A single server with 1 CPU and 2 GB of RAM reportedly handled more than 5,000 concurrent virtual users in one load test—but only after response caching moved to Nginx. That is a result for a particular API workload, not a promise that a $12 server can support 5,000 real-world users or a production application of any size.
What the test actually measured
In his account, Gaurav Talesara tested a database-backed feed and workflow API on one machine costing about $12 per month. The server ran Nginx, Node.js, and PostgreSQL together, with 1 CPU and 2 GB of RAM. There was no separate database server, Redis instance, or horizontally scaled application tier. A second virtual machine generated traffic so that the server under test did not also have to create the load.
The k6 virtual users repeatedly requested feed or workflow data, sometimes performed a write or action, and then requested data again. Talesara increased the load in steps and populated the database rather than testing against an empty one. His article does not specify the exact test script, duration, full request mix, or formal failure thresholds, so the description is an outline—not a benchmark another team can reproduce exactly. The server provider, plan, and region are also not identified. Read Talesara’s account on DEV Community.

The figures below are Talesara’s reported results for his workload; they have not been independently verified here. “Concurrent virtual users” describes simulated users active in the load test, not the number of registered accounts or a guaranteed number of people an application can serve.
#1 Best Overall
- Server 2022 Standard 16 Core
| Test stage | Reported result | Where a response cache was served |
|---|---|---|
| Initial test | At about 2,500 concurrent users: approximately 232 requests per second and 288 ms p95 latency. RAM stayed below 1 GB and CPU was around 90%; Talesara described PostgreSQL as behaving normally. | No cache optimization is specified for this baseline. |
| Application cache | Roughly 4,000 concurrent users. | A one-second cache in the Node.js application. Requests reaching the cache still pass through the application. |
| Nginx cache | More than 5,000 concurrent virtual users. | At a cache hit, Nginx can serve the response before it reaches Node.js. |
The account’s explanation is that CPU—not exhausted RAM or an evidently unhealthy database—was the immediate pressure point in the cited baseline. Reusing a response for one second reduced repeated work in the application; serving cached responses in Nginx reduced how often requests needed to reach Node.js. The server’s CPU and memory capacity did not change. The account does not provide a matching set of latency, throughput, and resource figures for every later stage, so the higher concurrency results should not be read as proof that latency or every other service metric stayed within a particular target.
Why 5,000 virtual users is not a capacity guarantee
Concurrent users are not interchangeable across applications. A virtual user’s impact depends on how often it sends requests, what those requests do, how large their payloads are, how much database work they trigger, whether they write data, and how traffic is distributed. Background jobs, connection behavior, and real users’ uneven activity also change the load. Five thousand virtual users following one test script therefore cannot be translated directly into five thousand people using another product.

Caching also changes the work being measured. A one-second response cache can be useful when the same response can safely be reused, but freshness and correctness depend on the application. Responses that change frequently or vary by user need careful cache rules; the reported test does not establish how those cases were handled or assess their trade-offs.

The practical lesson is not to avoid adding capacity. It is to measure the workload and locate the bottleneck before assuming that a larger server is the only fix. If you are evaluating your own API, use a workload that reflects its important read and write paths, watch latency and resource use as load rises, and change one meaningful factor at a time. The specific script and pass/fail criteria matter: without them, a headline concurrency number is difficult to compare with your service.

- Track response latency alongside throughput; a larger user count alone does not show whether the service remained responsive.
- Watch CPU, memory, and database behavior to determine which resource is constrained.
- Reduce avoidable repeated work where it is safe, then rerun the same workload to see what changed.
- Decide whether to optimize or add capacity based on your own workload and service targets, not this result alone.
A load test is not a production-readiness test. Talesara’s concurrency result does not demonstrate availability, backups, replication, monitoring, failover, security controls, disaster recovery, or rate limiting. Those are separate requirements to assess for the application and its risk.
