OBS Studio is the best-supported free desktop choice for looping children’s videos in a YouTube livestream. For a single file, add an OBS Media Source and turn on Loop. For multiple files, use OBS’s VLC Video source, install VLC, and enable Loop Playlist. OBS repeats the video on your computer and sends it to YouTube as a live broadcast; looping playback on a viewer’s YouTube page does not create a livestream.
Which free software should you use?
Use OBS Studio if you want to stream a local video file or playlist without paying for broadcasting software. YouTube’s encoder directory lists Open Broadcaster Software as open-source and available at no charge. OBS has two relevant workflows, depending on whether you are repeating one file or rotating through several.

These controls are documented by the OBS Project Media Sources guide. For one long video, the Media Source is simpler. Choose VLC Video when you want several clips to play in sequence.

- Install OBS Studio. Download it from the official OBS Project site.
- Prepare a scene. In OBS, select or create a scene, then use the Sources panel’s add control and choose Media Source.
- Select the file. In the source properties, choose the local video file. OBS documents MP4 and several other supported formats; if your file does not play, try a supported format.
- Enable looping. Check Loop in the Media Source properties, then confirm. The file should restart when it reaches the end.
- Check the scene before going live. Confirm the video appears in the preview and that its audio is at an appropriate level. Play it through a full cycle if practical, so you can catch an unexpected pause or missing audio before a longer broadcast.
Loop a playlist of children’s videos
- Install VLC as well as OBS. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. Match the VLC bitness to OBS; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Add the source. In the OBS scene’s Sources panel, add VLC Video. If that source is unavailable, check that VLC is installed and that its bitness matches OBS.
- Load the playlist. Add the video files in the order you want them to play. Leave Shuffle off if the order matters.
- Repeat the list. Enable Loop Playlist. The playlist should restart after its final item.
- Preview the sequence. Check that each clip plays, that transitions between files behave as expected, and that audio is audible and balanced.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
OBS handles playback and encoding on your computer, but YouTube must receive the broadcast through an encoder stream. If you have never streamed live before, enable live streaming in YouTube Studio first: YouTube says initial activation may take up to 24 hours.

- Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. Follow YouTube’s encoder livestream setup. Allow for the possible first-time activation delay before scheduling a broadcast.
- Create or open an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio’s live-stream workflow, use the encoder option to access the stream details. YouTube provides the stream key and server information there.
- Enter the stream details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings and then Stream, choose YouTube if offered, and connect using the stream key or account workflow shown in the current YouTube and OBS interfaces. Treat the stream key as a password: do not share it or show it on screen.
- Start the broadcast from OBS. Confirm the correct scene is selected, then start streaming in OBS. Check YouTube Studio’s live control room to confirm the incoming stream and complete any on-screen go-live step required there.
Test the video and audio before announcing a long stream. The software setup alone does not establish that a video is cleared for broadcast or that a channel qualifies for monetization.
Copyright and children’s-content settings matter
Clear every part of the video and audio
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can result in a warning or placeholder image; leaving matched material in the stream can lead to temporary interruption or termination. This applies to the animation, soundtrack, voice, sound effects, and any stock material, so check the rights for each element rather than assuming that permission for one covers the rest.

If you have a licence, YouTube says the content owner may still need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for the stream to avoid interruption. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and arrange any required clearance before broadcasting.

If the stream is made for children, mark it accordingly in YouTube’s audience settings. YouTube restricts or disables features on made-for-kids streams, including live chat and live chat replay; other effects can include limits on comments for archives and upcoming streams, reminder notifications, and personalized ads. Contextual ads may still appear. Do not mislabel the audience to retain features. See YouTube’s live-stream restriction guidance for current details.

A loop is not a monetization guarantee
Repeating a file solves playback, not monetization eligibility. YouTube’s monetization-policy page identifies repetitive or mass-produced material as an inauthentic-content concern; a loop by itself does not establish that a channel will or will not qualify. Check the current YouTube channel monetization policies before relying on revenue.
Troubleshooting OBS looping and YouTube Live
