For a budget-conscious Next.js SaaS, start with OpenTelemetry if portability matters, then choose a hosted backend based on the signals it collects, the retention you need, and how it meters usage. Axiom has the most directly documented Next.js integration in this comparison; Better Stack publishes straightforward logs-and-traces rates. Neither service can reconstruct an incident from logs alone: your app must emit useful, safe context, and production telemetry must be exported successfully.

What a logging service must provide for incident reconstruction

A useful production record should help answer five questions: when did the event happen, which environment and route were involved, what operation was running, what status or error resulted, and which request or trace identifier connects it to nearby events. If a database call or external API request was in progress, a span or structured event for that operation can make the timeline more actionable than a standalone error line.

Think of the system in three layers:

  • Instrumentation: the framework and your code create logs, metrics, and traces, with stable fields and identifiers.
  • Collection and export: an SDK, framework hook, platform drain, or collector moves that data out of the app.
  • Backend: the hosted service stores, queries, retains, and bills for the data.

Buying a hosted API does not automatically give every request a complete trace. Verify which signals are automatic and which require explicit logging, a hook, a platform feature, or custom spans. Before relying on production telemetry, confirm that export and asynchronous flush behavior work in your deployment runtime; local output does not prove production ingestion.

Use structured, safe context

Prefer structured fields such as environment, service, route template, operation, status code, and a request or trace ID over unstructured messages alone. Use stable identifiers that help correlate events without exposing personal information. Do not log secrets, authentication tokens, payment data, or full personal records. Minimize client-side token permissions; if a token should not be exposed in browser code, use a server-side proxy or keep that logging server-side.

Start with Next.js OpenTelemetry support

Next.js recommends OpenTelemetry as a platform-agnostic way to instrument applications and documents built-in framework instrumentation. Its guide explains that framework code can be represented by spans when instrumentation is enabled. This gives a small team a portable starting point before it commits to one vendor’s data model. See the Next.js OpenTelemetry guide.

Where instrumentation goes

The guide uses a register() function in instrumentation.ts. Put that file at the project root, or in the src directory beside app or pages. The documented quick start uses @vercel/otel; the guide also covers manual NodeSDK configuration. These are documentation paths, not a guarantee that every app or deployment has been tested.

Account for the runtime

Manual NodeSDK setup is not compatible with the Edge runtime. Next.js documents conditional loading for Node-based setup and recommends @vercel/otel when Edge support is required. Check the current guide against the actual routes and runtime configuration in your app rather than assuming one setup covers both Node and Edge. Export can be directed through Vercel or a self-hosted OpenTelemetry Collector; a collector adds operational work but can help keep instrumentation separate from the destination backend.

Hosted options: Axiom and Better Stack

Both vendors publish hosted logs-and-traces offerings, but their published allowances use different units and retention terms. Those figures are not a like-for-like workload price: estimate your own ingestion, query activity, and retention needs, then verify the provider’s current billing definitions.

Service Published pricing and allowance Next.js collection evidence Retention and cost considerations
Axiom Personal $0/month, permanent, no credit card; 500 GB/month data-loading compute, 10 GB-hours query compute, and 25 GB storage Axiom documents its Vercel app and @axiomhq/nextjs integration, plus the older next-axiom library; coverage differs by path. 30-day retention. The vendor uses “data-loading compute” terminology; do not treat it as raw log-byte ingestion without checking the billing definition.
Axiom Cloud $25/month plus usage; included allowance of 1 TB data-loading compute, 100 GB-hours query compute, and 100 GB storage The @axiomhq/nextjs library is the documented option for sending data without Vercel Drains. Excess usage is pay-as-you-go; the vendor says rates tier down as volume increases and spending limits and alerts can be configured.
Better Stack Logs & Traces Free allowance: 3 GB logs and 3 GB traces The reviewed pricing page establishes hosted logs and traces, but the sources here do not establish a dedicated Next.js SDK or integration. Free allowance retains logs and traces for 3 days. Published rates: $0.10/GB ingestion, $0.05/GB/month retention, standard querying included, and query boost at $0.001/GB scanned.

