If your ISP connection drops while you’re streaming a prerecorded video to YouTube Live, restore internet access, check that the encoder and video are still working, then resume or restart the encoder’s output using the configured YouTube stream URL and key. Watch the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. Whether the same event remains active—and whether playback resumes at the interrupted point—depends on the encoder; YouTube does not guarantee either.
Recover the stream after the connection returns
- Verify internet access from the encoder device. Make sure the computer running the encoder can reach the internet. If the encoder appears healthy but YouTube is not receiving the stream, YouTube advises testing the outbound connection. If the connection is still impaired, contact your ISP; there is no India-wide restoration timeline established by YouTube’s guidance. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers encoder and connection checks.
- Check the encoder and prerecorded video. Confirm the correct file is selected, inspect whether playback is paused, stopped, or still progressing, and look for local audio, video, or software errors. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output and its error or health information. The specific controls depend on your encoder.
- Confirm the YouTube ingest settings. The encoder sends video to the YouTube stream URL with the stream key configured in the encoder. Reuse the existing settings when appropriate: YouTube says a reused stream can carry forward metadata, settings, and its key. Do not reset or replace the key without a reason, such as suspected compromise or a start error. YouTube’s streaming setup instructions explain stream URLs and keys.
- Start sending from the encoder again. Use its resume or start control as appropriate, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Button names and restart behavior vary by encoder, so consult its documentation if you cannot identify the right control.
- Check whether the YouTube event is still live. If the event has ended, do not assume the old event can resume. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check the Live tab in YouTube Studio and create or start another event if needed. YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance describes this behavior.
A successful reconnection does not necessarily mean seamless continuation. The encoder may restart the file, continue from a different position, or require a new event. Check the actual preview and event state instead of assuming that YouTube has restored the same session or interrupted frame.
What determines whether playback resumes at the right point?
The encoder controls the prerecorded file’s playback, while YouTube receives the outgoing stream from that encoder. YouTube’s general guidance does not promise that every encoder preserves a file’s position through an internet outage. The exact result depends on the encoder’s software, version, playback state, and whether the original YouTube event remains active.
After reconnecting, compare the video shown in the preview with the point at which the interruption occurred. If the file restarted or the event ended, decide whether to continue with the current event or start a new one; avoid presenting a restart as an exact resume.

Prepare a backup path before the next stream
YouTube recommends testing encoder failover before an event. Its example is to stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable and confirm that playback moves to the backup encoder. This is a test procedure, not evidence that a backup encoder or alternate internet connection is already configured.
- Identify the backup encoder, if you have one, and confirm that it can send the correct video to the intended YouTube event.
- Test the transition by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then verify that the backup actually takes over.
- Check the YouTube preview and stream health during the test, and confirm what happens to prerecorded playback position.
- Keep in mind that an Ethernet cable is useful here only as part of a failover test; it cannot repair an ISP outage or guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
Settings and monitoring that help diagnose problems
Set encoder quality to match a connection that can reliably sustain the stream, test upload bitrate before going live, and monitor stream health during the event. YouTube’s current recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the relevant row in its encoder settings and bitrate table rather than treating one bitrate or upload-speed figure as universal.

- Keyframe interval: YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Health checks: monitor the preview and stream health in Live Control Room, and distinguish an encoder error from an outbound network problem.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which is RTMP over TLS/SSL, for a more secure connection. It does not prevent ISP failures or make reconnection automatic. HLS is another ingest option for compatible encoders, but YouTube says its segmented delivery has higher latency than RTMP; the cited guidance does not establish that HLS is more resilient to ISP interruptions.
