For multimodal inference with Hugging Face Transformers, load the checkpoint’s matching model and processor, represent the conversation with typed text and media content, format it with the processor’s chat template, and pass the prepared inputs to generation. A pipeline can simplify supported image-text workflows; direct model and processor calls expose more control. The checkpoint—not a generic template—determines which modalities and inputs actually work.
How multimodal inference works
A multimodal processor coordinates the components used to prepare different kinds of input. Depending on the checkpoint, it may bring together a tokenizer, image processor, and audio feature extractor behind one interface. The processor routes content to the relevant component and combines the results for the model. It is a core part of inference, not just an optional tokenizer wrapper. See the Transformers processor documentation.
Some models combine text with images, video, or audio. A processor can turn placeholders such as <image>, <video>, and <audio> into the token patterns its model expects. These markers are formatting tools, not proof that a particular checkpoint supports all those modalities. Check the selected checkpoint’s task and input requirements before writing application code.
Choose between a pipeline and direct model calls
Transformers documents both a higher-level pipeline approach and an explicit model-and-processor workflow. Choose based on how much control your application needs and whether the exact task and checkpoint pairing is supported. The documentation does not establish a universal speed or quality winner.

Implement the direct workflow
The following pattern follows the documented image-text conversation flow. Check the selected checkpoint’s model card and task guide for its required model class, message schema, media representation, and processor arguments. The chat-template reference cited here is versioned for Transformers 4.57.1; API details can change in later releases.

- Load the matching model and processor. Use
AutoProcessor.from_pretrained(model_id)with a model class compatible with that checkpoint. Do not pair a processor from a different model on the assumption that preprocessing is interchangeable. - Build messages with roles and typed content. Text-only messages often use a single string for
content. Multimodal messages can use a list of content items, for example an image item alongside a text instruction. - Format and preprocess with the processor’s chat template. Call
apply_chat_template()on the conversation. With options such astokenize=True,return_dict=True, and an appropriate tensor return type, the result can contain text tokens and modality-specific values such aspixel_valuesor image-grid metadata. Returned keys vary by model. - Move inputs to the model device and generate. Pass the prepared batch to
generate()using the model’s supported settings. - Decode and separate the answer from the prompt. Generated output may contain the original prompt and media placeholders as well as new text. If the application should display only the answer, remove or skip the prompt portion according to the model’s documented output format.
For the exact message format and code for the chosen checkpoint, consult the Transformers 4.57.1 multimodal chat-template guide. Its examples include llava-hf/llava-onevision-qwen2-0.5b-ov-hf for video; that example is likewise not a general compatibility promise.
Prepare media according to its modality
Images
The processor documentation describes supported Python image, array, or tensor inputs. Image pixel values are described in the 0–255 range; if values you supply are already scaled to 0–1, pass do_rescale=False so the processor does not rescale them a second time. The image-text pipeline reference also documents image URLs, local paths, and PIL images. Which representation and preprocessing options work depends on the selected processor. Audio
The processor API documents audio arrays or tensors with shape (C, T), where C is the channel dimension and T is the audio sample length. The any-to-any pipeline reference also describes audio provided as a URL, local path, or loaded audio data. Input support alone does not determine the task: verify that the checkpoint supports the audio operation your application needs. See the processor API and pipeline reference.
Video
The multimodal chat guide demonstrates a typed video item and video objects decoded in memory. It documents a num_frames option for uniform sampling. Hugging Face’s guide cautions: “Each checkpoint has a maximum frame count it was trained with, and exceeding this limit can significantly impact generation quality.” Match frame selection to the checkpoint’s guidance rather than assuming more frames are always better.

Check these details before debugging
- Checkpoint and task: Confirm the model supports the modality and task you are invoking, and use its corresponding model and processor.
- Content structure: Verify that roles, typed content items, and the chat-template call follow the checkpoint’s expected format.
- Processor output: Do not assume every model returns the same keys; inspect the prepared batch and consult that model’s documentation.
- Image scaling: Check whether supplied image values are in the processor’s expected range and disable rescaling if your values are already scaled from 0 to 1.
- Audio dimensions: Check the documented channel-and-sample shape and whether the checkpoint supports the intended audio task.
- Video decoding and frames: Confirm backend support for URL decoding and respect the checkpoint’s trained frame limit.
- Displayed output: Account for prompt tokens and media placeholders that may appear in decoded generated sequences.
- Transformers version: Match the documentation to the installed release. The cited chat-template guide is for 4.57.1; current
mainreferences may describe unreleased or source-installation behavior.
