MEGA is the stronger fit if you want free storage with account-wide client-side encryption and secure chat; Icedrive is worth comparing if its paid storage tiers, sharing controls, or lifetime-plan option better match your workflow. Neither is the universal winner. Choose by the plan you would actually use, the files you need protected, recovery expectations, and how you share files—not just the headline storage quota.
At a glance: Icedrive vs MEGA
| What matters | Icedrive | MEGA |
|---|---|---|
| Free storage | 10 GB, according to Icedrive’s official plan matrix. | 20 GB, according to Cloudwards’ 2026 comparison; it also reports a temporary path to 30 GB after completing tasks, so that extra space may be conditional. |
| Client-side encryption | Icedrive’s official matrix says zero-knowledge client-side encryption is unavailable on Free and available on paid plans. | Cloudwards reports account-wide client-side encryption for free and paid accounts. |
| Paid storage | The official matrix lists 2 TB, 4 TB, and 6 TB for Pro, Pro+, and Pro Max. | Cloudwards’ comparison gives examples of 3 TB, 10 TB, and 20 TB Pro tiers, plus customizable Pro Flexi; confirm current options directly before buying. |
| File versions | The official matrix lists 30, 60, and 90 days of retention and maximums of 25, 50, and 100 versions across the three paid tiers. | Cloudwards reports up to 100 versions without a time limit. It separately reports longer deleted-file retention for paid tiers. |
| Notable workflow features | Public-link controls, user-to-user sharing, file requests, comments or discussions, and paid desktop sync are listed on Icedrive’s plan page. | Cloudwards describes folder invitations and links, desktop-app backup, secure messaging, and encrypted video meetings. |
Icedrive’s figures in the table come from its official plan matrix. MEGA figures and feature descriptions are reported by Cloudwards’ 2026 comparison, a secondary source. Treat those details as reported rather than independently confirmed current MEGA terms.
Which service is better for free storage and encryption?
Based on the available comparison, MEGA has the edge for a free account: Cloudwards reports 20 GB of free storage and client-side encryption across free and paid accounts. Icedrive’s official plan page lists 10 GB free and does not include its zero-knowledge client-side encryption on that tier.

Client-side encryption means files are encrypted on your device before they are stored remotely, so the provider is not meant to hold the keys needed to read the protected content. The practical difference is coverage: Cloudwards describes MEGA’s encryption as account-wide, while Icedrive lists its zero-knowledge encrypted drive as a paid-plan feature. Encryption is not a blanket guarantee of safety; protect your account credentials and any recovery material required to regain access to encrypted files.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Cloudwards also reports that MEGA users may reach 30 GB temporarily by completing tasks. Because the extra space is described as temporary, do not count it as permanent capacity unless MEGA’s current terms confirm that for your account.
How do Icedrive’s paid plans compare with MEGA’s?
Icedrive’s current official matrix lists three subscription capacities: 2 TB for Pro, 4 TB for Pro+, and 6 TB for Pro Max. It also lists desktop sync, a desktop virtual drive, an encrypted virtual drive, and device limits of three, five, and ten respectively across those paid tiers.

Cloudwards’ 2026 comparison instead presents Icedrive’s older-style Pro I, Pro III, and Pro V examples, and MEGA Pro I, II, and III examples. The plan names and Icedrive capacities do not align with Icedrive’s official matrix. Its comparison also lists annual-plan examples of $4.92, $9.92, and $16.58 monthly for Icedrive, and $117.36, $234.72, and $352.08 annually for MEGA. These are dated editorial examples, not verified current checkout prices. Prices, currencies, taxes, plan names, quotas, and billing terms can vary or change; check the live offer for your region before deciding on value.

Maximum version counts are 25, 50, and 100 respectively. Cloudwards reports that MEGA offers up to 100 file versions without a time limit, with deleted-file recovery periods longer on paid tiers. Version history and deleted-file recovery are different: one lets you return to an earlier version of a file, while the other concerns recovering a file that was deleted.

Which service has the better sharing and backup workflow?
Choose Icedrive when its link controls and collaboration features fit
Icedrive’s official plan matrix lists public links, user-to-user sharing, file requests, and comments or discussions. It also lists public-link controls on paid plans, along with desktop sync. These features may suit you if you need to distribute files through links or collect files from others; check the specific permissions available on the plan you intend to buy.
Consider MEGA for desktop backup or secure communication
Cloudwards describes backup through MEGA’s desktop app, as well as secure messaging, encrypted video meetings, and file sharing. Those details are secondary-source reporting in the available comparison; confirm current capabilities and terms with MEGA before relying on a particular feature.
Rank #4
- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

- The available storage capacity may vary.
The useful question is not simply which service has more sharing features. Decide whether you need public links with controls, invitations to specific recipients, a way to collect incoming files, desktop backup, or communication tools alongside storage.
Does Icedrive’s lifetime plan make it the better value?
Icedrive has an official lifetime plans page, but the material available here does not establish a specific quota or price for each lifetime option. The page says quota varies by plan and lists 14 days of file-version retention, with a maximum of 30 versions. It positions lifetime storage for casual use and says subscription plans may suit heavy automation, NAS-style syncing, or large-scale archiving better.

A one-time payment does not by itself guarantee that a service will operate for your lifetime. Compare the plan’s actual quota, included features, recovery terms, and the provider’s current conditions with the recurring plan you would otherwise buy. Cloudwards’ comparison does not establish an equivalent MEGA lifetime option.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you trust Icedrive or MEGA?
A storage provider’s encryption features can help answer what the provider can access, but they cannot establish a blanket guarantee that a service is trustworthy or that your files are risk-free. Icedrive’s official plan matrix states that its free tier lacks zero-knowledge client-side encryption and that paid plans include it. Cloudwards reports account-wide client-side encryption for MEGA accounts, including free ones. The MEGA claim is secondary-source reporting here, not a verified statement from MEGA’s own documentation.
Before entrusting either service with important files, review the current security and recovery terms, understand how you retain access to encryption credentials, and keep another copy of irreplaceable data if losing access would be costly.

- Set your minimum storage need. Compare your expected usage with Icedrive’s official 10 GB free and 2 TB, 4 TB, and 6 TB paid tiers, or with MEGA’s free and paid capacities as stated in its current offer. Cloudwards reports MEGA at 20 GB free and paid examples at 3 TB, 10 TB, and 20 TB, but verify those figures before purchase.
- Decide which files need client-side encryption. If you want that protection on a free account, the available reporting favors MEGA, while Icedrive’s official matrix reserves its zero-knowledge feature for paid plans.
- Check recovery needs. Compare version retention and version counts separately from deleted-file recovery. A longer version window does not necessarily mean a deleted file can be restored for the same period.
- Map your sharing workflow. Decide whether you need controlled public links, recipient invitations, file requests, or desktop backup, then confirm those features on the current plan.
- Verify the actual offer. Check the live regional price, currency, quota, plan name, tax treatment, and billing term; the comparison’s price examples are not a current price feed.
