One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchUse Apache Camel’s choice() EIP to route each exchange according to message data: define one or more when predicates for destinations and an otherwise branch for messages that match none. Camel selects the first matching when, making Choice the straightforward fit when a finite set of conditions determines the destination.
Build a basic content-based route
In the Java DSL, define the route in a RouteBuilder subclass’s configure method. This official Camel example consumes XML files, checks the city with XPath, and sends London messages to one directory and all other messages to another:
from("file:src/data?noop=true")
.choice()
.when(xpath("/person/city = 'London'"))
.to("file:target/messages/uk")
.otherwise()
.to("file:target/messages/others");
The route’s source endpoint, predicate, and destination URIs are example values; adapt them to the application’s input and message schema. Camel Choice EIP documentation and the official getting-started guide document the pattern and example.
Choose a predicate that matches the message
The predicate expresses the condition Camel evaluates for each exchange. Pick one appropriate to the message format and the data available at the point the route runs.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Predicate | Use it when | Documented example or reference |
|---|---|---|
| Simple or header expression | The decision uses a message header or other data accessible through Simple. | The predicate manual illustrates routing from a JMS queue using header("type"); the Choice documentation describes Simple for inspecting message data such as headers. |
| XPath | The decision depends on an XML element or attribute. | The official example matches /person/city = 'London'. See the getting-started guide. |
| JSONPath | The decision depends on a value in JSON, including nested data. | Camel documents JSONPath as a Choice predicate, including an example matching nested book prices. See the JSONPath language documentation. |
These predicates are alternatives, not interchangeable syntax: use the expression language that fits the payload and the application’s supported Camel release.
Define branch order and unmatched behavior
Put each condition in a when(...) clause and attach its destination with .to(...). When more than one condition could be true, order matters: Camel follows the first matching when and does not continue to later matching branches. Use otherwise() when messages that satisfy none of the predicates should have an explicit destination or handling path. The official Choice EIP page documents these branch semantics.

For example, a route based on a header can use a Simple predicate; replace the sample header values and endpoints with those defined by your system:
from("jms:queue:incoming")
.choice()
.when(simple("${header.type} == 'urgent'"))
.to("jms:queue:priority")
.when(simple("${header.type} == 'routine'"))
.to("jms:queue:standard")
.otherwise()
.to("jms:queue:unclassified");
Select a DSL supported by your application
Camel documents route definitions in Java, XML, Spring XML, and YAML DSLs. Choice examples are available in Java, XML, and YAML; their syntax is DSL-specific, so use the form supported by the application rather than translating Java builder syntax literally. Check the DSL documentation and the Choice EIP documentation for the release in use.

Handle nested steps in the Java DSL
Nested EIPs can make the Java fluent builder’s current scope less obvious. If a nested sub-route must return to the enclosing Choice scope so another when or otherwise can follow, use endChoice() as documented in Camel’s Choice EIP guide.
If a complex combination still exceeds what the Java DSL builder can express clearly, Camel recommends separating the logic into routes and connecting them with the Direct component. This can make the Choice branches easier to follow than forcing all nested steps into one fluent chain.

Use precondition mode only for startup selection
Choice precondition mode evaluates its predicates during startup and keeps the branch selected at initialization. Because those predicates cannot inspect each message’s contents, precondition mode suits configuration-based choices—such as property placeholders, system properties, or environment variables—not ordinary content-based routing. For a decision that must vary from exchange to exchange, use regular Choice evaluation. See Camel’s Choice EIP documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.When Choice is not the right routing pattern
Use Choice when several predicates select among known branches. If an expression instead computes or supplies the destination, Camel’s message-router documentation identifies Routing Slip and Dynamic Router as alternatives. The practical distinction is whether the route evaluates a finite set of conditions or obtains a destination dynamically. See the message-router documentation.

Check the Camel version before applying an example
The examples here follow the documented Camel 4.22.x Choice guidance alongside the project’s manuals. DSL details and component documentation can vary by release, so verify the relevant Choice, language, and endpoint documentation for the version deployed by your application. Camel in Action, Second Edition is optional background rather than current API guidance: Manning lists it as a 2018 book by Claus Ibsen and Jonathan Anstey, with 912 pages and ISBN 9781617292934.
