Separately, teams may agree before a daytime Test to use a pink ball as a trial aimed at reducing lost play due to bad light; that choice applies throughout the match and cannot be changed once play starts. The changes apply to international series beginning on or after 1 October 2026, while series already in progress continue under the previous conditions.
What is the penalty for a batter wasting time?
In men’s cricket, the penalty escalates by offence when a batter fails to be ready within the prescribed time. The ICC’s announcement does not give a specific number of seconds in its summary, so the applicable playing conditions for the format govern the timing.
| Offence | Consequence |
|---|---|
| First | Warning to the batter |
| Second | Final warning |
| Third and each subsequent offence | Five penalty runs to the fielding side |
Repeated offences may also bring Code of Conduct provisions into play. This batter-readiness rule is distinct from rules that penalize a fielding side for a slow over rate.
Can a pink ball be used in a daytime Test?
Yes, as a trial, but only if both teams agree before the Test. The ICC describes the purpose as reducing lost playing time due to bad light. Once the teams choose the pink ball, it must be used for the whole match; they cannot switch from a red ball to a pink ball after the Test has begun. The ICC announcement does not establish comparative effects on visibility, performance, cost, or competitive advantage.

When do the updated playing conditions apply?
The updated conditions take effect for international series starting on or after 1 October 2026. A series already underway on that date stays under the previous regulations. The ICC’s Playing Conditions index lists October 2026 conditions for men’s Test, ODI, T20I and four-day Test cricket; women’s Test, ODI and T20I cricket; and World Test Championship conditions.
What other rule changes did the ICC announce?
Test-day finish after a wicket
A wicket falling before the final over is complete no longer necessarily ends the day’s play. Play can continue if conditions remain fit, rather than ending automatically because the wicket fell.
