The I2C HID Device entry in Windows 11 usually connects the operating system to an internal input device such as a touchpad, touchscreen, pen, or special-function button. When its driver is missing or failing, Device Manager may show a yellow warning icon, often with Code 10, Code 28, or Code 31.
There is no universal “I2C HID driver” that works on every PC. The correct package depends on the laptop or tablet manufacturer, model, chipset, Windows version, and sometimes the BIOS. Use Windows Update first, then install the matching driver from the computer manufacturer if Windows cannot repair it automatically.
Before downloading an I2C HID driver
Check what is actually broken. Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting Device Manager. Expand:
- Human Interface Devices
- Mice and other pointing devices
Look for I2C HID Device, a touchpad entry, or HID-compliant touch screen with a warning icon. The affected device does not always appear under the literal name “I2C HID Device.” Microsoft places touchpads in either of the two categories above, depending on the PC.

Double-click the suspected device and check the Device status box on the General tab. Record the error code before changing anything. The code helps distinguish a disabled device from a driver, firmware, or hardware problem.
Method 1: Install the driver through Windows Update
Windows Update is the safest first option because it can install drivers selected for your specific hardware.
Windows 11 steps
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Under Additional options, turn on Receive updates for other Microsoft products.
- Return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Open Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Select available driver updates and choose Download and install.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not explicitly request a restart.
Optional driver updates may not be available. Their absence does not necessarily mean the device has no driver; Windows may already have a suitable package or the manufacturer may distribute it separately.
Windows 10 steps
Although this guide targets Windows 11, the procedure is useful on Windows 10 systems:
- Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Advanced options.
- Under Update options, enable Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows.
- Return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- If shown, select View optional updates, choose the driver updates, and select Download and install.
Windows 10 reached the end of standard support on October 14, 2025. The operating system continues to run, but normal feature and security updates are no longer provided unless the device is covered by an applicable Extended Security Updates program.
Method 2: Update I2C HID from Device Manager
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices and, separately, Mice and other pointing devices.
- Right-click I2C HID Device or the affected touchpad, touchscreen, or HID entry.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
- If Windows does not find one, select Search for updated drivers on Windows Update when that option appears.
- Restart Windows after the installation completes.
Device Manager may report that the best driver is already installed even when a newer package exists on the manufacturer’s website. It is a useful repair method, but it does not guarantee that Windows has found the newest available driver.

Method 3: Download the driver from the PC manufacturer
Use this method when Windows Update does not fix the device, when the failure began after a major update, or when the manufacturer supplies a specific I2C, Serial IO, chipset, touchpad, or touchscreen package.
- Identify the exact computer model. Press Windows+R, type
msinfo32, and press Enter. Note the System Manufacturer and System Model. - Open the manufacturer’s official support site. Examples include Dell Support, Lenovo Support, HP Support, ASUS Support, Acer Support, and Microsoft Surface Support.
- Search for the exact model or enter its service tag or serial number.
- Choose Windows 11 64-bit if the site asks for an operating system.
- Check the categories named Chipset, Serial IO, Intel Serial IO, AMD chipset, Touchpad, Input, or Human Interface Devices.
- Download the package from the manufacturer, not from a third-party driver-download site.
- Run the downloaded installer and follow its prompts.
- Restart the PC and check Device Manager again.
On many Intel laptops, the I2C controller depends on the Intel Serial IO driver rather than a package named “I2C HID.” On AMD systems, the relevant package may be part of the AMD chipset driver. Install the package intended for the exact model rather than guessing based only on the device name.

If the manufacturer provides a ZIP archive or an installer that extracts files without installing them:
- Extract the download to a known folder such as
C:DriversI2C. - Open Device Manager and right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers.
- Select Browse… and choose the extracted driver folder.
- Leave Include subfolders enabled, then select Next.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
The package must match your Windows version and system architecture. Do not install a driver intended for a different model merely because the file name contains “I2C HID.”
Reinstall the device when the driver is stuck
A reinstall can repair a damaged device entry or force Windows Update to obtain the touchpad driver again.
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the affected I2C HID, touchpad, or touchscreen entry.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm with the Uninstall button.
- Restart using Start > Power > Restart.
After the restart, Windows attempts to detect the hardware and reinstall its driver. This documented procedure does not require selecting a separate option to delete the driver package. If the device does not return, open Device Manager and select Action > Scan for hardware changes.

