To add search to a developer portal, choose both how documentation gets indexed and how visitors search that index. For a public Docusaurus site, hosted Algolia DocSearch is a path to investigate; Typesense supports managed or self-hosted deployments; browser-local search suits a small index; and a custom search bar leaves the backend and maintenance choices to your team. The right fit depends on framework, access restrictions, corpus size, and who will operate search—not on a universal performance ranking.
How do I add search to my documentation site?
Start by separating search into two jobs: ingesting pages into an index, then querying that index and displaying results in the portal. Algolia describes its DocSearch crawler as extracting documentation into an Algolia index; its frontend packages query that index and render keyword search or optional Ask AI. The crawler configuration and frontend package version are managed independently, so an update to one does not select or require a matching version of the other. Algolia DocSearch documentation
Before choosing a path, answer these project questions:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Framework and version: Identify the documentation platform and check for a supported integration and its current version.
- Access: Establish whether pages are public, behind authentication, or blocked from external crawlers by a firewall.
- Index size: Estimate the generated searchable index, especially if considering a browser-local approach.
- Update expectations: Decide how quickly changes must appear in search results.
- Operations owner: Assign responsibility for crawling, index health, infrastructure, UI integration, and upgrades.
- Content shape: Account for locales and versioned documentation when validating the chosen ingestion and presentation approach.
These details determine the viable implementation. For example, a hosted crawler needs to reach the documentation, while a local index must be reasonable to download to each visitor’s browser.

Which search approaches does Docusaurus support?
Docusaurus’ search guide documents four routes: Algolia DocSearch, Typesense, local search, and replacing the SearchBar component with a custom implementation. They differ chiefly in who controls ingestion and infrastructure, how much framework-specific setup is available, and what the team must maintain.
| Approach | Indexing and access | Operational ownership | Best reason to consider it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosted Algolia DocSearch | A hosted crawler indexes documentation it can reach; Docusaurus’ default setup generates a sitemap the crawler can use. | Algolia operates the hosted search service; the team configures crawling and integrates the frontend. | Public technical documentation that meets the program’s eligibility rules. |
| Typesense | A scraper indexes structured documentation into a Typesense server; a JavaScript search library queries it. | Choose Typesense Cloud or operate a self-hosted service, and configure the scraper and UI. | A team seeking a managed or self-hosted search cluster. |
| Browser-local search | The index is downloaded to each visitor’s browser. | The team integrates and maintains the local-search setup. | A corpus small enough that downloading its index is acceptable. |
| Custom SearchBar | The team selects the UI and backend or other search mechanism. | The team owns its design, integration, and maintenance. | A portal needing a custom interface or a different backend. |
These are implementation paths, not a benchmark ranking. The official guidance establishes options and tradeoffs but does not provide independent comparative measurements of speed or relevance. Docusaurus search documentation
How do I add Algolia DocSearch to Docusaurus?
Investigate hosted DocSearch when the portal is public and its technical documentation qualifies for the program. Docusaurus says the default sitemap can be used by the crawler and describes a weekly crawl by default; the schedule can be configured through the crawler interface. Eligibility and program rules can change, so check Algolia’s current requirements and setup guide when implementing. Algolia DocSearch documentation
- Confirm access and eligibility. Verify that the crawler can reach the pages and that the site meets the current DocSearch program criteria.
- Prepare crawl discovery. Use the sitemap generated by Docusaurus’ default setup as the crawler’s starting point, and configure the crawl schedule to suit the site.
- Configure the crawler and index. Set up the crawler independently from the frontend package; they are separate parts of the search system.
- Integrate the frontend. Add the DocSearch frontend package and configure it to query the index and render results.
- Validate coverage and updates. Check that representative pages appear in results and confirm that crawl timing meets the portal’s update needs.
Algolia’s free DocSearch program requires a “Search by Algolia” logo next to results. Check the program page for current conditions. Algolia DocSearch program
When hosted crawling is not suitable
A site behind a firewall, or one that does not qualify for hosted DocSearch, may run a crawler itself, as Docusaurus’ guide describes. This changes who owns crawl access and operation; it does not remove the need to maintain the index and frontend integration. Docusaurus search documentation
Can I self-host documentation search?
Yes. Typesense documents a DocSearch-style setup in which a scraper scans structured documentation and indexes it into a Typesense server, while a JavaScript search library queries the index. Docusaurus describes Typesense as available through Typesense Cloud or as a self-hosted service, with scraper and UI components. Typesense DocSearch guide Docusaurus search documentation
For Docusaurus, the Typesense guide lists a sitemap as a scraper prerequisite and documents framework plugins. Check the current setup instructions and plugin version before implementation. Choosing self-hosting means the team takes responsibility for the search service as well as configuring indexing and the frontend; a managed service shifts infrastructure operation but still requires integration and configuration.
When should I use local search instead of a hosted search service?
Docusaurus describes browser-local search as suitable when the index is small enough to download to each visitor’s browser. The guide does not publish a numeric size limit. Generate or estimate the actual index and assess its download impact and visitor experience rather than relying on an invented word-count or megabyte cutoff. Docusaurus search documentation
Local search avoids depending on a hosted crawler reaching public pages, but it does not make index size irrelevant: every visitor must download the index. Whether that tradeoff works depends on the portal’s content and user experience requirements.
Rank #4
When does a custom search UI make sense?
Docusaurus allows teams to replace its SearchBar component. This is useful when the portal needs a custom interface or a backend not covered by the documented integrations. The framework guide does not prescribe a design or backend, so the team must choose those elements and own their integration and maintenance. Docusaurus search documentation
How should you make the final choice?
- Choose hosted DocSearch to investigate when documentation is public, crawler-accessible, and eligible, and the team prefers a hosted service.
- Choose Typesense to investigate when a managed or self-hosted cluster suits the team’s operational preferences and framework needs.
- Choose browser-local search to investigate when the generated index is small enough for visitors to download.
- Choose a custom SearchBar to investigate when an existing backend or distinctive interface requires a bespoke integration.
For any option, assign ownership for indexing, UI integration, version upgrades, and troubleshooting before launch. Validate crawl coverage or index contents, test the real portal’s supported locales and documentation versions, and confirm how quickly updates reach results. Available official guides describe integration choices, but do not establish a universal winner or independent cross-vendor performance comparison.
