In-person visits require a trip to the facility; video visits may let you connect remotely, but can still require approval, advance booking, compatible technology, and payment. Neither option is guaranteed to be available, free, or easier. In the U.S., rules are set by the federal, state, or facility authority responsible for the person’s custody, so confirm the exact facility’s current policy before traveling or scheduling. USAGov explains that visiting options vary by state and locality.
How do in-person and video prison visits differ?
The main practical difference is where you meet: an in-person visit requires reaching the prison and passing its entry procedures, while a video visit may avoid the trip. Remote access does not remove facility rules, and it may bring separate scheduling, account, equipment, and fee requirements.
| What to compare | In-person visit | Video visit |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Check approval, the facility’s current schedule, visitor limits, and entry requirements. | Confirm that the specific facility offers remote visits and that you are eligible. Indiana notes that availability varies by facility. Indiana Department of Correction |
| Total cost | Include transportation and other trip expenses. The Bureau of Prisons says it does not reimburse visitor transportation. Bureau of Prisons visitor guidance | Check the specific service’s fee, billing unit, payment timing, and any credit or refund rules. Charges vary by system. |
| Scheduling | Facility rules determine visiting days, hours, duration, visitor limits, and whether advance booking is needed. | Check account approval, booking windows, time zone, visit length, and platform. Indiana recommends signing in 15 minutes before an at-home visit; Missouri requires scheduling at least 72 hours in advance. Indiana Department of Correction Missouri Department of Corrections |
| Preparation | Plan the trip and follow the facility’s identification, dress, screening, and belongings rules. | Use the required device and internet connection, and follow account, payment, dress, and conduct instructions. |
| Privacy and conduct | Follow the facility’s conduct and contact rules. | Do not assume the call is private. Missouri says its video visits are recorded and monitored. Missouri Department of Corrections |
These are not nationwide guarantees. Even facilities within one system can have different hours and restrictions. Rhode Island’s Department of Corrections puts it plainly: “Each facility’s schedule is different.” Rhode Island Department of Corrections
How much does a video visit cost?
There is no single U.S. price established by the cited state systems. Some visits may be free, while others charge by the minute or session; in-person visits can also bring travel costs. Treat the following as jurisdiction-specific examples, not national rates, and check the current facility and service terms before booking.

| System | Published cost information | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Missouri Department of Corrections | $6.90 per 30-minute session; unused time is credited at $0.23 per minute. | Effective July 1, 2026. If a session ends early, callers pay for minutes used; the unused-time credit is typically applied to the Securus account within 48 hours. Missouri Department of Corrections |
| Michigan Department of Corrections | $0.16 per minute, up to 20 minutes, with a $3.20 advance hold adjusted to the call length. | The video visit must be prepaid. The video page is dated May 15, 2025; confirm current billing before paying. Michigan Department of Corrections |
| Indiana Department of Correction | No single price is stated on the department overview. | Cost varies by facility, duration, and visit type; some visits may be free. Available prices are displayed during scheduling. Indiana Department of Correction |
Do not compare a per-session charge directly with a per-minute rate without accounting for visit length and billing rules. Check the amount shown for the specific appointment, when payment is collected, and what happens if the call ends early.
Do you need approval before visiting?
Often, yes. The approval process depends on the custody authority and facility. For federal prisons, the Bureau of Prisons recommends confirming the prison, obtaining approval, reading the visiting rules, and checking the schedule and route before leaving. If you are unsure whether approval has been granted, contact the facility. Bureau of Prisons visitor guidance
Some state systems also require an application or an approved visitor list before you can book. Remote visits may have their own eligibility and account steps; a video appointment is not necessarily available just because you can access a scheduling service.

What should you expect at an in-person prison visit?
Expect facility-specific entry and conduct requirements. Before traveling, check the institution’s own visiting policy and schedule rather than relying only on a general state page. The Bureau of Prisons directs visitors to confirm the location-specific regulations; Rhode Island likewise advises checking requirements and schedules before each visit. - Confirm the accepted identification and whether children or other visitors need additional paperwork.
- Review clothing rules, screening procedures, and the exact items permitted inside.
- Check the visit date, hours, length, visitor limits, and any advance-booking requirement.
- Plan your route and transportation. The Bureau of Prisons states: “Unfortunately, there is no Government payment or reimbursement for transportation.” Bureau of Prisons visitor guidance
Rules about belongings can be strict and differ by facility. For example, Rhode Island describes identification and screening requirements and permits only limited change in a clear bag; that is a local example, not a rule for every prison. Rhode Island Department of Corrections
Can you visit someone in prison by video from home?
Only if the person’s facility offers remote visits and you meet its requirements. Indiana says service availability varies by facility and lists a PC, laptop, or Android mobile device for at-home visits. Missouri requires visitors to provide their own equipment and internet connection. Check the facility’s current instructions to confirm that your existing device works; do not assume a new purchase is necessary. Indiana Department of Correction Missouri Department of Corrections

Before an in-person visit
- Confirm the facility and approval: Verify the person’s exact location and whether you need to apply or appear on an approved list. If approval is unclear at a federal prison, call the facility. Bureau of Prisons visitor guidance
- Check the current policy and schedule: Use the specific institution’s rules for hours, booking, visitor limits, and visit length.
- Prepare for entry: Verify accepted identification, clothing, child paperwork, screening, and permitted belongings.
- Plan transportation: Account for the full trip cost and allow time to arrive for the facility’s entry process.
Before a video visit
- Verify availability and eligibility: Confirm the facility offers video visits, who must be approved, and which booking platform it uses.
- Check technology: Confirm compatible devices, internet requirements, and whether an account or app is needed.
- Review payment terms: Check the fee at scheduling or checkout, how it is billed, and the rules for unused time or early termination.
- Sign in and follow the rules: Join as early as directed and comply with the applicable dress and conduct policy.
How to choose between in-person and video
Compare the real options available for the person’s facility, not assumptions about one format being cheaper or simpler. An in-person visit may make sense if the trip is manageable and the facility’s schedule and entry rules work for you. A video visit may avoid travel, but only if it is offered, you are eligible, your equipment meets the requirements, and its price and schedule are practical.
Quick Recap
- Choose based on availability first: Neither format is useful if the facility does not offer it or you are not approved.
- Compare full costs: Include transportation and trip expenses for an in-person visit; for video, inspect the exact charge and billing terms.
- Check timing and logistics: Compare travel time and visiting hours with remote booking windows, time zones, and early sign-in instructions.
- Read the rules for the specific facility: Identification, clothing, belongings, conduct, monitoring, and visit limits are not uniform across U.S. prisons.
