The IEM Cologne Major 2026 and the announced regular IEM Cologne 2027 both culminate in an eight-team, single-elimination playoff and a best-of-five final, but they get there differently. The 2026 Major filtered 32 teams through three stages, while the 2027 event starts with 16 teams in a double-elimination Stage 1 before a two-group Stage 2. For fans, the Major opened Stage 3 to spectators before its LANXESS Arena playoffs; the 2027 event is planned around four arena playoff days and a 360-degree stage.

How the two Cologne events differ

These are different editions and competition types: IEM Cologne 2026 was a 32-team Counter-Strike 2 Major held June 2–21, 2026; IEM Cologne 2027 is announced as a regular 24-team ESL Pro Tour Championship, scheduled for August 4–15, 2027. The 2027 format and event details are plans for a future event and may change.

How teams reach the playoffs

IEM Cologne Major 2026: three stages for 32 teams

The Major divided its 32 teams into successive 16-team stages. Stage 1 ran June 2–5, Stage 2 June 6–9, and Stage 3 June 11–15. Eight teams moved on from each stage, leaving eight for the June 18–21 playoffs. The structure gave teams three rounds of stage competition before the bracket.

  • Real-world physics adds depth the gameplay
  • Internet connection required for online play

Regular IEM Cologne 2027: a play-in followed by two groups

The announced 2027 event begins with 16 teams in a double-elimination Stage 1 on August 4–6. Eight advance to join eight direct entrants in Stage 2, which runs August 7–10 as two groups of eight with double elimination. The top four from each group reach the eight-team playoffs, scheduled for August 12–15.

In practical terms, the 2026 Major used three successive stages to narrow the field, while the 2027 regular event uses a Stage 1 play-in and a grouped Stage 2. The shared eight-team playoff size does not mean the qualification routes are interchangeable.

Match lengths and playoff stakes

Best-of-one matches are shorter and leave less room to recover from a poor map; best-of-three and best-of-five series give teams more maps to adapt. The 2026 Major used Bo1s for matches other than advancement and elimination in its first two stages, then used Bo3s throughout Stage 3. The announced 2027 regular event specifies Bo3 matches in both preliminary stages.

Both editions use single-elimination eight-team playoffs. In each, quarterfinals and semifinals are Bo3 and the final is Bo5. The announced 2027 event also includes a Bo3 third-place match, a playoff fixture not listed for the 2026 Major.

What attending fans can expect

The 2026 Major: spectators before the final bracket

The 2026 Major opened Stage 3 to live attendance for the first time in IEM Cologne history, expanding the in-person event beyond the playoffs at LANXESS Arena. In its post-event recap, ESL FACEIT Group reported 67,000 fans from more than 75 countries across nine tournament days. The figure is the organizer’s report, not an independently audited attendance count.

The 2027 event: four arena playoff days

ESL’s 2027 announcement describes a 360-degree LANXESS Arena stage and four days of playoff matches in front of a crowd. The schedule includes two quarterfinal days, semifinals, a third-place match and the grand final. That is more arena playoff time than the familiar Friday-to-Sunday pattern described in ESL’s general event context; specific operations and plans may change before the 2027 event.

Tickets and seating

The official IEM Cologne 2027 event page lists one-day and four-day ticket choices, upper- and lower-level seating, reserved seating and an IEM+ upgrade. It states a minimum attendance age of 16 and says tickets are sold in waves. Ticket prices and availability can change, so check the official page for current information before planning a visit.

What the 2026 audience figures mean

ESL FACEIT Group reported more than 100 million hours watched and a peak of 2.75 million viewers for the 2026 Major. These are organizer-reported figures; the available event materials do not provide an independent audit or viewing methodology. They describe the Major’s reported reach, not a guaranteed benchmark for the 2027 regular event.

Which edition suits which kind of fan?

  • For following a Major’s qualification run: the 2026 format offers three successive stages and a mix of Bo1 and Bo3 matches in the first two stages, followed by an all-Bo3 Stage 3.
  • For watching a longer arena playoff program: the 2027 event is announced with four crowd-facing playoff days, including a third-place match.
  • For comparing the finals: both editions schedule a Bo5 final, but the 2027 plan adds a Bo3 third-place match.
  • For attending earlier competition: the 2026 Major explicitly opened Stage 3 to spectators; the 2027 event page describes its arena playoff experience and ticket options.

The distinction matters: IEM Cologne is the event location and series, while “Major” identifies a specific competition edition. The 2026 Cologne event was a CS2 Major; the announced 2027 Cologne event is a regular ESL Pro Tour Championship. These formats should not be generalized to every IEM event or every CS2 Major.
