I can skip a $20-a-month AI subscription if a local model on my own computer reliably handles the work I actually do. That is a personal fit, not proof that local AI matches ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro across the board. The fair test is to run my regular prompts through both options and decide whether the local answers meet my quality bar.
What I mean by “does everything I need”
For this decision, “everything” means the recurring tasks I would otherwise use a paid chatbot for: drafting or revising everyday writing, summarizing material I provide, helping with routine coding questions, and working through ordinary questions. It does not mean every possible task, the hardest reasoning problems, or access to every hosted tool.
I would judge the result by whether I can use the answer with the same amount of checking and editing—not by whether a model’s name or benchmark score sounds impressive. If a local model gets those jobs done well enough, I do not need to pay for capabilities I rarely use.

What the $20 subscriptions buy
As of October 7, 2026, the US monthly prices on the providers’ pages are $20 for ChatGPT Plus and $20 for Claude Pro. OpenAI describes Plus as enhanced access to the ChatGPT web app, with broader model and tool access than Free, higher limits, and advanced reasoning access; exact model availability can change. OpenAI’s Plus overview says API use is billed separately. Anthropic lists Claude Pro at $20 per month in the US when billed monthly, with local-currency pricing where supported; its Pro plan overview also says Console API usage is separate.

Claude Pro has an annual option: Anthropic’s pricing page lists $200 billed up front for a year. The monthly comparison is not universal: taxes, regional pricing, billing options, features, and availability may differ or change.
These are managed services, not simply model downloads. Their subscriptions bundle access through a hosted interface and may include tools or model options that a local setup does not provide. The price buys that convenience and access as well as answers from AI.

How I decide whether local is good enough
I would test my existing computer before buying hardware or cancelling a subscription I still rely on. Pick a small set of real prompts from normal work—one writing task, one summary, one coding question if relevant, and one task that tends to require careful reasoning. Run the same prompts through the local model and the hosted service, then compare the outputs against the same standards.
- Use representative inputs. Include the context and constraints you normally provide, not specially simplified prompts that make one option look better.
- Set a usable-answer bar. Check factual accuracy, completeness, clarity, and how much correction each answer needs. For coding, verify that the suggested change works in your environment; for summaries, check whether important points were missed.
- Repeat tasks that matter. A single appealing response does not establish dependable performance. Try variations of the tasks you do often.
- Count the work around the answer. Include setup, waiting, prompt adjustments, fact-checking, and any steps needed to get current information or use connected tools.
- Keep the paid plan only if its difference matters. If the hosted result saves enough time or handles tasks the local model cannot, that can justify the recurring cost. If not, the subscription may not earn its place in your budget.
There is no reliable universal score that tells me whether a local model matches the current ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro experience for my particular work. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison of local AI and ChatGPT found cloud systems stronger on difficult tasks in its own testing, while noting local benefits such as offline use and customization. That is one publication’s evaluation, not a result that settles every model, computer, or set of prompts.

Where local AI can win—and what it costs
No recurring inference bill, if the model runs on your hardware
Ollama says models run locally on a user’s own hardware can be used without a recurring inference charge. That does not make the setup cost-free: the computer, electricity, and any upgrades are part of the real cost. Ollama’s pricing page distinguishes local runs from its separate cloud services, which have their own usage terms.
Do not confuse a cloud product’s price with local use. Ollama announced on August 31, 2026, that its cloud Pro plan costs $20 per month and includes $60 in monthly usage credits. Those figures concern cloud usage, not the cost of running a model on a computer you own. See Ollama’s pricing announcement.

Offline access and customization
A model running fully on-device can be useful when there is no internet connection and can offer flexibility in how it is configured. Privacy depends on the entire workflow, though: if a local application sends prompts to a remote service or uses online tools, the data is no longer staying solely on your device. OpenAI separately says users can opt out of having conversations used to improve its models; that is a cloud-service setting, not the same thing as local inference.

Hardware, setup, and maintenance
Running a local model means downloading and managing software and model files, and the computer’s resources constrain what runs comfortably. Demanding models may need more RAM and a capable GPU, but there is no universal minimum configuration established for replacing either paid plan. Start with the machine you have: try a model that runs acceptably, and only consider a hardware purchase if the tasks and performance justify it.

Limits and tools still matter
Paid services have limits too. Anthropic describes Claude Pro usage as subject to session-based and weekly limits; actual use varies with message and conversation length, model, and features. It is not accurate to reduce that to a fixed number of messages for every subscriber. Hosted plans can also offer broader tool and model access than a local setup, while a local workflow may require extra configuration. If you depend on web search, integrations, or other service features, check that your local setup actually provides them before treating it as a replacement.

| What matters | Local model | ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring AI cost | No recurring inference fee for a model running on your own hardware, according to Ollama; hardware and electricity still cost money. | ChatGPT Plus: $20/month, billed monthly. Claude Pro: $20/month in the US when billed monthly; regional pricing and terms may differ. |
| Setup and upkeep | Download, configure, and maintain the local software and model; performance depends on the computer. | Managed web service; access and features depend on the current plan and its limits. |
| Internet and privacy | Can work offline and keep prompts on-device if the whole workflow is local. | Hosted service requires sending prompts to the provider; OpenAI says users can opt out of model-improvement use. |
| Tools and model access | Depends on the chosen model and software; equivalent web search, integrations, or hosted features are not established. | Plans offer broader model and tool access than their free tiers, but availability can change. |
| Best way to judge quality | Test the model on your real tasks and check how much revision or verification its answers need. | Compare against the same prompts and standards; pay for the hosted advantage only if it matters in your work. |
My decision rule
I do not need a local model to beat ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro at everything. I need it to be dependable enough for the tasks I do often, on hardware I already have or can reasonably justify. If it clears that bar and I do not rely on paid-plan tools or extra capability, skipping the subscription is a sensible choice. If my work regularly needs stronger reasoning, current hosted features, or less setup and maintenance, the subscription may still be worth $20 a month.
