Neither design is better for everyone. In-ear headphones use a tip that enters the ear canal and is intended to seal it, which can make bass and passive isolation more consistent when the fit is right. Conventional open-fit earbuds rest in the outer ear, leaving more ambient sound available and avoiding a tip inside the canal, though they may feel uncomfortable in a different way. Your ear shape, sensitivity, preferred isolation, and need to hear your surroundings matter more than the label on the box.
What “in-ear” and “earbud” mean
Product names are inconsistent: people and manufacturers sometimes call nearly any small headphone an “earbud.” For this comparison, in-ear headphones have a tip that enters the ear canal and is designed to form a seal. Open-fit earbuds sit in the outer ear without forming the same kind of canal seal. Open-ear headphones are a related but distinct design category; their exact fit depends on the product. This distinction is about how a device sits, not what its marketing label says. RTINGS explains the fit distinction; Bose describes open-ear designs.
How fit changes sound
In-ear headphones: a seal can stabilize bass
A well-formed seal helps preserve bass and blocks some outside sound passively. But the category alone does not guarantee good audio: if a tip sits poorly, the expected seal may not form, and the sound can become thin or bass-light. JBL’s fit guidance recommends trying different tip sizes and gently rotating the earphone to find a seal. JBL’s fit guide gives product-specific instructions; follow the directions for your own model rather than treating one insertion method as universal.

Open-fit earbuds: less seal, more fit variation
Because conventional open-fit earbuds do not seal the canal in the same way, the sound reaching your ear can vary with how the shell rests. RTINGS notes that a looser fit can lead to inconsistencies in bass and treble delivery. That does not mean every open-fit earbud sounds worse: it means fit and ear shape can affect the result, and a design that does not seal should not be expected to deliver the same passive isolation as a sealed in-ear model.

If sealed in-ears sound thin
- Try each tip size supplied with the headphones; the best size is not necessarily the largest.
- Place the tip gently and adjust the angle or position until it feels stable and the sound improves.
- Keep the fit snug but comfortable. Apple uses that guidance for the Apple and Beats products covered by its support page: Apple’s fit and cleaning guidance.
- Stop if a tip causes pain. If you want foam replacements, check that they are compatible with your specific earphone before buying.
Which design is more comfortable?
Comfort is personal, and neither shape is an automatic winner. Canal sensitivity can make an inserted tip unpleasant; other listeners prefer the secure feeling of a sealed fit. An open-fit shell avoids a tip in the canal but can still press against the outer ear, and some designs offer little or no size adjustment.
Tip size, shape, and material all affect how an in-ear model feels. Some people prefer foam tips; others dislike any tip inside the canal. Open-fit shells can be less intrusive for some listeners, but pressure on the outer ear may become uncomfortable over time. A store or app fit test, where available, can help assess a fit, but it cannot guarantee comfort during a long listening session.

Isolation, leakage, and awareness of your surroundings
A sealed in-ear fit blocks more ambient sound passively; active noise cancellation (ANC), when included, can reduce more noise. Open-fit earbuds leave more environmental sound audible, which may suit someone who wants awareness or avoids canal insertion. The tradeoff is less isolation and the possibility of audio leakage, especially at higher listening levels. Some headphones offer an ambient or transparency mode to let outside sound through; it can help when you want more awareness, but it does not replace paying attention to your surroundings.

Fit during movement and replaceable tips
A sealed in-ear fit can be more stable for some listeners. Fins or ear hooks may improve retention during movement, but they can add pressure. Open-fit earbuds vary: some remain secure in a particular ear, while others shift. If you move around while listening, prioritize a stable, comfortable fit rather than assuming one design will stay put for everyone.
Replaceable tip sizes and materials can make sealed models easier to adapt, but confirm that replacements fit your exact model. Open-fit earbuds may not offer comparable tip choices. A fit test can help check seating where the manufacturer provides one, but it does not establish long-session comfort.

Listening comfort, hygiene, and hearing context
Take breaks and keep devices and skin clean and dry. Houston Methodist notes that prolonged use can contribute to irritation or infection risk, particularly when moisture is trapped; Apple also advises keeping covered devices and skin clean and dry and notes that some users may react to device materials. If your ears become irritated, stop wearing the headphones and seek medical advice if needed. Apple’s care guidance.

Noise cancellation may reduce the urge to turn audio up to overcome background noise, but headphones are not hearing protection. Use appropriate hearing protection in loud environments. Houston Methodist reports Dr. Williams’ suggestions of keeping device volume at 50% and following a 60/60 listening rule; these are her recommendations as reported in that article, not a universal medical standard. The same article attributes an exposure figure of 85 dB for eight hours a day, up to 40 hours a week, to OSHA; that is a secondary attribution there, not an independently verified personal exposure allowance.

Choose by the problem you want to solve
- Choose sealed in-ears if you want passive isolation and more consistent bass, and a canal tip feels comfortable to you.
- Choose open-fit earbuds if you prefer not to insert a tip or want more ambient sound to reach your ears, and the shell sits comfortably in your outer ear.
- Try another fit before rejecting the sound if sealed in-ears sound thin: test the supplied tip sizes and positioning first.
- Consider a model with transparency or ambient mode if your need for isolation changes, while continuing to use situational caution.
There is no population-level comfort winner established by the sources cited here. These are fit principles, not a hands-on comparison of specific headphone models; your own ear shape and sensitivity are decisive.
