To restart a 24/7 YouTube stream after a power cut, protect both the streaming computer and the modem/router with backup power, configure YouTube’s stream settings and the encoder separately, and test a full power-loss recovery. A UPS or inverter can bridge a local outage, but it cannot keep your ISP connection working if the network itself is down.

What has to recover after a power cut

A stream can fail at several points, so restarting the computer alone is not enough. The computer or encoder must receive power and boot, the modem and router must reconnect, OBS or another encoder must start and connect to YouTube, and YouTube must permit the encoder to start the scheduled stream.

  • Local power: A UPS or inverter can supply the devices connected to it during a power interruption. Backing up only the PC leaves the network equipment exposed.
  • Internet access: Your ISP connection and its upstream network are separate from your home power supply. Local backup power does not guarantee that internet service remains available.
  • Encoder startup: The encoder needs to launch after the computer boots and attempt to connect to the saved YouTube stream.
  • YouTube stream settings: Auto-start is separate from the encoder’s startup configuration.

For an India-specific discussion of backup power and internet dependence, see How to Keep a 24/7 YouTube Stream Running During Power Cuts in India.

Set up recovery in order

1. List the equipment the stream depends on

Include the streaming PC or hardware encoder, modem, router, and any required network switch or camera power supply. If a device is necessary for the stream or connection, account for it in the backup-power plan.

2. Back up local power for the complete path

Use a UPS or inverter sized for the measured load and the length of outage you want to bridge. Add up the actual power draw of the equipment you intend to keep running, then test the setup under that load. Runtime depends on the equipment and battery system; there is no single runtime that can be promised for every streaming setup.

A UPS or inverter addresses local power, not an ISP outage. If the stream must survive failure of your normal internet access, consider a separately routed backup connection and verify that your encoder can use it. The available India-specific information does not establish a particular provider or plan.

3. Configure the YouTube stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or reuse the scheduled live stream.
  2. In the stream settings, enable Auto-start if you want the encoder to be able to start the stream. YouTube explains that with the relevant settings enabled, “you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” See Manage live stream settings.
  3. Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into your encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover this workflow and note that streaming can use software or a standalone hardware encoder.
  4. Keep the stream key private: treat it like a password. Do not expose it in screenshots, logs, or public scripts.
  5. Choose Auto-stop deliberately. Check what stopping the stream does in your setup and avoid an unintended scheduled end if you intend to run continuously.

First-time live streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube. That applies to initial setup, not to recovery after each power cut.

4. Make the computer and encoder start automatically

For OBS on Windows, configure OBS to launch when Windows starts and arrange for it to start streaming. An OBS Project forum response suggests adding --startstreaming to the Windows shortcut and launching it through the Startup folder or Task Scheduler. This is community advice, not a guarantee for every current OBS and Windows configuration; see the OBS forum discussion.

A startup task that waits for connectivity or retries after a delay may help when the router and modem take longer to come online than the PC. Validate any delay or retry approach on your own Windows, OBS, router, and YouTube setup. OBS automatic reconnect is not a substitute for testing whether OBS can make its first connection after a cold reboot.

5. Test the entire recovery chain

  1. Schedule a controlled test, and make sure you can safely interrupt the equipment.
  2. Remove local power to the streaming PC or encoder and the network equipment, then restore it.
  3. Wait for the modem/router and internet connection to come back. Check that OBS or the encoder has launched and attempted to connect.
  4. In YouTube Live Control Room, check the preview and stream health; then check the public watch page.
  5. Run a separate test for an internet interruption without powering off the computer. A network failure and a cold reboot are different recovery cases.

YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This is an archive detail, not a guarantee that a longer stream will remain uninterrupted or be archived in full.

What backup approach covers which failure?

Approach What it can address What it does not establish
UPS or inverter for the PC and network equipment Local power interruption, for as long as the backup system can support the measured load Continued ISP service or a fixed runtime without sizing and testing
Automatic computer and encoder startup Restarting the streaming software after the computer boots That the network will be ready at first launch or that YouTube will accept the connection without testing
YouTube Auto-start Allows the encoder to start the configured stream when the setting is enabled Powering equipment, restoring the internet, or launching the encoder
Separately routed backup internet May provide another access path if the normal connection fails A specific India provider, plan, or successful failover for your encoder; confirm these for your setup
Cloud playback for prerecorded video Can keep uploaded prerecorded content streaming without relying on a home PC being powered on Replacing a live camera feed or ensuring your home ISP is restored

Or let it run in the cloud

If your kids’ 24/7 stream uses prerecorded videos rather than a live camera, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the stream running from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also offers automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
