Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Windows 2000 Professional is an officially supported operating system for the IBM ThinkPad T40, including Service Packs 0 through 3 and USB 2.0 support. A reliable reinstall depends on three things: identifying the exact machine type and optional hardware, preserving C:IBMTOOLS and personal files, and installing Lenovo/IBM’s component drivers in the right order.
What you need before installing Windows 2000
- Legitimate Windows 2000 Professional installation media and a working optical drive.
- A backup of personal files and the existing
C:IBMTOOLSdirectory. Repartitioning or formatting can remove both. - The T40 machine type and hardware details. T40 configurations differ in graphics adapters, wireless cards, displays, modems and network adapters.
- Driver packages copied to another computer, CD, or USB storage. Legacy downloads may no longer be hosted or may be difficult to locate.
IBM documentation states that T40 BIOS interfaces were designed to remain compatible with Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows 2000 and Windows XP Professional. That compatibility does not mean every used T40 has the same optional hardware.
How to install Windows 2000 Professional on a ThinkPad T40
- Back up required files and copy
C:IBMTOOLSto external storage. - Start the ThinkPad and press F1 at the IBM startup logo to enter BIOS Setup.
- Open the Startup or boot-order settings, move CD-ROM ahead of the hard disk, save the change and restart.
- Insert the Windows 2000 Professional CD and boot from it. Follow Setup’s partition and formatting prompts only after confirming that the backup is complete.
- Complete the first Windows 2000 boot, then apply Service Pack 3 as Lenovo’s T40 instructions specify. The Lenovo procedure cites an historical Microsoft download location; its present availability was not established, so obtain the service pack from a legitimate, clearly identified archive if the original location is unavailable.
- Install the Intel chipset package before troubleshooting individual devices.
Which T40 drivers should be installed, and in what order?
Use the exact machine type and Device Manager hardware IDs when more than one package appears plausible. Lenovo’s archived T40 index contains Windows 2000 packages for the following device families:
| Order | Component | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Intel chipset | Install first; it provides the platform identification needed by later devices. |
| 2 | USB 2.0 (ICH4) | The Windows 2000 base installation may leave this controller unknown. Use the extracted chipset files and the USB2NXXX.INF file described below. |
| 3 | CardBus/PCMCIA | Use the package for the PCI1520/W2K controller when CardBus remains unrecognized. |
| 4 | Graphics and monitor | Match the installed ATI Radeon or FireGL variant and the panel; do not assume another T40’s display package fits. |
| 5 | Audio | Install the T40-specific sound package after chipset and display setup. |
| 6 | Ethernet and modem | Identify the wired adapter and modem by hardware ID before selecting packages. |
| 7 | TrackPoint or UltraNav | Choose the package matching the installed pointing-device family. |
| 8 | Wireless LAN | Match the actual card. Lenovo’s historical index includes an Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3b Windows 2000/XP package dated 23 August 2005, but that entry is historical documentation, not a guarantee of current download availability. |
| 9 | Power management and configuration utilities | Install these before testing suspend, hibernation and Fn-key functions. |
The archived index also lists an ATI Radeon/FireGL Windows 2000/XP package dated 11 August 2005. Release dates identify the period driver coverage; they do not establish that a package is safe, current or still downloadable.

ThinkPad T40 USB 2.0 controller appears as an unknown device
Lenovo documents this as a normal post-installation issue: Windows 2000 does not always identify the T40’s ICH4 southbridge USB 2.0 controller automatically.
- Extract the Intel chipset package to a known folder rather than running only its automatic installer.
- Open Device Manager and locate the unknown USB controller.
- Choose Update Driver, select the option to specify a location, and browse to the extracted ICH4 directory.
- Point Setup to the
USB2NXXX.INFfile and complete the installation. - Restart and confirm that the USB controller no longer has a warning icon.
A generic Windows reinstall will not necessarily correct this device; the chipset files and INF path are the important parts of Lenovo’s procedure.

ThinkPad T40 PCMCIA CardBus controller is not recognized
If one or both CardBus controllers remain unknown after chipset installation, install Lenovo’s Windows 2000 package for the PCI1520/W2K controller. Verify the hardware ID first, because a different controller variant requires a different package. Restart and recheck both entries in Device Manager.
Finish the driver installation and validate the hardware
- Install graphics, monitor, audio, modem and Ethernet drivers that match the machine’s hardware IDs.
- Install the matching TrackPoint/UltraNav, wireless LAN, ThinkPad configuration and power-management packages.
- In Device Manager, verify that no required device remains under Other devices or has a yellow warning icon.
- Test the display’s available resolutions and color modes.
- Connect to a wired network, then test the installed wireless adapter if present.
- Play audio through the internal speakers and headphone output.
- Test suspend and resume, then hibernation. IBM’s service guide specifies that Fn+F12 works only when the Windows 2000/XP power-management driver is installed.
- Test the optical drive, USB ports, CardBus slot, TrackPoint, modem (if required), battery charging and AC operation.
Choosing between similar legacy driver packages
- Machine type: confirm the complete T40 type, not just the T40 family name.
- Hardware ID: compare the PCI or USB identifier shown in Device Manager with the package documentation.
- Operating-system scope: select Windows 2000 support; an XP-only package is not an equivalent substitute.
- Component variant: distinguish TrackPoint from UltraNav, wireless-card models, and Radeon versus FireGL graphics.
- Provenance: prefer Lenovo/IBM support material or an archival source that identifies the original package and version.
- Integrity and availability: historical listing dates do not prove that a download remains hosted or that an old binary has been verified recently.
Common failure symptoms and the next check
| Symptom | Next check |
|---|---|
| Unknown USB 2.0 controller | Repeat the extracted-chipset installation and select the ICH4 USB2NXXX.INF file manually. |
| Unknown PCMCIA/CardBus controller | Confirm the hardware ID and install the PCI1520/W2K package. |
| No hibernation with Fn+F12 | Install the ThinkPad Windows 2000 power-management driver, then restart. |
| Wrong resolution or missing acceleration | Identify the exact ATI Radeon/FireGL adapter and install its Windows 2000 display package. |
| Wireless driver will not install | Read the adapter’s hardware ID; T40 units shipped with different wireless options. |
| Several devices remain unknown | Recheck chipset installation first, then install drivers in component order rather than using an unrelated model’s package. |
