorized. Check YouTube’s current policies and rights information before broadcasting; a 24/7 schedule is not permission to rebroadcast material.

Continuous streaming does not guarantee YPP approval or earnings

YouTube’s current Partner Program overview lists the full ad-revenue threshold as 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 valid public long-form watch hours in the previous 365 days or 10 million valid public Shorts views in the previous 90 days. Meeting a threshold is not acceptance: eligibility also depends on applicable policies, account standing, eligible location, and channel review. See YouTube Partner Program overview & eligibility.

YouTube’s monetization policies require original, authentic work and say content should not be mass-produced, generic, repetitive, or manipulative. Reviewers may consider the channel as a whole, including its theme, videos, metadata, and About section. Replaying a video continuously is not a monetization shortcut and does not ensure approval. See YouTube channel monetization policies.

Second-hand laptop troubleshooting

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
YouTube Studio does not receive a signal Encoder destination or stream key Confirm that the encoder uses the server URL and current stream key shown for the intended stream. If needed, refresh or replace the key in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
Video freezes, drops frames, or the laptop becomes unusually hot Device load, ventilation, or connection stability Run a test with the intended source, check that vents are clear, and reduce the workload or output settings if the laptop cannot sustain them. The official guidance does not provide a minimum hardware specification that can diagnose every used machine.
Audio is missing or mismatched Source or encoder audio selection Check the source file’s audio, the encoder’s selected audio input/output, and the YouTube preview before starting the broadcast.
The stream stops when the laptop is unattended Power, sleep settings, operating system, or internet interruption Keep the laptop on reliable power, configure sleep settings for continuous operation, and test the local connection. A consumer laptop and home connection do not provide a guaranteed always-on service.
A long stream is missing from channel archives Session exceeded YouTube’s archive guidance Keep a local copy and plan around YouTube’s warning that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is an alternative if you want prerecorded video to keep running on YouTube without leaving a home laptop on: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera. You do not need a computer or home internet connection to stay on, it supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
