It can reduce the evidence a team must produce to qualify its development tools. It does not certify the customer’s firmware or complete product, and “IAR Embedded Workbench” support alone does not mean a toolchain is safety-certified.
What the certification covers
IAR says TÜV SÜD assessed its tool-development activities, issue-handling procedures, and testing and verification activities. For customers, IAR describes a package built around a specific certified, frozen tool version, a certificate report that states validity conditions, a safety guide, and a Functional Safety Support and Update Agreement.
A frozen version is maintained for bug fixes rather than new features. That can help a project control tool changes during a long product lifecycle, but teams still need to follow the certificate report and safety guide. The certification supports tool qualification; it is not an approval of the application, system design, or safety case.
Which architectures are marked as FuSa-certified?
IAR’s Embedded Workbench product page marks Arm, RISC-V, Renesas RL78, RH850, RX and STM8 as Functional Safety (FuSa)-certified. The vendor supports additional architectures, but support does not establish that a particular toolchain is certified for functional-safety use. IAR also identifies some legacy architectures as available by request only.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Architecture group | IAR’s displayed coverage | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Arm, RISC-V, Renesas RL78 | Broadest standards coverage in IAR’s architecture matrix | Confirm the exact architecture-and-standard combination in the applicable certificate report and safety guide. |
| Renesas RX, RH850, STM8 | Narrower standards coverage in IAR’s architecture matrix | Do not assume coverage for one standard or target implies coverage for another; check the matrix and certificate documents. |
| Other supported architectures | Not marked FuSa-certified on IAR’s product page | Confirm directly with IAR whether a certified edition and applicable documentation exist for the intended target. |
IAR lists IEC 61508, ISO 26262, EN 50128, EN 50657, IEC 62304, ISO 25119, ISO 13849, IEC 62061, IEC 61511 and IEC 60730 among standards addressed by its Functional Safety offering. This is a vendor-stated standards list, not evidence that every listed standard applies to every architecture or release. Match the target architecture and required standard together, then use the corresponding certificate report to establish the actual scope.
How to check whether an edition fits your project
- Identify the target. Record the processor architecture and the exact MCU or target family; do not rely on a general claim that Embedded Workbench supports it.
- Define the safety requirement. Identify the standard and required integrity classification for the project. Check whether the architecture matrix and certificate report cover that combination.
- Pin down the tool release. Verify the exact certified compiler and tool version, not just the product name. Certification and its conditions attach to specified versions.
- Review the certificate report and safety guide. Check validity conditions, covered tool functions, and any constraints the project must follow.
- Confirm support and maintenance terms. Check the Functional Safety Support and Update Agreement, including the availability and duration of qualified bug-fix updates needed for the product lifecycle.
IAR’s product-version pages attach safety documentation to individual releases, and access to some documents and downloads requires a valid Support and Update Agreement. The vendor’s pages retrieved for this article include a RH850 3.20.2 update published June 15, 2026, and Arm Functional Safety report and certificate materials published in 2026 for named older versions. These examples are not a claim that those are the latest releases across architectures. Verify the current release, part number, certificate and support status with IAR before selecting a toolchain.

What certification does—and does not—remove
A certified toolchain can reduce the work involved in qualifying development tools by providing vendor and third-party evidence for a particular version and defined conditions. It does not transfer responsibility for the product safety case to IAR or TÜV SÜD. The project team remains responsible for the system and application, including demonstrating that its tool use conforms to the applicable certificate conditions and safety guidance.
