A failed response from a free or shared inference server does not automatically mean the model failed the task. Quota limits, capacity errors, authentication, timeouts, cold starts, and truncated output can all interrupt a run before the model’s task performance is meaningfully scored. Separate those service events from task outcomes, keep both in the log, and calculate task pass rate only from calls classified as scorable tasks.

Why a server failure can distort a model evaluation

A pass rate is only useful if its denominator contains attempts that actually tested the task. If a request is rejected for authentication or quota reasons, counting it as a model failure conflates service access with model capability. Conversely, silently dropping those calls hides operational problems that may affect whether the evaluation can run at all.

Jordan Liu frames the distinction this way: “A blocked run is data about the environment. It is not a vote on the model.” The proposed protocol is a preflight for interpreting runs, not an independently validated benchmark or a comparison of providers. Liu’s article reports no measured live-host or model results; its live hook is a sketch and its sample rows are synthetic. Read the original article.

Log each call before deciding what it means

Record one row for every call, including calls that do not produce a usable task result. At minimum, preserve the raw response details alongside the interpretation so a classifier can be reviewed or corrected later.

  • Latency for the call.
  • HTTP status, when available.
  • Whether the response parsed successfully.
  • Whether the task assertion passed.
  • A classified outcome kind.
  • Raw error text or other response details needed to understand the classification.

The proposed categories are task, quota, timeout, cold, capacity, truncation, and auth. Keep the raw evidence: keyword rules can be brittle, and a new error message may not fit the expected patterns.

Classify outcomes before calculating pass rate

The classification is intended to answer two different questions: did the call produce a scorable attempt at the task, and what service condition occurred? Treat only calls classified as task as eligible for the task pass-rate denominator. Keep all other calls visible as blocked environmental outcomes.

Kind Interpretation Task pass-rate treatment
task A call reached a scorable task result. Include the call; use its assertion result to determine pass or fail.
auth Authentication prevented the run; the example rule maps HTTP 401 or 403 here. Exclude from task denominator; report as blocked.
quota A quota response or quota-related message prevented the run; the example rule maps HTTP 429 or quota language here. Exclude from task denominator; report as blocked.
capacity A service-capacity error prevented the run; the example rule maps HTTP 500, 502, 503, or 504, or capacity language, here. Exclude from task denominator; report as blocked.
timeout A call exceeded the chosen timeout condition. Exclude from task denominator; report as blocked.
cold A call met the chosen cold-start or startup-latency condition. Exclude from task denominator; report as blocked.
truncation The response appeared incomplete or failed the selected truncation checks. Exclude from task denominator; report as blocked.

The HTTP mappings above are examples from Liu’s classifier, not universal meanings for every service. Its latency and parsing thresholds for timeout, cold, and truncation are proposed knobs, not measured boundaries or laws. Choose and document thresholds for the test you are running, and inspect the raw status and error details rather than trusting text matching alone.

Use small probes to expose likely confounds

The proposed preflight uses four probes, each aimed at a different failure mode. They are practical checks, not proof that a server will behave the same way during a larger or longer evaluation.

Assertion-based function task

Ask the model to produce a function and check it with an assertion. This creates a concrete pass/fail result when the response is usable and parseable.

Unified-diff task

Require the output to be a unified diff. This tests whether the response can be consumed in the format the evaluation expects, rather than treating any plausible prose as a successful answer.

Calculate task performance and report blocked calls separately

For scorable calls, calculate task pass rate as passing task calls divided by all task calls. Do not put blocked outcomes into that denominator. Report blocked counts and categories next to the task result so readers can see how much of the run was actually scorable.

Liu’s synthetic example contains four rows: two scorable task calls and two blocked calls. One of the two scorable calls passes, yielding a task pass rate of 0.5. That figure demonstrates denominator handling only; it is not a result from a live server. The article also proposes a publishability gate of at least four scorable rows and zero blocked rows. That is an author-selected protocol choice, not a general benchmark standard.

What this protocol can—and cannot—establish

These checks help distinguish task results from access, availability, and response-delivery problems in a particular run. They do not establish stable service quality, rank hosts, or prove model quality across conditions. A free or shared server result should not be presented as a controlled model comparison unless service conditions are controlled and the comparison’s scope is clear.

Synthetic rows can verify that a classifier follows its own rules, but they cannot establish live provider behavior.
