Moonforge is a framework for assembling a custom Linux operating system for an embedded device—not a ready-to-install desktop distribution. Announced by Igalia on March 9, 2026, it brings together Yocto layers, kas configuration and build tooling so product teams can build and maintain tailored device images. The distinction matters: Moonforge can provide integration groundwork, but teams still need to handle product-specific hardware support and software.
What Moonforge is—and is not
Igalia’s launch announcement describes Moonforge as an operating-system framework for Linux devices that simplifies building and maintaining custom systems. In a June 17, 2026 explanation, maintainer Emmanuele Bassi sharpened the scope: Moonforge is neither a general-purpose Linux distribution nor, in the conventional sense, an embedded Linux distribution. It is a collection of feature-oriented Yocto layers that teams use to assemble their own OS.
That later clarification is the most useful way to interpret the launch. Moonforge is not an image intended for everyday laptop use, nor a complete product OS that automatically supports any embedded board. It is a composable foundation for teams building a product-specific system, including devices designed around a single application. Igalia’s launch announcement uses the term “Linux distribution,” but the maintainer’s more precise description explains what a user actually gets.
How a Moonforge build fits together
Moonforge combines Yocto/OpenEmbedded layers with kas YAML configuration fragments. Those fragments describe repositories, enabled layers, dependencies and configuration defaults. A product team can keep its own additions in a downstream layer rather than folding product-specific changes into shared upstream components.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Choose the relevant feature layers and target configuration. Moonforge materials describe options such as QEMU x86_64 and Raspberry Pi, along with components for graphical sessions and updates.
- Add product-specific work downstream. Teams adapt the configuration and layers to their hardware, board support package (BSP), applications and requirements.
- Build with BitBake. kas and the configured Yocto layers define the build; BitBake produces the operating-system image and, where configured, associated artifacts.
- Integrate the build into development workflows. Moonforge describes containerized kas environments and CI/CD workflows that can generate images and related outputs.
This organization is intended to make integration and maintenance more repeatable; it does not remove the engineering needed to bring up hardware, validate a product image or maintain its downstream components.
Documented capabilities and examples
Moonforge’s project materials describe feature layers and integrations for several parts of an embedded Linux workflow. These are documented capabilities and examples, not a guarantee that every combination is available or validated for a particular product.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Targets: QEMU x86_64 and Raspberry Pi are documented. Igalia also reported demonstrating over-the-air updates on Raspberry Pi 5 at Embedded World 2026. Check the current layers and board revision before relying on support for a specific board.
- Build environments: kas builds can run in Docker or Podman containers, according to project materials.
- Updates: The described options include RAUC or systemd-based A/B update support. A/B approaches use separate system slots so an update can be applied to one while the other remains available; the precise behavior depends on the product configuration.
- Graphical and web components: The project lists a Weston graphical session and a WPE WebKit environment among its modular features.
- Security and build artifacts: Project materials describe immutable or read-only root filesystem images, update bundles, security reporting and software bills of materials (SBOMs) generated through Yocto recipes.
Igalia’s account of its Embedded World 2026 demo describes RAUC dual-slot OTA updates on Raspberry Pi 5, hawkBit fleet management, and automatic SBOM and CVE reporting per build. That is the company’s report of an event demonstration, not independent validation or evidence that every listed feature is enabled by default.
Who should consider using Moonforge?
Moonforge is aimed at product teams that need to build and maintain their own Linux system, especially where repeatable builds, controlled updates and integration into CI/CD matter. Its modular, upstream/downstream approach may help keep reusable components distinct from product-specific changes.

It is a poor fit if you simply want a Linux distribution to install on a personal computer, or expect a framework to provide automatic support for an arbitrary board. Before adopting it, assess the target hardware and BSP, the features your product needs, the work required to maintain downstream layers, and whether your team can own its build and update process. Moonforge is described as usable but early-stage in the maintainer’s June 2026 post, with further expansion planned.

Start with the official Moonforge documentation, which provides the getting-started route, tutorials, customization guidance and support pointers. The documentation also points to a downstream derivative example that can help illustrate where product-specific work belongs. QEMU x86_64 offers a documented target to explore without buying a development board; for physical hardware, verify that the current project layers support the exact board and revision you plan to use.
