To protect yourself from identity theft, secure personal information and account logins, watch financial and government records for unfamiliar activity, and use a credit freeze or fraud alert when appropriate. If you suspect misuse, contact affected institutions and report it at IdentityTheft.gov. These steps reduce risk and help you respond; none prevents every kind of fraud.
What identity theft can look like
Identity theft happens when someone uses your personal or financial information without permission. The information may include your name and address, Social Security number, bank or credit-card details, or medical insurance information. Misuse can affect credit, bank accounts, taxes, benefits, employment, or medical coverage.
Look into warning signs such as unfamiliar bills, collection calls about debts you did not incur, accounts you do not recognize on a credit report, a loan denial you cannot explain, or mail that stops arriving. Tax and Social Security clues can include a rejected tax return, an unfamiliar W-2 or 1099, unexpected unemployment benefits reporting, unknown account activity, or wages on your Social Security record that you did not earn. Any one sign warrants investigation, but does not by itself prove identity theft. USAGov’s identity-theft guidance and the IRS identity theft guide describe additional examples.

Reduce the chance that your information is misused
Protect sensitive documents and information
- Keep your Social Security card and documents that show your number in a secure place instead of carrying them routinely.
- Share a Social Security number or other sensitive details only when necessary. Verify that a request is legitimate; the IRS advises giving your SSN only when you initiated the contact or know who is asking.
- Collect mail regularly, arrange a mail hold when you are away, and securely dispose of paper records that contain sensitive information. The FTC recommends shredding charge receipts, credit applications, and other documents with personal details.
Secure accounts and devices
- Use complex, unique passwords for important accounts. Update passwords and PINs promptly if an account may have been exposed.
- Keep computer security patches current. The IRS also recommends using a firewall and anti-spam and antivirus software.
- Do not respond to unexpected calls or messages asking for personal information. For a purported IRS message or a threatening demand for immediate payment, verify it through official IRS contact information. The IRS says it does not initiate contact by email or social media to request personal or financial information.
Check records for activity you do not recognize
Review bank and card statements, credit reports, and your Social Security earnings record. A data breach does not automatically mean someone has used your information, but unfamiliar activity should be investigated promptly. IRS identity-protection tips cover safer handling of personal information and account security.

Choose between a credit freeze and a fraud alert
Both measures concern new-credit misuse, but they work differently. A freeze restricts access to your credit report; a fraud alert asks businesses to take reasonable steps to verify your identity before opening new credit. They can coexist, but neither protects a compromised bank login or tax account.
| Measure | What it does | Who can use it and duration | How to place it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit freeze | Limits access to your credit report, which can make it harder for a thief to open a new credit account. | Free to place and remove; available to anyone; remains until you lift or remove it. | Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion separately. You may need to lift it when applying for credit. |
| Initial fraud alert | Asks businesses to take reasonable steps to verify an applicant’s identity before opening new credit. | Free; lasts one year. | Contact one of the three nationwide credit bureaus; that bureau must notify the other two. |
| Extended fraud alert | Provides a longer-running identity-verification instruction for people who have experienced identity theft. | Free; lasts seven years; eligibility and documentation requirements apply. | Follow a bureau’s instructions and provide requested documentation, which may include an FTC Identity Theft Report. |
For the steps and rights associated with freezes and alerts, see the FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov recovery steps and its Know Your Rights guidance. If you are applying for credit, plan ahead for a freeze lift and follow the bureau’s instructions.

- WHAT DOES IT COVER: Roll once over names, addresses, account numbers, barcodes, and prescription details on mail, statements, shipping labels, and boxes before recycling. The patented 0.5" masking pattern hides 3 lines of text in one pass.
- HOW MANY USES DO YOU GET: Each pre-inked Guard Your ID Advanced Roller delivers about 1,000 impressions (roughly 100 feet of coverage), so the 3-pack gives you around 3,000. A twist-on cap keeps the ink fresh for a 2-year shelf life.
- DOES IT WORK ON GLOSSY LABELS: Yes, on most glossy and coated surfaces, plus paper, envelopes, junk mail, and prescription labels. Give the ink 10 to 15 seconds to dry on slick surfaces; it is instant on paper. Results vary by coating.
- IS IT REFILLABLE: No, and that is the point. The Advanced Roller is pre-inked and sealed, so there are no refill cartridges to buy, no ink bottles to handle, and nothing to dry out on the shelf. When one runs out, reach for the next roller.
- SHREDDER OR ROLLER: No jams, no paper dust, no noise, and the page stays intact and recyclable. Covers boxes and shipping labels a shredder cannot. Faster than a redacting marker, fits in a drawer. Turquoise, Green, White: mail, office, parent.
What to do if you suspect identity theft
- Contact each affected company. Ask its fraud department to close or freeze affected accounts and explain its dispute and documentation process. Change passwords and PINs for affected accounts.
- Place an initial fraud alert and review your credit. Contact one nationwide credit bureau to place the alert. Get reports from all three nationwide bureaus and look for unfamiliar accounts or transactions. FTC recovery guidance directs consumers to AnnualCreditReport.com and says reports can be checked weekly for free.
- Report the theft to the FTC. Use IdentityTheft.gov or call 1-877-438-4338. The service can produce an FTC Identity Theft Report and a recovery plan tailored to your situation. Save or print both; if you do not create an account, save them before leaving the page.
- Consider stronger credit-file protections. Depending on your situation, place a credit freeze or request an extended fraud alert. Follow the bureau’s documentation requirements for an extended alert.
- Keep a record of your recovery. Save letters, emails, dispute documents, and case numbers, and keep a log of calls. A police report may be useful in some cases; the FTC advises bringing your FTC report and evidence if you file one.
- Report unauthorized bank or card activity promptly. Contact the bank or card issuer and follow its reporting process. Rights and deadlines depend on the payment type and circumstances, so ask the institution what applies to your case.
An FTC Identity Theft Report can help establish the theft with businesses and support certain consumer rights. Use the recovery plan alongside any specific instructions from affected companies or government agencies. The FTC also explains what to know about identity theft.
What to do about tax or Social Security number misuse
If you suspect tax-related identity theft, stop communicating with the suspected thief and do not click suspicious links or attachments. Update your IRS online account password to a complex, unique password; follow the instructions on any IRS notice; report the issue; and use IdentityTheft.gov’s recovery guidance. The IRS recommends getting an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN), keeping records of communications, and continuing to file returns and pay taxes as usual unless the IRS tells you otherwise. Check with your state tax agency about additional steps.

An IP PIN helps prevent someone else from filing a federal tax return using your identifying number. The IRS guide has separate procedures for dependent, deceased-person, and employment identity theft. Follow the instructions on an IRS notice rather than sending a form automatically: the IRS says most people do not need to file Form 14039 and explains when the affidavit is and is not appropriate. For unfamiliar wages, benefits, or earnings, use the relevant agency’s official records and reporting instructions to investigate.