Roll back a driver after a Windows update
If the touchpad or touchscreen stopped working immediately after a driver or Windows update, rollback is more appropriate than installing a random replacement.
- In Device Manager, right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver. Administrator permission may be required.
- Choose a reason, select Yes, and restart if Windows asks.
The rollback button may be unavailable if Windows has no previous driver version stored.
Enable a disabled touchscreen
For a touchscreen specifically, the user-facing entry is normally HID-compliant touch screen under Human Interface Devices.
- Open Start > Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices.
- Right-click HID-compliant touch screen.
- Select Enable device.
If several HID-compliant touch screen entries are listed, repeat the operation for each one. This procedure applies to the touchscreen entry; it is not a universal “enable” fix for every item named I2C HID Device.
Use PnPUtil to inspect or rescan the device
Advanced users can use the built-in pnputil utility from an elevated Command Prompt or Windows Terminal. These commands are useful when Device Manager’s interface is not enough.

pnputil /enum-drivers
To list connected devices with problems:
pnputil /enum-devices /connected /problem
To rescan for hardware changes:
pnputil /scan-devices
Newer Windows 11 releases also support device restart, enable, and disable commands, but they require the device’s instance ID. You can first inspect devices with:
pnputil /enum-devices /connected /deviceids /properties
Do not remove a driver package from the driver store simply because it is associated with an I2C device. The same package may support other hardware, and deleting the wrong package can create additional failures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat common Device Manager codes mean
| Code | Meaning | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The device is not configured correctly. | Update or reinstall the driver. |
| 10 | The device cannot start. | Check the OEM driver, chipset or Serial IO package, BIOS, and hardware connection. Code 10 alone does not prove that the driver is corrupted. |
| 12 | Windows cannot find enough free resources. | Restart, install BIOS updates, and check the manufacturer’s support guidance. |
| 14 | The device needs a restart. | Restart Windows. |
| 18 | The driver must be reinstalled. | Uninstall the device, then use Action > Scan for hardware changes or restart. |
| 22 | The device is disabled. | Right-click it and select Enable device. |
| 28 | No driver is installed. | Install the Windows Update or OEM driver. |
| 29 | Firmware did not provide required resources. | Check BIOS settings and the computer manufacturer’s BIOS documentation. |
| 31 or 37 | Windows cannot load or initialize the driver. | Reinstall the correct OEM driver. |
| 35 | System firmware lacks configuration information. | Check for a BIOS update from the manufacturer. |
| 41 | Windows loaded the driver but cannot find the hardware. | Restart, check firmware and connections, and seek hardware support if it persists. |
| 45 | The hardware is not connected. | Reconnect the device if external, or arrange service for an internal device. |
When driver installation does not solve the problem
Update the laptop’s BIOS or UEFI firmware only with the package supplied for the exact model, and keep the computer connected to power during the update. Also install relevant chipset and Serial IO packages before assuming the I2C HID entry itself is defective.
If the error returns after a clean OEM installation, the cause may be a failing touchpad or touchscreen, a loose internal cable, firmware resource allocation, or a motherboard issue. Code 10 is particularly nonspecific: it indicates that the device cannot start, not that one particular driver file is definitely damaged. A persistent Code 9, Code 29, Code 35, Code 41, or Code 45 is a strong reason to involve the manufacturer.
FAQ
Where can I download the I2C HID Device driver for Windows 11?
Download it from Windows Update or the official support page for the exact laptop, tablet, or motherboard model. The package may be labeled Intel Serial IO, AMD chipset, touchpad, touchscreen, or HID rather than I2C HID.
Is I2C HID Device the same as a touchscreen driver?
Not necessarily. I2C HID is a communication path used by several types of input hardware. A touchscreen normally appears as HID-compliant touch screen, while a touchpad may appear under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices.

How do I fix I2C HID Device Code 10?
Install the manufacturer’s chipset or Serial IO driver, update BIOS and Windows, then reinstall the affected device from Device Manager. Code 10 is a generic startup error and does not by itself prove that the driver is corrupt.
Can I use a generic I2C HID driver?
Avoid generic driver-download sites. Use Windows Update or the official computer manufacturer’s package. I2C devices often require model-specific chipset, Serial IO, firmware, or input drivers.
What if the I2C HID device is missing from Device Manager?
Check both Human Interface Devices and Mice and other pointing devices, then select Action > Scan for hardware changes. If it remains absent, install the model-specific chipset or Serial IO package and check BIOS or UEFI settings.
Will uninstalling I2C HID remove the driver permanently?
Microsoft’s normal repair procedure is to select Uninstall device and restart. Windows then attempts to detect the hardware and reinstall its driver. Do not manually delete driver-store packages unless you know exactly which package is safe to remove.