Axiom figures are from its pricing page as viewed on 2026-10-04; Better Stack figures are from its pricing page as viewed on 2026-10-04. These are vendor-published terms and may change. Check the Axiom pricing page and Better Stack pricing page before choosing. Allowance names, storage treatment, and billing units differ, so the table does not establish which provider will cost less for a particular app.

Which Axiom integration path fits a Next.js deployment?

Axiom documents three routes: its Vercel app, @axiomhq/nextjs, and next-axiom. The collection coverage is not identical.

Path Documented signals Important trade-off
Axiom Vercel app Application logs, Web Vitals, HTTP logs, tracing, and build logs Can be easier for an existing Vercel deployment, but depends on Vercel Drains, which are available only on paid plans.
@axiomhq/nextjs Application logs, Web Vitals, HTTP logs, and tracing Axiom recommends this library to send data without Vercel Drains; use the documented setup and verify the signals your app needs.
next-axiom Application logs Axiom says it is no longer under active development and will receive bug fixes but no new features.

The coverage and maintenance statements are from Axiom’s Next.js documentation, not an independent comparison of reliability or performance. The same page notes that Next.js 16 renamed middleware to proxy; older projects use middleware.ts and the middleware export. Check the current framework and vendor docs before copying examples.

Practical setup outline

  1. Choose whether the app will export through a Vercel app and paid Vercel Drains, or send data directly with @axiomhq/nextjs.
  2. Follow Axiom’s current installation instructions for @axiomhq/js, @axiomhq/logging, @axiomhq/nextjs, and, if using client logging, @axiomhq/react. Create a dataset and an ingest-capable token with only the permissions needed.
  3. Configure a server logger and wrap supported routes or route handlers using the documented withAxiom pattern. Add client logging with useLogger only where it is useful and safe.
  4. If required, add the documented Web Vitals helpers and request capture through the appropriate framework middleware or proxy. For Next.js 15 and later, Axiom documents request error capture through instrumentation.ts and onRequestError.
  5. Preserve the default formatter and report fields when adding custom fields; Axiom warns that changing their shape can affect dashboards and integrations.
  6. Deploy and verify that representative requests, errors, and related identifiers appear in the expected dataset. Check export and flush behavior in the actual runtime rather than inferring successful delivery from development output.

Axiom’s documentation describes the integration mechanisms; it does not establish that a specific application will ingest every event or meet a particular latency or reliability target.

How to choose for a small SaaS

Prefer portability when backend lock-in is the concern

Use Next.js’s OpenTelemetry path as the instrumentation baseline, then select an exporter or collector architecture for the hosted destination. This separates the app’s instrumentation from its storage and query vendor, though it does not eliminate provider-specific work or collector operations.

Prefer the most explicit Next.js path when setup time matters

Axiom is the clearest fit in the documented evidence when you want a Next.js-specific setup with server logging, request capture, error capture options, and tracing. Choose between its Vercel app and direct library according to whether paid Vercel Drains are acceptable. Avoid starting a new implementation on next-axiom if you need new features, given Axiom’s stated maintenance status.

Prefer a rate-based estimate when you can forecast usage

Better Stack publishes separate ingestion, retention, and query-boost rates, making those line items visible for estimation. Its three-day free retention may be too short if incidents are often discovered weeks later. The reviewed material does not establish a dedicated Next.js integration, so account for the instrumentation and export work you would need rather than assuming parity with Axiom.

Estimate a real monthly bill before committing

  • Estimate daily and monthly emitted volume, including bursts from errors or verbose debug logging.
  • Decide how long investigations may take and set a minimum retention target based on that response window.
  • Estimate query frequency and scanned data, not just ingestion.
  • Check whether your desired signals require an additional SDK, paid platform drain, or collector.
  • Review overage controls, usage alerts, and the provider’s definitions of storage, ingestion, and compute.

Do not infer a cheapest provider from the published free-tier labels: Axiom’s compute and storage allowances and Better Stack’s GB-based ingestion and retention terms are not directly equivalent.

What these sources do—and do not—establish

The vendor and framework documentation supports the setup and pricing details above. It does not establish independent uptime, query speed, ingestion completeness, support quality, security certifications, or total cost for your workload. No hands-on ingestion or reliability test is represented here. Treat the choice as a fit between documented capabilities, your deployment, and your own usage forecast—not as a performance ranking.
