Gesture control can demand less visual attention than reaching for a touchscreen, but it is not automatically safer: studies have found measurable driving-performance costs even when drivers like using gestures. The key is to make the system respond to the driver and the driving situation—not merely to whether a camera sees a hand movement.

Is gesture control safer than using a touchscreen while driving?

It can reduce the need to look at and touch a screen, but that advantage does not make every gesture safe to use on the road. In a 2023 study with 36 participants, touchscreen interaction produced the worst driving performance among the tested touch, speech, gesture, and baseline conditions. Gesture effects were smaller than touch’s, but gesture interaction still worsened reaction-related and vehicle-control measures compared with baseline.

That comparison is a useful warning against treating “hands-free” or “eyes-free” as synonyms for safe. A gesture may keep a hand away from the display yet still take time to recognize, require the driver to remember a command, or prompt a glance to check whether it worked. A driver might also move a hand away from the steering wheel to make the gesture.

Interaction or condition What the cited evidence establishes How to interpret it
Touchscreen In the 36-participant 2023 comparison, touchscreen interaction produced the worst driving performance of the tested touch, speech, gesture, and baseline conditions (Elsevier, 2023). Touch can impose visual and manual demands; the study does not establish that every screen interaction or vehicle has the same effect.
Mid-air gesture In that same comparison, gesture effects were smaller than touchscreen effects but still degraded reaction-related and vehicle-control measures versus baseline (Elsevier, 2023). Less visual demand than touch does not mean no driving cost.
Speech and physical controls The cited evidence indicates these can outperform gesture on some safety measures; it does not establish a universal ranking across systems or situations. Use the simplest control that lets the driver complete the task without diverting attention.
Baseline driving The 2023 comparison found gesture and touch degraded some driving measures versus baseline (Elsevier, 2023). For a safety comparison, include the driving task without an added interface task.

These are study findings, not a population crash-rate estimate. The available evidence does not establish that production gesture control reduces crashes.

Why does a car misunderstand hand gestures?

A gesture recognizer has to distinguish the intended command from a hand movement that merely looks similar. It must do this in a cabin where the driver’s position, speed of movement, visibility, and surrounding driving conditions can vary. A system calibrated around one person’s motion may misread another person’s version of the same gesture.

DFKI described the core challenge in 2023: “Despite significant advances in gesture recognition technology, recognizing gestures in a driving environment remains challenging due to limited and costly data and its dynamic, ever-changing nature.” Its personalized approach is designed to adapt to individual users to improve recognition while reducing user-specific data requirements.

Personalize the gesture model to the driver

Rather than assuming everyone makes an identical motion, a system can account for a driver’s gesture range, handedness, seating position, and execution speed. Personalization may make recognition more reliable without requiring the driver to imitate an idealized movement. It should not, however, turn every detected motion into a command: confidence in recognition is only one factor in deciding whether the car should act.

Keep the command vocabulary small and distinct

Start with a limited set of gestures that are easy to distinguish from ordinary movement, then test them across drivers and conditions. AutomotiveUI work identified pointing, crossed-arm warning poses, and waving as promising signals for direction and attention in simulated scenarios. That makes them candidates for further testing, not proven universal commands or a recommended production vocabulary.

Can in-car gesture control reduce distraction?

It can reduce one kind of demand—looking down to find and touch a control—while introducing other demands, such as making a deliberate movement, remembering the gesture, or checking for feedback. Whether distraction falls overall depends on the task, the driver, the interface, and the road context. A driver’s favorable impression is not a substitute for measuring performance.

The distinction matters because subjective appeal and objective driving outcomes answer different questions. In a 2024 simulator study, participants rated mid-air gestures as attractive, less demanding, and trustworthy. That positive evaluation does not cancel the performance costs reported in the separate 2023 comparison.

For interaction designers, the practical question is not simply “Do drivers like gestures?” It is whether they can use a particular gesture accurately, with little time away from the driving task, while maintaining vehicle control—and whether the system handles uncertainty safely.

What should a gesture system know before accepting a command?

A robust interface needs a behavior layer that combines driver, vehicle, and environment information. SAE’s 3D framework treats these as interacting sources of context because driving style changes with the driver’s state and the situation. In practice, that means a recognized hand motion should be checked against conditions that affect whether acting on it is appropriate.

Driver and interaction context

  • Who is making the gesture: adapt recognition to the individual’s movement pattern rather than relying on a single assumed range or speed.
  • Whether the driver appears available to interact: consider workload and steering activity, not just hand position.
  • Whether the command is unambiguous: if recognition is uncertain, avoid silently carrying out an unintended action.

Road and vehicle context

  • Driving conditions: use speed and the road situation to decide whether to accept a command, defer it, or reject it.
  • Current vehicle demands: account for steering activity and the driver’s workload before asking for an additional movement.
  • Automation state: distinguish ordinary manual driving from periods when the driver may need to resume control.

The point of context gating is not to make the car infer more than its sensors support. It is to avoid treating the same motion as equally appropriate at every speed, workload, and automation state.

How should the car confirm a gesture without pulling the driver’s eyes away?

Feedback should tell the driver whether a command was recognized without creating a new reason to look down. In a 2024 simulator study with 24 participants, drivers navigated 12 menu items using mid-air gestures. A head-up display (HUD) combined with auditory spearcons improved measured situation awareness, workload, navigation performance, and usability compared with a head-down display.

That result supports pairing visual information in the driver’s forward field with concise auditory cues rather than relying on a display below the line of sight. It does not establish that every HUD layout or audio signal will have the same effect in a production vehicle. Confirmation should be brief, easy to distinguish, and proportionate to the action; a low-confidence command should not produce feedback that implies success.

How should gesture systems be tested for safety?

Evaluation should pair driver feedback with measures of what happens to the driving task. Preference ratings can reveal whether an interface feels natural or trustworthy, but they cannot show on their own whether the driver reacted later or maintained vehicle control.

  • Workload and situation awareness: determine whether the interface competes with driving demands or helps the driver maintain an understanding of what is happening.
  • Recognition across users and conditions: test varied gesture styles and cabin situations rather than assuming one user’s results generalize.
  • Trust and learnability: assess whether drivers understand what the system will recognize and respond appropriately when it does not.

Testing should also include the relationship between secondary tasks and automation. In 2024, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration studied 100 commercial drivers in simulated Level 2 and Level 3 systems, examining secondary tasks, transfer of control, and training. That work underscores why gesture interactions should be evaluated during automation transitions as well as routine use: a driver occupied with another task may not be ready to respond when control must return.

What does current evidence not establish?

The cited gesture-specific experiments are simulator studies, including small participant groups. They help identify design risks and promising approaches, but they do not prove that every production system is safe or unsafe. The evidence summarized here also does not establish a production-wide crash reduction attributable to gesture control.

Real-world validation remains important across lighting, clothing, driver populations, injuries, left- and right-hand-drive layouts, and different cabin designs. Until that evidence exists for a specific system, treat simulator findings as design guidance rather than a guarantee of on-road performance.

NHTSA’s design principle is a useful standard for evaluating the interface: “Safe and efficient operation of any motor vehicle requires that the DVI be designed in a manner consistent with driver limitations, capabilities, and expectations.” For gesture control, that means designing around human behavior and driving context—not expecting drivers to adapt perfectly to a camera or command set.
