If a power cut stops your 24/7 children’s livestream, restore the equipment and internet connection first, reconnect the encoder to the intended YouTube event, then check Live Control Room and confirm playback from another device. A UPS may bridge a short outage only if it powers the encoder and the network equipment it needs for long enough; it cannot guarantee that your ISP or YouTube’s event remains available.
Restore the stream in this order
These steps apply to an OBS-to-YouTube setup. If you use another encoder or platform, follow its equivalent connection and event checks; exact menus and post-outage behavior vary by setup.
- Find the failure point. Determine whether the outage exhausted the UPS, shut down the computer or encoder, interrupted the modem/router/ONT, disrupted the ISP link, or left the YouTube event ended or otherwise unavailable.
- Restore power to the required devices. Check the UPS status and whether the computer and network devices were connected to battery-backed outlets. Do not assume the battery lasted for the whole outage; runtime depends on the connected load and battery condition.
- Wait for internet access. Start the router, modem or ONT as needed and wait for the ISP connection to return. A powered router does not prove that the ISP link is working.
- Start the computer and encoder. Open OBS or your encoder, inspect its status and logs, and reconnect it to the intended YouTube event. Keep the stream key private; do not post or send it to people who do not need it.
- Check YouTube’s event state. If using YouTube, open Live Control Room and inspect the event and stream-health messages. If the broadcast ended, use YouTube Studio to restart or create an event as appropriate to the event state; do not assume a full power cycle will resume the same event automatically.
- Verify what viewers see. Check public playback from a separate device, preferably using another network. Seeing OBS report a connection is not by itself proof that the public stream is playing correctly.
YouTube recommends selecting encoder settings for the actual internet connection, testing with representative audio and motion, and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. Its encoder settings guidance gives bitrate ranges by codec and resolution; there is no single bitrate that fits every stream.

Not necessarily. After a complete loss of power, OBS cannot transmit until the computer and network are back, and the YouTube event may no longer be in a state that accepts the reconnect. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and remote ingest server, typically outside OBS’s control. That does not establish what state a particular YouTube event will be in after a full shutdown.

If the encoder is connected but the stream is unstable, change one thing at a time and note the original setting before changing it. OBS recommends practical network checks such as using wired Ethernet, checking bitrate against stable upload capacity, inspecting router/modem/cables, and contacting the ISP if the fault is beyond the home network.
Will a UPS keep the livestream running?
It can bridge an outage only when the UPS has sufficient capacity and runtime for every essential local device. For a typical computer-encoded stream, that may include the computer plus the modem, router, and ONT or other network equipment. If any essential device loses power, the stream can still disconnect.

- Check the UPS’s actual load, battery condition, and manufacturer runtime information rather than estimating from the outage duration alone.
- Connect essential equipment to battery-backed outlets, not outlets that provide surge protection only.
- Remember that a UPS does not keep the ISP network or YouTube ingest online and cannot guarantee that the event will accept reconnection.
No exact UPS capacity or runtime can be specified without the equipment load and the outage duration you need to cover. A replacement modem, router, or cable is relevant only if troubleshooting identifies that component as faulty.

Choose a recovery setup for the kind of stream

Decide based on whether the content is genuinely live or prerecorded, the outage duration to cover, equipment load, ISP behavior, event reconnection needs, child-safety responsibilities, and acceptable cost and complexity.

Protect children and set the YouTube audience accurately
If a child under 16 participates in a livestream from an adult-owned account, YouTube Help says: “If you are under 16 and would like to participate in a live stream from an account owned by an adult, that adult must be visibly present in the live stream.” YouTube also advises keeping personal and location details private, ensuring an adult is nearby or aware, and moderating chat. Set the audience in YouTube Studio according to the content, not simply whether a child appears on camera. YouTube requires creators to set an audience, and says Made for Kids content has features such as live chat, comments, notifications, and personalized advertising turned off or restricted. What India’s electricity figures do—and do not—say
India’s Ministry of Power said in a 23 March 2026 PIB release that the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020 provide for 24×7 supply by distribution licensees, while allowing commissions to specify fewer hours for some categories; states and distribution utilities are responsible for supply and distribution. The rule is not a promise that an individual home will never face an interruption. The same release reported national availability in FY 2025 of 22.6 hours per day in rural areas and 23.6 hours per day in urban areas—figures that are not a prediction for a particular home or state. Prevent the next outage from becoming a long interruption
- List every device required for the stream, including network equipment, and confirm which ones have battery backup.
- Review the UPS load and battery condition against the runtime you actually need; avoid treating a manufacturer estimate as a guarantee for your particular setup.
- Rehearse a controlled power and network interruption, then verify the whole chain: power restoration, ISP connectivity, encoder reconnection, event state, stream health, and public playback. This is a recommended check, not a guarantee of future recovery.
- Keep a recovery note with the intended event, encoder settings, and where to check YouTube stream health. Store the stream key securely rather than in a publicly accessible note.
